COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

SOUND, MIND AND UNITY CIC

Company Number: 15377326 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 December 2024

Company activities and impact

In 2024 the company’s main activity was promoting access to community art, specifically music and singing connected with karaoke. The company operated in Birmingham and its Service Users reflected the wide diversity of the City’s population. The company’s activities are open to everyone, but they are targeted on vulnerable people and their friends and families. This means that the company has a strong community cohesion mission as well as an artistic one. During 2024 the company concentrated its resource on developing Karaoke as both an artistic activity and as a way of encouraging community cohesion and public (mental) health. For example, members of the public who are suffering from mental health problems are encouraged to attend Sound Mind and Unity’s Karaoke events as a way of improving their self-confidence and communication skills. Other participants who live alone are also encouraged to take part as a way of reducing the isolation and loneliness that otherwise reduce their quality of life. The company invites people to bring a friend, neighbour, relative or caregiver to its karaoke events. These took place regularly through the year at suitably equipped venues located in various parts of Birmingham. This spread of activity is designed to encourage participation by people who live in different parts of the city. The company’s plans for 2025 include expanding the ways in which its events are accessible by social media for the benefit of housebound Service Users and those who live in other parts of the country. The directors consider this is important because the company’s karaoke-based approach to supporting people’s mental health and morale is currently unique in Britain to Sound, Mind and Unity CIC. The company therefore has a huge potential market to develop. The company’s activities have been financed by the directors and from small charges made for entry to its events. An evening of Karaoke includes a 3 course meal with different levels of charges for participants and their companions. The company only seeks to recover its costs and is therefore able to provide a high-quality evening’s entertainment and dinner economically. For example, £20 for adults (13+) and £10 for children (6 to 12). Sound Mind and Unity seeks to improve the artistic content of its evenings by providing opportunities for participants to practice Karaoke singing privately before they perform in front of an audience. Experienced karaoke performers are on hand to provide advice and encouragement. Our plans include engaging with semi-professional singers to enrich the artistic content of the community events that the company delivers. As the number of people attending the company’s karaoke evenings steadily grows the pressure on our finances also increases. There will be no attempt to increase admission prices. This would be counterproductive to the company’s mission of promoting open access for people with limited resources. Particularly because they have mental health problems or other psychological issues that mean they are living on Social Security benefits. In this circumstance, the company hopes to use its status as a CIC to apply for grants to help meet its operating costs. These will be from organisations that share Sound Mind and Unity CIC’s ambitions for community development and artistic progress through karaoke.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company considers that its stakeholders include the people who currently attend its events, the managements of the venues where the karaoke evenings take place and the volunteers who assist the Directors to organise and publicise the events. The company consults by collecting feedback at the events from participants and by devoting time at staff meetings to discussing how the company’s services can be improved. We place equal importance on identifying aspects of the evening that could be improved and on learning from our mistakes. The Directors intend to widen their consultation with stakeholders to include Mental Health Care professionals and Social Workers. In addition, they would like to consult with the friends, relatives and neighbours of Service Users to understand how they are benefiting from karaoke or how they can be successfully introduced to it. Sound Mind and Unity CIC thinks that the use of social media is the best way of achieving the required levels of consultation.
