Science Starz is a cross-community CIC that offers a mobile science experience to nursery and primary schools and in the local community (fun days, festivals, youth clubs, birthday parties, summer schemes, etc). Established in 2016, Science Starz delivers fun, hands-on science experiments to children in areas of social deprivation in order to address educational underachievement. Workshops are delivered by women on the path back to employment. The aim of Science Starz is two-fold: to increase attainment at GCSE level by early intervention at nursery and primary level; and to empower unemployed women, particularly mothers, in the community, thereby enhancing health and wellbeing of the main carers of the children and young people all over Northern Ireland. During the 2023-24 financial year, Science Starz continued delivering face-to-face workshops and creating at-home science/STEM kits to customers all over NI. Science Starz continued to assist women on the path to employment by having them facilitate workshops as well as create STEM kits.
The main company stakeholders are the children, teachers, youth club leaders, parents and industry clients. Children and teachers are given questionnaires at the end of each workshop package, asking what they enjoyed and what areas could be improved upon. So far, the feedback has been extremely positive, with some ideas on how the workshops can be improved upon. Some ideas include giving the children some resources to take home so that their family members can get involved in the learning as well. This is something we have implemented for some of our workshops, and in some cases we have invited parents in to take part in the workshops with their children, thus adding to the number of people benefitting from our Community Interest Company.
