Quaggy Community Choir was founded in 2017 to improve the musical literacy and skills, as well as the health and wellbeing of local people through active participation in communal singing. Our founding principles and core aims remain central to our activities. Over the past financial year, we have welcomed a number of new singers to our choir from a variety of backgrounds, cultures and nationalities. We were proud to support two of our singers through pregnancy and welcomed both their newborn babies to the choir, ensuring the sessions was welcoming and comfortable to enable the new mothers to feed and change their babies. Continuing to sing with the choir provided routine, support and all the positive benefits of singing during the challenges of the perinatal period. In April 2024, we sadly lost a well loved singer. This was the first loss for our choir. A small group of singers attended and sung at the funeral and were very proud to do this. We took the decision to increase our suggested rates and thanks to the continued generosity of our singers, contributions have remained stable despite the ongoing effects of the ongoing Cost of Living crises which has hit people hard in our region of South East London. In November 2023, we were approved to join the Lewisham Community Lottery. Lewisham Community Lottery is a weekly lottery that raises money for good causes in Lewisham. 60% of ticket sales go to good causes - 50% to us and 10% to a central fund. Funds are sent directly to the choir every month and this has provided the choir with a small regular income. We have been proud to take part in a number of events, many of which supported local good causes. Our events programme has been broader, offering singers a wider range of performance opportunities. In December 2023, we took part in Sing Out for Christmas - a collaboration with our friends in the Lewisham Sing Out Choirs. This concert was in aid Mottingham Foodbank. We also took part in Lewisham Winter Market - a paid event which brought in some income for the choir - and ended the year with a busk at London Charing Cross Underground Station as part of Choirs for Change, an initiative raising funds from Health Poverty Action. This final event of the year was in collaboration with KT6 Vocal Group. On Make Music Day 2024 (21st June), we busked at London Waterloo Station in collaboration with KT6 Vocal Group. The busk was in aid of St Christopher’s Hospice and we raised £225.53 for the hospice in total. On 7th July 2024, we took part in a free wine and cheese concert at St. Mary the Virgin, Lewisham, a local church at the heart of the community. This was a collaboration with the Lewisham Sing Out Choirs, with funds raised going towards the restoration of the church - a site of local historic interest.
We carried out a survey in December 2023 which requested feedback on the past year. We received 25 responses. 96% rated the quality of Jake’s sessions as very high with the remaining 4% rating the sessions highly. We received some fantastic feedback on how singing had impacted singers’ mental health: “Being part of the choir has improved my wellbeing as I love being with people and like making new friends. I get a sense of achievement from mastering the songs, and doing that with others.” “I love being part of the choir and regularly tell my friends that joining has been my best decision I've made this year. It has a positive impact on my mental health and I always come away from rehearsals feeling better, no matter how I enter. It's fun, gives me a sense of community, and adds routine to my week. I always look forward to it.”
The total amount paid or receivable by directors in respect of qualifying services was £4800. There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director’s loss of office, which require to be disclosed.
