Company activities and impact

Halfpace Theatre serves migrant and marginalised communities in London and wider SE England through theatre performances, career and skills development, and job opportunities. During the financial year June 2023-June 2024 we have: Created the show 'Transit' which represented migrant stories on stage, employed 15 migrant creatives, and provided free tickets to 21 refugees. This performance received an OffComm award for excellence in short run theatre and the Mayor of Southwark attended. We had almost 100 migrants attend across the short run, many of whom were moved to tears and wrote that the show effectively captured their immigration experiences. Mentored 25 individual artists. Taught self-producing workshops to 20 early-career artists. Taught 9 devising workshops & upskilled over 100 artists. Put on two migrant Q&A panels (60 migrants in attendance across both) which offered practical advice for new migrant artists. Produced a migrant scratch night with Ensemble Not Found that developed 6 new pieces of experimental theatre & engaged over 55 audience members in a single night (most were migrants/Asian diaspora) Produced 2 community celebration nights that created connections among migrants & brought them closer to our work (around 70 migrants in total) Advocated for migrant & marginalised communities in the UK, promoting their representation on and off stage

Consultation with stakeholders

Halfpace's stakeholders are our community members, our community partners our Ensemble and our audiences. We sent surveys to all of our audience members after Transit and the migrant scratch night asking for feedback on the show. We also invited reviewers to comment on the quality of the show, and ended up winning an award from the good reviews. We met with all of our community partners to discuss how we can serve our joint communities better. We sent out electronic and paper surveys to all of the community members who attended our workshops to ask what worked well for them, what they learned and what we can do better in the future. We also make it a point to speak with migrants at various events and at our own, asking them: What do you need to succeed? What would make your life and your career easier? From their answers we developed the 'Making It Work' project with Ensemble Not Found, which directly responds to the needs of migrant artists and communities. After our 2022 version we learned we can expand the accessibility of the programme & offer better resources to migrants, and so put this into practice for the 2023 and 2024 versions. We also created a resource archive as many migrants reported not knowing where to turn to for information, and it has proved infinitely useful as we now have practical, clear resources to offer as a follow up to workshops and 1:1 advice sessions.
