Company activities and impact

In the financial year 2023 - 2024 the group have run a number of functions to raise funds for Newby Village Hall. These funds are used to help cover the maintenance and running costs of the Village Hall meaning it will be kept in good repair for future generations to use. We also sponsor activities in the hall, such as freecycling days, plant swops, a monthly book club and a monthly social evening. By sponsoring the hire fee of the hall, we can make all these events free of charge to the public. Each of the events appeals to the interests of different groups of people within the community and gives residents the chance to come together and get involved. The freecycling gives residents the chance to recycle unwanted goods while having a Tea and Coffee and chatting. Anything left is taken to a nominated charity shop, meaning nothing is wasted and this also lessens the impact of waste being sent to landfill. The plant swops are run alongside the freecycling and residents are encouraged to bring along seedlings or split plants to share with other residents, which encourages residents to be out in their gardens which in turn helps with mental health and overall wellbeing. Our social evenings give residents the opportunity to relax and socialise within the village as we do not have a community centre or public house. The village also has no public transport. The nearest facilities are approximately 4 miles away with no direct footpaths, meaning residents are reliant on a car to access these. We provide free Tea, Coffee and a pooled supper, with residents able to bring their own drinks if wanted. The social evening not only cuts down on car travel but also provides a free and safe space for residents to come together and reduce social isolation. Our sponsorship of the hall also means that Newby Book Club can use the hall free of charge for their monthly meetings to discuss the book of the month and other topics of literature. The books are sourced from our local library which provides multiples of books for clubs, or books are purchased through used book sites. This reduces the cost of purchasing books and keeps the clubs outlay to a minimum. As well as our own fund raising for the Village Hall we also offer to provide refreshment facilities and help to other charitable fundraising groups who use the Village Hall.
