Company activities and impact

Seemia Theatre CIC was established so their activities provide benefit to: Marginalised communities, in particular, (but not limited to); - Migrant, Iranian & Persian diaspora, LatinX diaspora, and other Global Majority communities - Young people - Artists who are underrepresented in the sector and/or in the early stages of their career In our business year 2023-2024, Seemia Theatre facilitated 1 Two Week Research & Development of a New Multimedia Theatre Production ‘Everything That’s The Case’ which is still in development, supported by Barbican Centre, Norwich Theatre, Arcola Theatre and Arts Council England. We employed 17 artists, engaged 7 volunteers, provided a paid training opportunity for 1 young black actor, and a live audience of 40. They mentored artists at International Theaterinstitut (ITI) Academy, Germany, and two of Seemia’s artists were invited to take part in the ITI Conference as part of Theater der Welt Festival in Frankfurt. They continued mentoring artists and preparing applications in collaboration with ITI for activity in 2024-2025. Dedicated support to four artists, with wider overall reach of over 80 artists. They became Oxford Playhouse EVOLVE Associate Artists and began being mentored Oxford Playhouse staff. This supported Seemia’s Director’s develop key skills and networking opportunities. They facilitated several workshops for Norwich Theatre and Norwich University of the Arts. This supported both Norwich Theatre associate artists and NUA’s student’s exploration of ensemble & devised theatre. Overall reach of 40 workshop participants.

Consultation with stakeholders

As the three company directors are also employed freelance by Seemia Theatre CIC, they meet at least a minimum of once per month, increased to a minimum of once a week during project basis. There has been no formal consultation. In February - March 2023, prior to formally incorporating as a CIC, the company directors established a Business Plan, which is regularly updated to reflect the fast paced nature of the creative industries and the opportunities that are available Agreed was to apply for the following commissioning opportunities, funding streams and artistic collaborations: British Council Four Nations funding Norwich University of the Arts Research Associate Company ARC Stockton Make New Work Commission 2023 (Red Light) ARC Stockton Make New Work Commission 2023 (No Singing Allowed) Brixtonhouse Housemates Festival & Commission Cultural Bridge International Funding New Diorama Interventions Research Commission Directing for Undergraduate Acting &/or Performance degrees at various HE institutions To apply for associate artist and residency applications at multiple venues and organisations for ‘Everything That’s The Case’ and the solo-shows in development. In project evaluations for ‘Everything That’s The Case’ artists we had worked with from Migrant, Iranian and Latinx Diasporas were interested in pursuing funding and development opportunities for the production, in particular international opportunities. Specific to our working/business practices, artists also proposed development for future rehearsals/residencies to work with movement & intimacy coordinators, and explore further access support, tools and best practices for neurodivergent artists employed by the company. Our artist community were also keen to begin developing both solo-shows and two-hander performances (with two performers). Following this feedback, we continued to support two Iranian artists develop two new theatre productions, ‘Saria Callas’ with support from Camden People’s Theatre and ‘Unattended Objects’ with support from Camden People’s Theatre and artsdepot. Continued discussions with artists encouraged Seemia to begin a working relationship with artsdepot, where they applied for several residency opportunities and organised workshops for Iranian and migrant diaspora in 2025. Feedback from workshop participants with Norwich Theatre were keen to see us work further with Norwich’s migrant community, specifically Norwich Theatre’s Being Migrant community group, due to take place in 2025.
