COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

REBELS BOXING GYM C.I.C.

Company activities and impact

Rebels Boxing Gym has provided amateur boxing classes to the community in which it operates, three times per week in the past financial year. It has provided two types of classes, being recreational/non-competitive classes and competitive amateur classes. The recreational classes were open to participants who wished to use boxing as a means of building up their general fitness and learn new skills. The competitive amateur classes were designed to provide the participants with an opportunity to further develop their boxing skills and train intensively with a view to competing in amateur boxing competitions. Both classes were provided at discounted/competitive rates compared to other service providers, and for those members who were not in a position to afford the discounted rates, the classes were provided free of charge. In the last financial year, Rebels Boxing Gym has provided free training to over 40 members. These members comprise primarily of young people in education, and many were introduced to the gym as referrals from the Metropolitan Police Service’s Child Exploitation Team, Gangs Unit and Engagement Team (i.e. young people who were identified as at-risk and would benefit from diversionary activities). Six of our boxers have also competed in boxing competitions within and outside of London, including in national level tournaments. The free or affordable training provided by the gym has provided opportunities for many young people to engage in a healthy activity with minimal costs, develop self-discipline, socialise positively, learn valuable skills and gain new experiences.

Consultation with stakeholders

The Company’s stakeholders include community members who use the gym – not all of them are from the residential area immediately surrounding the gym, as a number of our members reside in other parts of London. The Company continuously seeks and receives feedback from its members with respect to the quality of training. This is done organically through conversations with members during and after the sessions. Such feedback is rapidly actioned by the coaches, for example by adjusting the intensity of the training or delivering sessions focused on a particular skill. The Company also works with officers from the Metropolitan Police Service on an ongoing basis to provide opportunities for young persons who would benefit from a referral to the gym.
