Supporting Carers in the Community In June 2023, we were awarded a grant from NHS North East London’s Social Prescribing Community Chest Pilot in Tower Hamlets. This funding was for services and activities linked to health inequalities and gaps in community provision and recognised that many things that affect people’s health and wellbeing can’t be treated by doctors or medicine alone, such as loneliness, stress, financial hardship and poor physical health. Our project focused on delivering coaching workshops and 1:1 coaching to unpaid carers in Tower Hamlets with a specific focus on wellbeing for male carers. Over the summer we worked with 7 carers who wanted coaching to help with a range of different topics. They all saw significant improvement in the areas they had worked on in coaching, including being able to ask for help, prioritising their health and wellbeing, feeling ok about focusing on themselves, feeling more motivated and trying new things. In March 2024 we ran a workshop exclusively for male carers on the topic of managing time to look after yourself better; of the 11 participants, 3 male carers subsequently took up the offer of 1:1 coaching. Participants said they felt better able to manage their time and find time for themselves and mentioned greater self-awareness, thinking about boundaries and interaction with other participants as being particularly helpful. Given that engaging male carers can be a difficult, we were very pleased with the take-up and hope that this has opened the way for the Carers Centre to set up its first male carers support group. We continued to work with individual carers who are able to self-fund and worked with 2 carers during this period. Supporting Carers at Work In July 2023 we were re-commissioned by Nottingham University’s Carers Network to deliver two further programmes of workshops and coaching to their members. We worked with 30 members of the University’s staff who are also unpaid carers. 60% of participants said they had achieved their goal and the other 40% that they had made good progress. Participants talked about being able to talk openly and think much more clearly, see things differently, feel more positive and encouraged that changes were possible. Others mentioned re-evaluating priorities, discovering new ideas and finding the motivation to take action and engage others to support them in making the changes they need. In September 2023, to mark Dementia Awareness Day, we delivered a workshop about Dementia Caring for Educating Matters, an organisation which offers guidance and support to companies and their employees on a range of subjects relating to creating diverse and inclusive cultures at work. We continued to work with online wellness platform Wellness Cloud to offer 1:1 coaching, bi-monthly peer support groups, talks, articles and workshops to support working carers and their managers. Supporting those who work with unpaid carers Between April and July 2024 we were commissioned to run a training programme for carer support staff from Action for Family Carers in Essex on using coaching approaches in their work. We trained 27 staff members who work with both adult and young carers. The feedback was that people feel better equipped to start using coaching approaches in their work, recognising that it may take some time for this new way of working to become properly embedded. Specifically, people talked about feeling more confident, better informed, and appreciating having some structure and new ideas for how to work with clients. Building on the success of our previous project with Carers Support West Sussex, the organisation was awarded National Lottery funding to develop their own in-house coaching capacity, they are now delivering 1:1 coaching to their service users and making coaching available to more carers in West Sussex and we are supporting them with training and ongoing supervision for their in-house coaches. Developing the organisation In July 2023 we received a ‘Scaling Up’ award from UnLtd, an organisation which works with partners from both the public and private sectors to deliver social impact by harnessing the huge potential of social entrepreneurs to solve society’s biggest challenges. The highly competitive award came with a year’s worth of funding as well as business support and mentoring to help us expand our reach and impact. This funding has allowed us to do significant work to grow and develop the company and raise awareness of our work. For example, we spoke at a national conference in Birmingham about the case for offering coaching to working carers. Working with University College London Community Research Initiative, and a volunteer PhD student researcher, we were able to bring together and analyse our 4+ years’ worth of evaluation data to help us demonstrate the impact of our work. We continued to be active members of the Coaching for Social Impact Network and contribute to growing and developing this community for those involved in coaching people for social good.
Our primary stakeholders are unpaid carers. Other important stakeholders include staff in organisations whose job involves supporting carers, employers of working carers, funders and commissioners of services to support unpaid carers. We continue to seek regular feedback from all workshop and coaching clients we have worked with during the year about their experience of working with us and ask about any changes they would like to see, additional support they might need, or topics for future workshops. Working in partnership with carers support organisations or employers of working carers we seek to develop a partnership where we co-design programmes together and share learning. Where we receive funding from commissioners, trusts or foundations, we always provide detailed progress and final reports setting out how the funding was used and the impact we have seen. We regularly post information about our activities on our website News page. This year we also started to send out a newsletter to our Carers Reference Group of former clients, together all our other stakeholders twice a year (New Year and in June during Carers Week). The newsletter allows us to keep people informed about our recent work and also to ask specific questions about the content of our work, the direction of the organisation and our priorities for the next period. The contributions received and our responses are summarised in the table below. A more detailed response is available on our website https://www.coachingforunpaidcarers.org.uk/post/what-we-were-up-to-in-2024 You told us you would be interested in us developing courses, programmes or resources focusing on a range of topics. Our plans for the coming year include opportunities to build these ideas into our forthcoming funding bids and programmes You suggested some enhancements to our workshop and coaching offer. Some of these suggestions are happening already and we will look into how we can introduce other suggested improvements You wanted us to make sure we are advertising our services as widely as possible so that more Carers can benefit. We are always on the look-out for opportunities to write or speak about or publicise our work.
