Company activities and impact

After a period of post-Covid dormancy, In The Drink UK CIC relaunched its activities in September 2023, supported by a charitable donation. Between September 2023 and March 2024, we conducted qualitative, quantitative, and observational research, surveying 250 pubs and bars along or near the River Thames, from Thames Ditton to Gravesend. This research provided an authentic picture of industry practices, revealing that 69% of venues surveyed still rely on single-use plastic cups. Alongside on-the-ground research, we conducted secondary analysis of international best practices, examining successful regulations and reusable cup systems, such as Belgium’s single-use cup ban and deposit-based reuse networks that have reduced waste and shifted consumer behaviour at scale. This research laid the foundation for our case studies and government report, proposing legislative measures to phase out single-use plastic cups in UK pubs and bars. By providing data-driven insights and advocating for sustainable change, our work will support long-term environmental and community benefits, encouraging bars, venues, and events to transition from disposable plastics to reusable alternatives.

Consultation with stakeholders

In The Drink UK CIC’s stakeholders include our charitable donor, Eventim Apollo, and the 250 pubs and bars surveyed along or near the River Thames. Throughout the 2023-2024 financial year, we kept Eventim Apollo informed of our progress, ensuring transparency and alignment with our mission. Our direct consultations with pubs and bars provided valuable industry insights into the use of both single-use and reusable plastic cups. In response, we have continued our research and development of practical reusable cup solutions, aiming to create scalable systems that benefit hospitality businesses, customers, and the environment alike. In The Drink UK CIC is also a contributing partner to the Clean Thames Plan by the Port of London Authority, whose 2050 Vision is of a clean river, free of sewage, waste, and other pollution, supporting greater biodiversity and recreational use. Our work aligns with this vision, reinforcing the need for sustainable solutions to reduce plastic waste and protect the Thames for future generations.
