Empower Careers CIC (Empower Careers) is a community interest company created to benefit underrepresented secondary school students aged 15-16 in schools situated in smaller cities and towns. The community interest model means that any assets of the company, including any cash put into the company, are locked into the company and that there are restrictions for how it can be used, such as only being used for the benefit of the stakeholder group cited above. During the financial year 2023-2024, the foundation behind Empower Careers began development in several ways. Firstly, we received a grant of £1,000 from the University of Nottingham to use towards developing Empower Careers, which has been used to help with making a website and developing our branding. Empower Careers was represented on a programme by the University of Southampton to develop Empower Careers, including through participation on a public panel event; and we began development of a podcast and white paper to release to the public.. Due to a difficulty in entering the employability market for our chosen demographic, we conducted the above activities as an alternative means to interact with key stakeholders, and are looking at ways to benefit the community using digital means. Due to the small team behind Empower Careers, we are aiming to expand the team in the future to enable a more efficient way of working towards and achieving our goals of benefitting the community.
Key stakeholders for Empower Careers include young people, their parents and teachers within the careers and employability space. We reached out to members in the community, including teachers at several schools in the Solent region and members of the University of Southampton who work with such schools, in order to determine the local needs when it comes to employability for 15-16 year olds. We have not heard back from a majority of those we reached out to, but our limited research has led to an identification that there is a lack of resources available for schools to properly provide employability workshops and other such useful tools themselves. In terms of a further consultation to enable us to determine what we can offer in terms of at Empower Careers, we are hoping to continually engage with members of the community to find alternative ways we can provide support in an accessible manner. We have faced a difficulty in entering the employability space due to the nature of the stakeholders being young adults, the fact we are a new company and due to our limited resources. As a result, we are looking into alternative ways to engage with the community that also upholds Empower Career’s goals of providing employability benefits to the individuals identified in Part 1.
