Bristol Family School CIC is a group of 3 mental health professionals and an educationalist in June 2019. The CiC’s work is around supporting mental health and well being in schools. There is a lot of potential within this new government focus, resources notwithstanding. In particular, the opportunities for prevention of the development of serious difficulties, as well as closing the gap for children who are not meeting their potential. The company was set to begin introducing an intervention called ‘Multi Family Groups’ in January 2020 but this was halted by the pandemic lockdowns in 2020. Now that schools have re-opened the CiC is picking up where it left off, and is trading services and raising funds to provide services to schools supporting them to set up policies and introduce interventions which benefit the whole school community, and in particular vulnerable children at risk of exclusion alongside their families. The ‘Multi Family Groups’ intervention aims to improve emotional, mental health and academic outcomes for children and young people presenting with complex problems, such as disruptive behaviour, hyperactivity, poor impulse control, erratic school attendance, anxiety or depression. Groups are set up to begin in 2 and hopefully 3 schools in January 2022. Dr Juliet Holder is also contracted via the Bristol Family School CiC by The Enable Trust as a consultant advising on policy change around mental health. Which will be benefiting the whole school communities including 255 pupils and around 200 + staff. The CiC will be monitoring its work and impact and looks forward to reporting on this once there is sufficient data - ie will be providing a ‘social audit report’. The Bristol Family School is looking to replicate the work of the London Family School, which has been judged outstanding and demonstrates significant impact for its beneficiaries in terms of improved mental health and wellbeing.
The company’s stakeholders are the clinicians working for the company, the children and staff of schools working with BFS clinicians. At the beginning of our journey, stakeholder consultation is in infancy with discussions around how to best set up and work in the schools come January. BFS CiC will be putting in place monitoring and evaluation systems including stakeholder consultation as the work establishes and progresses. Dr Juliet Holder works with the CEO of the Enable Trust in consultation with school staff around setting up mental health policy in the schools.
