COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

MILK GLASGOW CIC

Company Number: SC479381 (Scotland)

Year Ending: 30 June 2024

Company activities and impact

We have run a programme of activities at 452 Victoria Road which has been specifically designed to bring New Scots together with the existing community in Govanhill. Activities have included, but haven’t been limited to Community Meals - we have witnessed firsthand the power of shared meals to strengthen connections and build relationships within the community. They also act as a space for individuals who are used to being the recipients of support to be able to “give something back”- this is incredibly powerful and important for feelings of self-worth. Peer support groups - finding connection and strength through shared experiences. Art Activism - using arts and crafts sessions to buffer difficult topics and allow for hard conversations to be had whilst keeping people’s hands busy. We have found this is a really good way to help people to open up and express themselves. Educational Sessions - we often get offers from solicitors, teachers and health practitioners who would like to hold workshops on immigration law, housing rights, women’s health, parental rights etc. IT Classes - digital skills are vital to accessing any services and there are many women we work with who still really struggle with computer technology - we have a waiting list for our current sessions. ESOL - without a level of English to effectively communicate, navigating already difficult systems becomes impossible - people need access to English classes to be empowered and not reliant on others - we have a waiting list for our current sessions. Hostile Environment Training - we have been developing a workshop to educate people about the realities of the asylum process and how it affects people directly. We would like to be able to offer this training to a wide audience so the information can be disseminated and participants learn the true effects of these dangerous policies as opposed to the misinformation that is often circulated on mainstream media. We have seen the following increased outcomes as a result of these activities: anti racist behaviour - through peer led education connectivity - amongst community groups as well as individuals creation and delivery of cooperative projects support for campaigns and community activism on Refugee issues coordination of wider community development between groups emotional and mental wellbeing resilience - both of the individual and the community community cohesion - working effectively together for the benefit of everyone strength through diversity

Consultation with stakeholders

We take a needs led approach to organising our services and are always adapting and reacting to the suggestions of service users. We regularly gather feedback on different projects and use this to make changes in what we offer and how we run things. We also gather feedback when doing outreach projects, working with other groups and at external events. People are invited to share what they’d like us to do at MILK through our social media and a suggestions box on site. “I have volunteered a lot and some places you know your role, it’s obvious you are limited to that. Here it’s different - I have been given the freedom to express myself and suggest ideas and I’m really grateful for that. You know you will always be heard here.”- ESOL volunteer We have a regular stream of enquiries from people who want the opportunity to donate their time and skills to support people who are newly arrived. This shows us that there is a strong desire to support refugees amongst the people of Glasgow. We know there is a need for these kinds of cohesive activities, if only from the sheer quantity of inquiries we receive every day from individuals and other organisations operating in the city. We have a large following on Social Media and we engage with our local community regularly through that. We get offers from volunteers as well as requests for different classes and sessions that we listen and respond to.
