Ulluminate CIC was set up to promote activities related to science, arts and culture in the communities of Lochbroom in the NW Highlands of Scotland. In our first year of operation we succeeded in attracting funding from a number of local private, public and third sector bodies towards putting on these events including: Ullapool Harbour Trust, The National Lottery, EDF Corriemoillie Education and Training Fund, British Science Association Highlands & Islands Climate Change Network. We further ran one-off events in order to raise funds from donations, including an evening on the Northern Lights, another on the re-engineering of Shore Street; a Hogmanay Ceilidh with a performance by the Gaelic Community Choir linked to a citizen science research project. We also worked with Developing Young Workforce West Highlands to provide work experience to two students who learned from our process of setting up the business and its development in the first year. Both were able to use this experience effectively in their university and job applications. The impact of these activities has been to greater appreciation of the activities of local groups and community cohesion. For instance, Ullapool Harbour Trust was encouraged by our event to apply for, and win, a prestigious engineering award. The ceilidh was a sold out event and gave new recognition to the Gaelic Community Choir. Our commissioned research on citizen science in Gaelic literature empowered citizens to get involved in monitoring our natural habitats in order to combat shifting baseline syndrome. Our local expert on Northern Lights has since gone on to have a following on Facebook and a new recognition for his experience which we hope to build on.
Our Stakeholders are the residents of Lochbroom and visitors to our area. Our consultation has been in the feedback received at our events; the ticket sales metrics and donations. Our first event focused on working with already established community groups to showcase their work and support future activities eg. the NW Highlands Geopark, Ullapool Sea Savers, Seawilding, Highland Community Broadband and Ullapool Harbour Trust.
Rachael Calder; £1,500 for project management. Anna van Oordt; £800 for schools and surrounding community liaison.
No transfer of assets other than for full consideration has been made.
