Company activities and impact

Hoist Assisted Holidays has continued to work towards settings up a specialized accessible holiday accommodation for disabled people who have complex care needs so that they can have an inclusive break with family, friends and carers. HAH continued with its fundraising campaign. The involved organizing and running fundraising events, continuing with a GoFundMe campaign and using social media to help riase awareness and funding. Fundraising challenges such as skydiving and abseiling were organized as well as events such as coffee mornings, quizzes as well as floral and pottery workshops. Our Equality, Safeguarding, Risk Assessment and Fire Risk Policies along with a statement of Need were reviewed and a Community Founation grant applied for. Through public speaking at our fundraising events and regular posting on social media, HAH have been raising awareness of the difficulties and challenges faced by profoundly disabled people, their families and carers. We have also highlighted that they are excluded from having a few days away in Northern Ireland as there is no accessible holiday accommodation with hoists, profiling beds, pressure relieving mattresses, supportive shower/toilet chairs and changing benches that are required to meet their daily care needs. This is benefitting the community as it is paving the way for greater levels of accessibility and inclusivity for profoundly disabled people many of whom have life limiting or terminal illnesses. Through the fundraising events a sense of community has further developed. The events are often supported by disabled people and their families, and this is benefitting the community as by providing opportunity for those who have the most complex care needs, and who are often the most isolated in society to meet in a socially and enjoy an event and enjoy the company of other profoundly disabled people and their families who share similar challenges. Being service user led HAH provides opportunities for people who have complex health and care needs and their families to be involved in the fundraising and development of specialised accessible holiday accommodation. Hoist Assisted Holidays has been able to advise individuals with complex care needs, their families and some professionals involved in their care on suitable accessible holiday accommodation in Donegal, Dublin, places in England and in Tenerife that are equipped with hoists, profiling beds, supportive shower/toilet chairs and other specialised equipment. This has benefited the disabled community as we can give information that can enable disabled people who have complex needs and what to enjoy an inclusive holiday with family, friends and carers and opportunity to have a few days often for the first time.

Consultation with stakeholders

The Company’s stake holders are profoundly disabled people, many having life limiting or terminal illnesses, who have complex care needs, along with their families and carers. Our stakeholders also include those who support our fundraising campaign and those who attend our fundraising events. HAH has a growing network of profoundly disabled people and their families and has consulted with those attending fundraising events and with others through our social media and heard at first hand their personal experiences and difficulties they have regarding not being able to avail of regular accessible holiday accommodation as they do not have the specialised equipment to meet their day care needs. The following pieces of equipment were found to be essential to enable them to have an inclusive break Ceiling track hoist Mobile Hoist Electric profiling bed with cot sides Tilt and space supportive shower chair Changing benches Lowered level light switches Additional power sockets around the profiling bed for medical equipment Widened doorways and spacious rooms to accommodate large powered wheelchairs and room for equipment and carers to work. In response to the feedback HAH aims to scale up its fundraising campaign and to apply for further grants to enable a specialised accessible holiday lodge to be set up in NI to enable those with the most complex care needs to have an inclusive break. We have taken the feedback on board and whilst we are fundraising, we will advise on how families can hire out hoists and profiling beds and though extremely expensive, may enable some to have a break. We will also make our stakeholders aware of specialised accessible holiday accommodation in Dublin, Donegal, England as well as a purpose-built hotel in Tenerife for people with complex care needs and their families. Stakeholders have been invited through our social media to help with fundraising: By attending or organizing a fundraising event By taking up a fundraising challenge Joining a team to assist with organizing fundraising events
