For the reporting period, from 19th March 2023 to 30th June 2024, Justice Support International CIC (“the Company” from herein) provided services to individuals at risk due to persecution or conflict to reach. During this reporting period, the company focused on the following key activities to facilitate safe and legal passage as stated in its objectives: - Activity 1: Financial support was provided to individuals at risk for basic supplies to sustain them until they reach safety, namely costs for accommodation, food and medical supplies; and - Activity 2: Financial support was provided to individuals at risk for travel costs to enable them to travel to safety. This included purchasing temporary visas to neighbouring countries where they could seek international protection in another country, as well as flights to the neighbouring third country or country of final destination. During this reporting period, all individuals provided with support were of Afghan nationality and were being persecuted for their prior employment as a democratic actor, including as human rights defenders or legal professionals. Requests for support were received via partner organisations and all requests were found to be credible following vetting and due diligence conducted. A total of 3 families have been supported by the Company during this reporting period. 1 of those families (7 people) has successfully reached their country of final destination and safety. The other families are preparing to flee or in transit prior to reaching their country of final destination, subject to external visa procedures. In summary, during this reporting period, the Company provided funding to 3 families at risk for basic supplies and/or travel costs to reach safety. 1 of those families has successfully reached their final safe destination and 2 families continue to seek safety with financial support from the Company.
During the reporting period, the Company held numerous consultations with relevant stakeholders. Notably, consultations were held with - - Representatives from the community of individuals at risk: Consultations were held online and in-person, in separate meetings, to improve knowledge of the situation for individuals fleeing specific countries, to identify those most at risk and how to best support them. As a result of these consultations, more stringent vetting procedures were introduced in cooperation with partner organisations. - Partner organisations engaged in protection work, namely NGOs, lawyers and international organsiations, were consulted regularly, on a monthly basis, to ensure that information shared with the Company was up-to-date. This enabled the Company to identify individuals in need of support and react appropriately in relation to new situations on the ground in the country being fled or with regards to procedural changes to legal pathways. - Experts in security and risk management services were consulted for advice about travel procedures. This included an in-person meeting to improve and ensure financial support was provided for the safest possible passage to those fleeing within budgetary constraints. - Donors were consulted on a quarterly basis to discuss the situation in countries from which individuals are fleeing, individual cases, legal pathways pursued and matters relevant to costs. This included online meetings and secured funding for individual families requested on a case-by-case basis. Key results from stakeholder consultations: - Individuals at risk identified; - Improved vetting procedures; - Increased communication on country situations; - Improved security assessments; and - Funding received.
