Company activities and impact

Supportworks Orkney CIC supported two people with learning disabilities to undertake meaningful work for the public in Orkney at an affordable price. Our customers often were people who could not afford skilled tradespeople and did not require tasks to be done to a high standard. The main request for our services came from people seeking lawn mowing and small gardening jobs undertaken. We secured a handful of regular customers and mowed their lawns and removed their garden waste for recycling throughout the growing season. During the winter we were asked to provide dog walking and domestic cleaning tasks, again for a selection of regular customers. We explored some other avenues of potential service provision including wood cutting, barn clearances and furniture moving. Some tasks were limited by our combined physical attributes, availability of suitable transport and tooling. The community has benefited by having an option for a low skilled, low cost handyman service. This has been particularly beneficial to people who are elderly and on a low income. The community has also benefitted by having the opportunity to engage with our staff in a direct and purposeful way. This has given our customers the benefit of challenging their regular beliefs and assumptions and expanding their knowledge and experience of disability. Our staff have benefited by having the opportunity to serve our community by providing a service that is sought after and valued. They are appreciated for who they are and what they do and have felt valued for the work they have undertaken.

Consultation with stakeholders

Stakeholder 1: Workers Consultation 1: Ongoing review in partnership with workers to determine task preferences Action 1: Choice of direction for advertising and business promotion is based on worker preference coupled with customer requests. Stakeholder 2: Customers (general public) Consultation 2: Invitation on social media and through public services such as NHS community link practitioners for customers to consider Supportworks for any small job they require help with in and around the home and get in touch with suggestions or requests. Action 2: All small jobs considered and reviewed with workers and customers to determine suitability. Stakeholder 3: Orkney Islands Council Employability Support Service. Consultation 3: Review of range of tasks Supportworks undertakes with consideration for the further career and lifestyle opportunities for development of the workers. Review of business model and matching of Supportworks with other workers to grow the service. Stakeholder 4: Parents and carers of workers. Consultation 4: Consulation on suitability and satisfaction with workers participation in Supportworks activities. This was particularly important with non-verbal worker who may have had difficulty expressing themselves to management. Action: Modification of working hours and task durations to take into account physical and mental endurance capacity of workers and what they are involved with outwith working hours. Varying work demands to keep job interesting and engaging. Accommodating family holiday time and other competing demands as required.
