The London based Vertebra Theatre has delivered a number of performance and creative activities to open a cultural exchange on the collective trauma of Gender Based Violence and to create imaginative and inclusive spaces for and with communities of women and the queer people to share stories of collective empowerment. Our current project 'Electra Untitled' is currently supported by the Arts Council of England, Guildhall School of Music and Drama and other organisations and aims to raise awareness of Domestic Violence. Community Engagement: Our show Electra Untitled, along with accompanying community-focused workshops. This is a show inspired by the classical myth/Sophocles play ‘Electra’, which is looking to explore the story through the female gaze, seeking to tell a story about community empowerment. The workshops have been conducted so far in Jordan, Pakistan and the UK. Vertebra Theatre has a reputation for creating compelling, thought-provoking and entertaining theatre experiences in new and innovative ways. Our work tends to attract an audience who are not traditional theatre-goers. Using our distinctive physical style, puppetry and micro-cinema, we will strive to ensure that this production resonates with the new audiences our tour will attract. This financial year we have held a couple of workshops in order to: 1. To enrich, educate and entertain audiences, by providing an exceptional theatre experience; 2. To create participatory theatre, which involves audiences physically, emotionally and intellectually; 3. To create original material around the social issues and values that are relevant to the lives of people living in the UK. As well as developing and delivering high-quality theatre experiences, Vertebra worked extensively with the wider community, creating projects, workshops and productions. We partnered with other companies and organisations, providing them with our skills, expertise and experience, and supporting them in the development and delivery of their projects.
Vertebra Theatre has conducted a couple of co-production workshops with the communities we have been engaging in order to ensure that we reflect the needs and that we are relevant to the communities we are engaging with creatively.
