The Steven Campbell Trust: Annual Report 1st July 2023 - 30th June, 2024

The basic role of the trust is Education and Access

The aims of the company are:

To promote the legacy of Steven Campbell's work
To sustain and enhance the reputation of his work and the contribution he made to the development of Scottish Art on the international stage
To provide opportunities for artists and other creative individuals to benefit from the creative and imaginative power which Steven Campbell invested in his work
To provide support and recognition to young artists through several means

We intend to:

- finance an annual Hunt Medal for a final year student artist of great promise and talent at the Glasgow School of Art
- organise and finance an annual Steven Campbell Lecture by a leading academic, artist or commentator on the contribution of Steven Campbell's work
- provide an annual Steven Campbell bursary or grant to a young promising artist to travel and to broaden their horizons and artistic and creative abilities
- finance and organise Steven Campbell art workshops for young people in areas of need in Glasgow, Scotland and England
- provide a Steven Campbell mid-career bursary or grant to artists who may not have had the recognition they merit to buy materials or to travel exhibitions or to promote their work
- finance and organise Steven Campbell master classes for developing creative artists

Workshops for Young People - 8th - 9h February, 2024

This year, we were invited back to Kelvingrove Art Gallery, where a secure working space was provided in their education suit, as well as providing easels and other equipment - brushes, sponges and display boards. For the second year, CASS Arts donated a number of materials - paper, paints, and charcoal - we are grateful to CASS Arts for their generosity and delighted at our continued relationship with this company. Fourteen young people from five schools participated in an intensive drawing and painting workshop and were introduced to Steven's work by examining and viewing his original sketches, drawings, and paintings. This workshop complements what takes place in schools, providing the opportunity to sketch and paint a life model - something that is not within the capacity of schools. The workshops were led by Claire Paterson, the first winner of the Hunt Medal and the first winner of The Steven Campbell Scholarship. Claire's commitment to the Trust and her knowledge and experience have been invaluable. The young people's work is displayed on the Trust website.

Art is Nurture Initiative

The Trust is supporting a new school initiative called Art is Nurture, instigated by St. Mungo's High School in Glasgow. The programme aims to improve the mental health and well-being of some young people attending Glasgow schools. It is intended to facilitate small group interactions with young people experiencing social and emotional issues in school, build self-esteem, and make connections. This initiative is intended to meet the GCC policy aims aligned with Nurture, GIRFEC, and SHANARRI indicators, informed by Wellbeing Action Plans. This is a 4/5 week programme for 50/55 minutes in a Nurture or Art room. IMPACT Arts is providing training for staff to run these programmes. CASS Arts again has been generous in donating materials to the four schools that will be piloting the programme. Since Steven's work will be featured, the Trust will provide the background and visuals necessary to engage the young people. The schools involved in the pilot scheme are St. Mungo's Secondary, Hyndland Secondary, St. Andrew's High (East End) and St. Anne's Primary. The programme has been informed by 'The Art Room' model, an intervention run in schools in London with positive outcomes for young people.

The Hunt Medal 2024

The Steven Campbell Trust were delighted to attend the private preview event at Glasgow School of Art on Thursday, 30th May. Visiting GSA and seeing such a vast selection of talented artists was a pleasure. We want to thank GSA for extending this invitation, which was greatly appreciated; each year, we attend the Degree Show to make our annual award of The Hunt Medal to an artist who demonstrates poetic creativity in their work. After much discussion on the exciting work on the show, we were unanimous in our appreciation of the work of Erin McPhee and are delighted to announce that Erin is the 2024 recipient of our Hunt Medal award.

Erin McPhee: Artist's Statement
My practice explores life and the relationships we have with one another. Often referencing family memorabilia and photographs, I aim to create emotionally driven works that are honest and sincere. I frequently turn to paint as my preferred medium, as I enjoy the fluidity it can offer. This allows me to be intuitive with my marks and helps me immerse myself further into my feelings rather than details.

Hunt Medal Update

Last year's winner of the Hunt Medal, Eva Hewitt, having finished her Master's at GSA, was offered an artist in residency at The Nacional Museo del Prado, Madrid. Her skill, talent, and dedication to her art have been further recognised, having been awarded the Richard Ford Award 2024. This has now led to her first solo exhibition, which will take place in the Glasgow Art Club. We continue to support Eva in her early career and look forward to that continued relationship.

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of
The Steven Campbell Trust

I report on the accounts for the year ended 30 June 2024 set out on pages five to ten.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity's trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1)(a) to (c) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under Section 44(1)(c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of the independent examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention :

(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements

- to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations; and
- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with Regulation 8 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations

have not been met; or

(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
