Company activities and impact

The Lark Network (Lark) provides services to support established and aspiring women entrepreneurs in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas. This includes women who are freelancers, self-employed, and those running both for-profit and non-profit businesses or organisations. Lark has a particular focus on supporting women who face intersectional disadvantages that impact their ability to work (and are often the motivations for their entrepreneurial activity). Through its regular events, Lark provides a safe, understanding and supportive environment for entrepreneurial women who have caring responsibilities receive benefits or are from low-income households are neurodivergent have physical or mental health conditions This is an illustrative rather than an exhaustive list. We offer regular networking opportunities that help women develop social capital and build their support networks. Our Startup Sunday events include mini-workshops to support women with their personal and professional development. We have also run 2 training workshops this year; a Writers’ Retreat to help women with writing for their businesses, and a Canva Clinic to help them learn how to use this free online software to create impactful, on-brand designs. Focusing on intersectional disadvantage means Lark supports women who often fall through the gaps of mainstream startup support services. Our focus on being warm and approachable helps support women in the early stages of their startup journey, giving them a greater chance of success in their endeavours. The company has also expanded its board by bringing on two new Directors this year. This was a necessary step to enable the company to grow and improve its support offerings.

Consultation with stakeholders

Lark’s primary stakeholders are those it was set up to support: women (including members of the LGBTQIA+ community) who face additional barriers to self-employment or running an enterprise. Our regular in-person and online events, our online Facebook community, and our new WhatsApp group enable us to regularly engage with our members about our services and the support they need. The WhatsApp community has allowed members to connect in a new way, enabling members who are not able to make our in-person events, or do not use Facebook, to engage more with our service and with each other. This year, based on member feedback about what would encourage them to attend events, we have developed our Startup Sunday offering from simple networking events into mini- workshops, led by expert speakers, to support women’s personal and professional development. Now, as well as being an opportunity to develop their social capital, these events have provided support with skills development such as setting and achieving goals, brand identity, journaling for mental health and many others. In April 2024, we launched a business book club. Members had expressed a desire to read more and that, particularly for neurodivergent members, it would be helpful to be encouraged in and accountable for their reading. The book club is run through a WhatsApp channel in our community, and meetings are online, allowing members who cannot make it to our in-person events to engage with the network. In June 2024, we launched a new service to complement Startup Sunday - Lark Lunch Break. This was in response to member feedback that weekends were not always a good time for them to attend events. Lunch Break runs on the first Monday of each month.
