Made with Clay studio teaches students the skills needed to create their own l work using clay. We have specialist tutors, artist grade materials, tools and equipment in order to do this. Students sign up to specific classes and are taught from the beginning stages of working with clay all the way up to running their own studio/ selling their own work with full support. We have trained several technicians and also two teachers. Some of the members have formed a co operative selling group but there are also students who make for pleasure and for the support of the other students in their making. In addition to running the studio, we also allow students to put on a selling event and take part in exhibitions. The local authority have told us they are happy with us providing self supporting art tuition and the students tell us that it supports their ambitions to improve their skills as well as having a positive impact on their mental health.
Our tutors and technicians have regular weekly contact with each other and keep a record of anything in the studio requiring attention which is discussed weekly. We are also in weekly contact with our students and ask for feedback regularly. At their suggestion we have set up several WhatsApp groups to support swapping of classes and glaze information. We have also held two specialist glazing days. This coming year, we are also training five new technicians who are going to be available to cover for our current technicians when they are away. It is the hope that there will be voluntary and paid opportunities for them to be involved in the studio. A larger wheel was purchased after several tall students told us the smaller wheels hurt their back while making.
