2. | ACCOUNTING POLICIES |
Basis of preparing the financial statements |
Turnover |
Turnover is accounted for as revenue when, and to the extent that, the company obtains a right to consideration in exchange for its performance of its obligations under the sales contract with the customer. The amount reported as revenue is the fair value of the right to consideration - usually the price specified in the contractual arrangement net of discounts and net of VAT, and after any allowance for credit risk and other uncertainties. |
In respect of long-term contracts and contracts for on-going services, turnover represents the value of work done in the year, including estimates of amounts not invoiced. Turnover in respect of long-term contracts and contracts for on-going services is recognised by reference to the stage of completion. |
Stocks |
Stocks have been valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value, after making due allowance for obsolete and slow-moving items. Cost is calculated on a first in, first out basis. In respect of work in progress, contracts are assessed on a contract-by-contract basis as contract activity progresses. The valuation includes a prudently calculated element of attributable profit, which is referenced to the stage of completion, anticipated sales value and additional costs required to complete the contract. |
Taxation |
Taxation for the year comprises current and deferred tax. Tax is recognised in the Statement of Income and Retained Earnings, except to the extent that it relates to items recognised in other comprehensive income or directly in equity. |
Current or deferred taxation assets and liabilities are not discounted. |
Current tax is recognised at the amount of tax payable using the tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the balance sheet date. |
Hire purchase and leasing commitments |
Rentals paid under operating leases are charged to profit or loss on a straight line basis over the period of the lease. |
Financial instruments |
Financial instruments are classified and accounted for, according to the substance of the contractual arrangement, as either financial assets, financial liabilities or equity instruments. An equity instrument is any contract that evidences a residual interest in the assets of the company after deducting all of its liabilities. |
