The 2023–2024 financial year was Camden United’s first full year of operation following the passing of our founder, Abdulaziz Munye. In his honour, we raised 26,000 through a community fundraiser and secured our highest income to date, including funding for our first full-time role from Camden Council and an Equality Fund grant from Camden Giving. These milestones strengthened our ability to deliver meaningful, consistent work with young people across the borough. Our activities directly benefited over 400 young people by providing free, accessible football and leadership opportunities in safe and inclusive environments. We ran weekly football training and league fixtures for: Under 12s (participating in the Camden Youth League) Under 14s and Under 16s (Hampstead Heath League) Two adult men’s teams (Middlesex Premier Division and Islington Midweek League) A newly launched women’s team, focusing on young Muslim women The women’s team was a standout achievement, offering a private, culturally safe space for young women to engage with football many for the first time. The group built confidence through regular training and requested to join a 5-a-side league. We supported a young woman to become their coach and helped her complete the FA’s Introduction to Coaching Football qualification, supporting leadership development within the community We also delivered the Camden Youth Partners Football Tournament for U14 U19s, in partnership with Camden Council’s Detached Youth Team, Fitzrovia Youth in Action, Pro Touch SA, Coram’s Fields, Kings Cross Brunswick Neighbourhood Association, and others. The event brought together around 150 young people from across Camden, with many volunteering to help run the day. It was a celebration of diversity, inclusion, and borough-wide cohesion, and built on our earlier collaboration for the FIFA World Cup tournament. Nike donated gifts for this event, which were distributed to participants a gesture that added value and recognition for the young people involved. Our men’s team also won the Islington Midweek League Invitation Cup, a proud moment that drew over 200 young people from across the borough to attend the final and show their support. The atmosphere reflected the strong community backing that surrounds Camden United and the role we play in bringing young people together. We strengthened partnerships with Coram’s Fields and Argent Kings Cross, who provided free or discounted pitch access. This support helped reduce our costs and ensured we could continue offering football programmes free of charge to young people who may otherwise be excluded due to financial barriers. All our work this year focused on community building, inclusion, and youth empowermen offering safe alternatives to violence, building confidence and leadership in young people, and creating opportunities to come together in celebration of culture and unity. Everything we delivered was grounded in the legacy of Abdulaziz Munye, and our commitment to using football as a force for change to improve youth safety in the borough.
Throughout the 2023 2024 financial year, Camden United actively engaged with a wide range of stakeholders, including young people, parents, volunteers, coaches, community partners, and funders. Our approach to consultation was informal but consistent, with regular conversations taking place through WhatsApp, in-person interactions at matches and training sessions, and online engagement through platforms such as Instagram. Young people were central to shaping the direction of our programmes. The launch of our women’s team, for example, was directly influenced by conversations with participants who expressed a need for a safe, private space to train. Similarly, decisions around which leagues to enter and adjustments to training schedules were informed by ongoing feedback from players and their families. We also remained responsive to our delivery partners, listening to their suggestions to ensure joint events such as the Camden Youth Partners Football Tournament reflected shared values around inclusion, celebration, and youth empowerment. While our consultation methods were not formalised during this period, they were embedded in our day to day operations and helped ensure our activities were relevant, responsive, and grounded in the lived experiences of our community.
