COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

Year Ending: 30 June 2024

Company activities and impact

In 2023–2024, SwopItUp’s primary focus was on maintaining the infrastructure and resources that enable community-led clothing swaps. Although proactive delivery was paused for much of the year, we continued to provide guidance and marketing materials to schools interested in running their own events. Our website remains a valuable source of information for those looking to organise swaps, and has been kept live to allow us to scale up activity again when the opportunity arises. In early 2024, we supported and ran a successful clothing swap at the University of Portsmouth, aimed at young adults aged 18–28. Around 100 participants engaged with the event, which not only extended the reach of SwopItUp’s impact but also helped raise awareness of circular fashion models within this demographic. The event provided a replicable framework for future swaps tailored to university settings. Although the SwopItUp Creators Programme was not delivered during this period, its legacy continues through the achievements of past participants. Many young people who volunteered through their Duke of Edinburgh Award have gone on to engage in other environmentally aligned initiatives within our wider network. SwopItUp in schools also continued to influence pupils’ understanding of the environmental impact of fast fashion and promote more sustainable consumption habits. We remain committed to re-engaging directly with schools and young people to deliver creative, youth-led action on climate and sustainability in future.

Consultation with stakeholders

Although teenagers remain central to SwopItUp’s mission, younger pupils have increasingly taken part in the program. Their feedback continues to shape our long-term planning. While the Creators Program was not delivered this year, we maintained informal contact with past participants to understand their evolving interests and priorities. Our network of Duke of Edinburgh volunteers continues to influence our direction. Many have gone on to work with other groups on environmental projects, and we remain in conversation with them to help guide future developments. University students also became a key stakeholder group this year. We consulted with student representatives and university student union staff while preparing the Portsmouth event, gathering insights that will inform our future work with this age group. Secondary schools that have previously hosted swaps remain an important source of feedback, particularly around how to embed clothing swaps into the school calendar with minimal support. Engagement typically involves geography and design technology teachers, with occasional contributions from senior leadership teams.
