REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES |
for the Year Ended 30 June 2024 |
The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 June 2024. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019). |
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES |
Objectives and aims |
The purposes for which the Charity was established as a legal entity are: (1) The advancement of the Christian religion in Scotland and the world for the public benefit; (2) The promotion of education for the public benefit, in relation to the understanding of the Christian religion, the Biblical worldview and their influence for good on the flourishing of society; (3) Such other charitable purposes as are consistent with and further the attainment of the above objects. |
Significant activities |
Logos Scotland has continued its activity interacting with media, politicians and building its capacity to speak out on issues of concern in Scottish politics and society. |
The Board has continued to meet on a regular basis. The meetings have been a combination of focused in-person meetings involving the entire Board, some hybrid meetings and an annual 'away-day' in February 2024 involving most of the Board members for a period of more detailed discussion and strategic planning. From time to time additional subgroups of the Board (often with the Chief Executive) have been convened for specific purposes. |
ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE |
Charitable activities |
Given the modest size of the organisation the focus has been on a limited number of campaigns involving, research, publications (mainly on social media) and numerous interactions with Members of the Scottish Parliament. A particular emphasis for this year has been to engage in discussion and education with respect to the proposed Scottish legislation on "Assisted Dying." Working in partnership with 'Our Duty of Care' a group of doctors and other healthcare workers who aim to resist a change in the law on this issue. Logos Scotland has sponsored public educational events featuring medical specialists from jurisdictions where physician assisted suicide is already active - seeking to learn from that experience and advance a distinctly Christian worldview in accordance with our aims and objectives. To the end we sponsored events in Holyrood for MSP's and their staff throughout 2023 and 2024 building on the work that has been done in previous years.. |
A major survey was undertaken in early 2024 to assess the feelings of Christians and non Christians about faith in the public square. The results were covered exclusively in The Herald newspaper and then picked up by all the major newspapers in Scotland , including the front page of the Daily Telegraph in Scotland. |
We successfully ran our first conference, with around 100 people gathering in Stirling. Our speakers included MSPs, local councillors, theologians, media personalities and community workers, considering how we live our faith in the public square in Scotland today. |
We launched a new publishing website Mercat Cross that gives an opportunity to think more deeply about issues and have guest contributors writing and starting discussions on issues of concern. |
Our Chief Executive has been featured as a regular contributor on various current affairs radio and TV programmes. |

FUTURE PLANS |
Once again there are plans for the Board will meet in person for a two day period in February 2025 to allow strategic decision making to be developed. |
We will hold our second conference in May 2025 and aim to build on the success of last year, involving other organisations and attracting a larger audience. |
We will re-run our survey to begin to gather longitudinal data on how people of faith feel in Scotland about living, sharing and being involved in the public square. |
We are working on additional reports, webinars and articles focusing on issues of concern such as housing , poverty and human rights. |
We will continue to grow Mercat Cross as a publishing platform for ideas and longer pieces on issues of concern. |
We are not yet in a financial position to appoint some additional staff, however we are forging links with other academic institutions considering ways we can work together. We continue to work towards expanding our staff base. |

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF |
LOGOS SCOTLAND |
I report on the accounts for the year ended 30 June 2024 set out on pages five to twelve. |
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner |
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity's trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1)(a) to (c) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under Section 44(1)(c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. |
Basis of the independent examiner's report |
My examination was carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts. |
Independent examiner's statement |
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention : |
(1) | which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements |
- | to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations; and |
- | to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with Regulation 8 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations |
have not been met; or |
(2) | to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached. |
