The Last Baguette theatre company CIC creates touring shows and theatre workshops for young people and regularly leads large-scale youth and community projects. We make entertaining, accessible and eccentric work for young people and families. In 2023-24, with the support of Arts Council England and in partnership with Pound Arts, we created a new touring production for ages 2-6 and families called A Winter’s Tail, which toured for 31 performances in Wiltshire & the Southwest. Alongside this we led a theatre participation programme for young people in Wiltshire & surrounding counties in partnership with local arts organisations & charities. This included 77 Playtime sessions for early years participants & their grownups, & 16 theatre workshops for young people. We worked with 2993 participants during the project, & performed to a total of 1410 audience members. We led several youth theatre workshops throughout the year with groups including Malmesbury Scouts and St Joseph’sPrimary School. In partnership with Malmesbury Carnival, we led a series of workshops in August/September 2023 to create mobile sculptures and costumes for Malmesbury Carnival procession. The workshop involved over 120 participants and the performance was seen by an audience of over 2000 people. We worked with 15 young people in a series of theatre workshop in Malmesbury to create a devised performance, supported by Malmesbury Local Youth Network. Devised theatre is a tool through which young people can express their thoughts & views, & discuss current events & values. It develops confidence, creative skills & collaboration & can be an emotional outlet to talk about issues in a safe space. It was exciting, hard & rewarding project & we are to proud to have offered high quality participation work locally & to tour exciting early years work in rural communities.
Our stakeholders are the young people who participate in our workshops, the artists who create and perform our shows and workshops, and the organisations who we work in partnership with. We ask young people and their parents for feedback after performances and workshops, and recent quotes from participants include: “Thankyou so so much Last Baguette for your wonderful performance of A Winter's Tail in the library this morning. It was a magical, heart warming & utterly delightful show in every way” "Soo much fun for the Wildflowers to watch & be a part of a superb play-along theatre adventure of 'A Winter's Tail' by @thelastbaguette this morning!” “What a wonderful interactive, inclusive, entertaining & enjoyable experience - thank you!” We hold feedback meetings with all of the artists involved in our projects, and also regularly meet with and consult the organisations we work with to receive feedback – for example with Pound Arts, Wiltshire Libraries and Malmesbury Local Youth network. In response to this feedback, we plan to continue to tour Playtime, as well as developing a new outdoor children’s touring show next year. We also aim to create a bigger performance involving more young people in an outdoor public performance as part of Malmesbury Carnival next year. In response to Arts Council England’s new Let’s Create strategy, we will continue to collect data on our environmental impact and develop our sustainability strategy. We will also continue to make our work more accessible, through disability awareness training and by integrating more Makaton into our Playtime sessions.
