COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

MANCHESTER URBAN DIGGERS C.I.C.

Company Number: 12014832 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 May 2024

Company activities and impact

Manchester Urban Diggers CIC (MUD) are a social enterprise, working to create a fairer, more sustainable food system in Greater Manchester, and develop a replicable model for regenerative, localised, community-focused farming. We focus on the role of regenerative urban agriculture, and a holistic conception of food sovereignty within urban communities, as a necessary part of building an alternative, sustainable food system. Since we formed in 2019, we’ve worked on 30+ grassroots, people-led food growing projects. At present we run three community market gardens around Manchester: Platt Fields Market Garden, in Fallowfield; Forever Fields in Whalley Range, in partnership with St Margaret’s Community Centre; Beswick Urban Growers, in partnership with The East Manchester Academy. All our spaces and activities are co-designed by the community, through the work of volunteers and programmes participants, often with otherwise limited access to green space. Our gardens are hubs for thriving, connected communities, havens for nature, and visions of a fair and sustainable alternative way to supply the food we need. These are built on previously disused green spaces, and are developing models of small-scale urban food growing, ecological regeneration, and inclusive, community-focused green space. As well as working with our community of volunteers to grow food, we deliver: wellbeing, Social and Therapeutic Horticulture, & community cohesion programmes, catered using food grown on-site, often targeting marginalised groups in our communities: e.g. refugees and asylum seekers, LGBTQ+, people experiencing mental health problems and social isolation; weekly open volunteer gardening clubs; food growing workshops; horticultural training programmes, with e.g. people excluded from the horticultural sector, probation service workers, disadvantaged young people; large community events, focused around food, nature and seasonality. In 2024 we logged 13000 volunteering hours, provided 3000 free or subsidised meals from food grown on-site; we grow around 2 tonnes of food per year. In this financial year specifically; - we fundraised through a crowdfunder to continue our asylum seeker/refugee programme and improve the facilities as Platt Fields Market Garden. - we received a grant to begin a new garden in Whalley Range which we have called Forever Fields.

Consultation with stakeholders

We held our yearly AGM with community members, volunteers and partner organisations. Feedback from stakeholders requested longer opening hours, a cafe offer, increased programmes for local asylum seekers and refugees which we have all carried out and implemented. We are part of a partnership governance board with Manchester City Council to regularly discuss the development of our Platt Fields Market Garden site. We talk regularly to the Platt Field Park team to update them on any major works we plan to carry out and any events we plan to host. We also talk regularly to other Manchester City Council staff such as the Parks Programming manager. We have talked to local councillors & updated them on our projects. We frequently consult the Friends of Platt Field Park group to update them on our progress over the past year, attend AGMs and regularly partner with them and other park partners such as Platt Hall and Incredible Edible.

For this financial year, directors remuneration for 3 executive directors was 68640 equating to 22880 per annum for full time hours. There was no other remuneration received.
