Directors' Report
The directors present their report and accounts for the year ended 30 November 2024.
Principal activities
The trustees have monitored the activities undertaken by the SMHC from December 2023 to November 2024 and agree that they meet the charitable aims of educating the public. Our principal activity has been the provision of exhibitions to the public and historical information presented via our website. Volunteers from the community were involved in all aspects of our work, helping them gain new skills and confidence, building friendships and overcoming social isolation.

We work in partnership Children’s University Network, North Yorkshire Council, Scarborough Heritage Forum, Scarborough Archaeological & Historical Society, Scarborough Library, Scarborough Civic Society and Scarborough Museums Trust, Discover Yorkshire Coast tourism agency, local schools & colleges.

Members of the public continue to donate valuable memorabilia that our volunteers catalogue, digitise and display. Volunteers help answer family and local history enquiries from residents and globally via the Internet.

Our trustees keep our charity policies and risk assessment up-to-date including: data protection guidelines; whistleblowing; complaints; volunteers; safeguarding; and financial reserves (all on our website). We have publice liability insurance, building insurance and Local Authority Landlord's Certification.
Main activities

From December 2023 to November 2024 we received nearly 4,500 visitors to the centre. Every month, 4,000 people view our website and our facebook page.

In December 2023, we put on a special exhibition about scarborough's boxing day traditions in conjunction with an art show held at the old boatyard on Sandside. Many Christmas visitors to the town saw this along with our maritime themed special festive window display.

From March to June our exhibition was about 'Women at Sea' and was created in partnership with the Lloyds Register Foundation.

From July to September our exhibition focussed on the history of the British seaside experiance.

From September to November our exhibition looked at the eccentric Sitwell family who had a summer home in Scarborough.

During the year we recruited some new volunteers in partnership with the National Lottery Heritage funded project called 'What the Sea Saw'. The project was run by Digital Drama and they transcribed all our old oral history recordings to create a QR code audio trail in the Old Town recounting the lives of fishermen and their families.

Another partnership project was with the Old Parcel's Office art gallary and we helped them create an exhibition for National Heritage Open Days looking at the history of fishing in Scarborough.

For Scarborough's annual summer maritime festival, Seafest, we had a wide ranging display of our previous exhibitions covering some twenty topics. Over 10,000 viditors attended the weekend event.

For Scarborough's Armed Forces Day in June, several volunteers sold books on the seafront about Scarborough in World War One and Two.

We still get plenty of visitors to our 'History Box', an old BT red telephone box by the harbour, displaying history information and an audio guide.
Our Sea Wall Heritage Trail, with 29 information 'portholes' around the Marine Drive continues to be much appreciated and visited. SMHC trustee, Huw Roberts, continued to interview local residents about their memories of old Scarborough.

In partnership with a local seafront business we helped them put a display on about a WW1 deck gun along with apop up display about Scarborough in WW2.

In partnership with 'Forge Photography and Film Production Limited' we helped them to create a new documentary about the 1914 Bombardment of Scarborough.

Our volunteers continued to catalogue and digitise the huge collection of maritime photographs donated to us by Mr Scales and Mr Coull.
Funding
Our largest annual expenses has been £4,000 to install double glazing in the flat above that we rent out along with £2,500 for painting and scaffolding of the window frames. Our next largest expenses was £981 for the rental of an off-site overflow storeroom for our larger archived items. Donations from the public continue to support our work along with the rental income from our tenants.
Conclusion
It has been another busy year with more partnership working than ever before. We would like to thank everyone who has supported the SMHC this year, especially our volunteers who gave up their valuable time to make it all possible.

Notes to the Accounts
for the year ended 30 November 2024
1 Accounting policies
Basis of preparation
The accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with FRS 102, The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (as applied to small entities by section 1A of the standard).
Turnover
All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
Tangible fixed assets
Tangible fixed assets are measured at cost less accumulative depreciation and any accumulative impairment losses. Depreciation is provided on all tangible fixed assets, other than freehold land, at rates calculated to write off the cost, less estimated residual value, of each asset evenly over its expected useful life, as follows:
Plant and machinery over 3 years
Stocks
Stocks are measured at the lower of cost and estimated selling price less costs to complete and sell. Cost is determined using the first in first out method. The carrying amount of stock sold is recognised as an expense in the period in which the related revenue is recognised.
Debtors
Short term debtors are measured at transaction price (which is usually the invoice price), less any impairment losses for bad and doubtful debts. Loans and other financial assets are initially recognised at transaction price including any transaction costs and subsequently measured at amortised cost determined using the effective interest method, less any impairment losses for bad and doubtful debts.
Creditors
Short term creditors are measured at transaction price (which is usually the invoice price). Loans and other financial liabilities are initially recognised at transaction price net of any transaction costs and subsequently measured at amortised cost determined using the effective interest method.
Taxation
All income and gains are exempt from corporation tax and have been, or will be, applied for charitable or qualifing purposes.
Provisions
Provisions (ie liabilities of uncertain timing or amount) are recognised when there is an obligation at the reporting date as a result of a past event, it is probable that economic benefit will be transferred to settle the obligation and the amount of the obligation can be estimated reliably.
