Company activities and impact

The Diaspora African Women's Support Network (DAWSUN) is an ethnic minority-led women community interest company based in Glasgow Scotland. DAWSUN works with African and Minority Ethnic (AME) communities across Glasgow to create a new era of gender and racial equity. DAWSUN is dedicated to lifelong learning, inclusion and innovation through research. Our mission is to "Inspire Women to Nurture, Lead and Excel". We research what works, challenge conventional wisdom and design new approaches to solving racial and gender inequalities in our community. The company was formed to bridge the paucity of research gap within the AME Third-Sector landscape. Since commencing operations in July 2019, DAWSUN has focused on research-led, impact-oriented initiatives that drive change in the AME talent agenda. Our vision is to inspire social change in our community through research, policy and practice. In 2024, DAWSUN CIC successfully implemented two programmes: A. Financial Services Skills Acquisition Programme This programme was designed to equip ethnic minority individuals with essential financial services knowledge, improving their employability in the finance sector and enhancing their ability to effectively manage personal and business finances. The training covered key areas such as: - Personal and Business Finance Management – Budgeting, saving, and credit management - Financial Literacy and Digital Banking – Understanding online banking, fintech solutions, and cashless transactions - Entrepreneurial Finance – Accessing funding and investment strategies. - Employment Preparation in Financial Services – CV building, interview skills, and networking opportunities Impact: - The participants completed the programme, gaining financial knowledge and practical skills. - Most of the participants increase in financial confidence was reported among participants, improving economic independence and stability. B. Sewing Hub for Ethnic Minority Women This initiative provided a dedicated space for ethnic minority women to acquire sewing skills, enabling them to explore self-employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. The hub focused on: - Basic and Advanced Sewing Skills – Garment making, alterations, and fabric design - Cultural Integration Through Craftsmanship – Showcasing African/Non-African-inspired fashion and textiles Impact: - Ten women participated in sewing and tailoring workshops, gaining practical vocational skills. - Improved mental well-being and social inclusion, as women built supportive networks and increased self-esteem through skill development. How Activities Benefit the Community. DAWSUN CIC’s initiatives directly addressed economic and social challenges faced by ethnic minority women in Glasgow. The Financial Services Skills Acquisition Programme enhanced financial literacy and employment prospects, while the Sewing Hub promoted economic self-sufficiency and cultural expression. These efforts: - Reduced financial exclusion by equipping participants with knowledge and skills to access banking and financial services, - Improved job prospects for participants through training and networking, - Strengthened community cohesion as participants-built networks and shared experiences in safe learning environments.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company’s primary stakeholders are African and other Minority Ethnic individuals living in different parts of Glasgow. Other stakeholders include people (men, women, children and young people) of African descents and friends of Africans residing in Glasgow. The directors of the company and the members of the management committee are individuals with many years of research, professional and third-sector experiences managing and executing projects in the UK, and in Africa. Diaspora African Women's Support Network (DAWSUN)’s approach to project development relies on constant dialogue between our research team and the local communities we serve. This is an iterative process built on primary data collection, analysis and consultation with members and leaders of AME communities in Glasgow. Through our research, community engagements, surveys and focus group meetings we develop activities that benefits the members of the communities we serve in different parts of Glasgow. What action, if any, has the company taken in response to feedback from its consultations? Based on our interactions with the stakeholders, we secured funding from National Lottery Community Funds for the sewing hubs and one of the directors developed and delivered the non-funded financial services training. Future Plans. Building on the success of 2024,Diaspora African Women's Support Network (DAWSUN) CIC aims to expand its impact by: - Scaling up the Financial Services Programme to reach more participants and include advanced training modules. - Expanding the Sewing Hub into a sustainable social enterprise, providing long-term employment opportunities. - Developing mentorship and peer-support networks for programme graduates. - Seeking additional funding and partnerships to enhance resources and extend programme reach. Diaspora African Women's Support Network (DAWSUN) CIC continues to operate for the community's benefit, with all surplus funds reinvested into programmes that support ethnic minority individuals in Glasgow.
