Report of the Trustees |
for the Year Ended 30 June 2024 |
The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 June 2024. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019). |
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES |
Objectives and aims |
Coman Each nan Eilean was formed in 1972 on the island of Eriskay to save Each nan Eilean (Eriskay Pony) from extinction, to conserve the breed and to procure, by controlled breeding, good specimens of ponies in the future. |
To set up, maintain and operate a Register of Horses. |
To promote study into the history, origin, and characteristic of Each nan Eilean and to encourage the use of the ponies for work and recreation especially in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, particularly in their natural habitat on the Isle of Eriskay and neighbouring islands. |
The society aim to provide support for the breeders and to establish and maintain a commercial future for the breed publicising Each nan Eilean progressively throughout the world. |
To encourage breeding with the pure mares and improve the holding facility, particularly for the stallions on permanent basis. |
Volunteer Contributions |
All society roles, including those of the Registrar, committee members, walking guides, event organisers, and volunteers, are undertaken by dedicated individuals who freely give their time. Their commitment is the backbone of our success. As a volunteer-led organisation, 100% of the funds we receive are directed towards the care of the ponies and the operation of the society. |
This report highlights another successful year for Comann Each nan Eilean-The Eriskay Pony Society (CEnE), achieved through the dedicated committee, members and supporters. Together, we continue to build a sustainable future for the Eriskay Pony. |

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE |
Charitable activities |
Breeding Program |
Comann Each nan Eilean-The Eriskay Pony Society (CEnE), members have successfully bred 14 healthy Eriskay Ponies over the last few years. This is a significant achievement for a small society with limited resources. We remain committed to our breeding program as long as there is interest from new owners who share our aims for preserving this unique breed. |
Equine Passports |
Currently, we rely on an external agency for printing equine passports. However, plans are underway to manage the printing process internally, streamlining operations and reducing costs. |
50th Anniversary Celebrations |
Following the success of our 50th Anniversary celebrations in 2022, where we organised and provided walking trails, Equine Expert talks, Heritage talks and community events, we continue to work to safeguard the future of the Eriskay Pony by holding similar events throughout the year. These events have been great for encouraging new members of the community to consider taking on membership and being involved to considering pony ownership. |
Eriskay Pony Walks |
We now offer regular Eriskay Pony Walks on Beinn Sgrithean, or through the lower township to meet the ponies for those who prefer an easier route. These walks not only raise essential funds for feed and vet costs, but also boost awareness about the breed. Participants consistently highlight these walks as a memorable part of their visit to Eriskay. |
National Eriskay Pony Centre |
In collaboration with Comann Eachdraidh Eirisgeidh, we are supporting the redevelopment of the old school into a Heritage Centre and Community Hub. This will include a National Eriskay Pony Centre where visitors and locals can learn about the pony's heritage, breeding goals, and the society's work. This initiative will provide a strong foundation to further protect the breed on its native island. |
Community Involvement |
Our events in the Eriskay Hall, supported by volunteers and younger community members, have been very successful. These gatherings offer participants a deeper understanding of the Eriskay Pony's importance and the need for its preservation. |
Gaelic and Community Collaboration |
We continue to collaborate with Ceòlas to host events in both Gaelic and English as part of their Summer and Autumn schools. Additionally, we work with CNAG to organise outdoor pony events, giving children hands-on experience with the ponies. These events help participants understand the care and personality of the ponies, whether in a stable setting or roaming freely on Eriskay. |
Expert Collaboration |
This year, we once again worked with equine behaviour expert Bonny Mealand, who brought a group of clients to observe and learn from our free-roaming herd. Bonny's expertise provides valuable insights into the ponies' behaviours and herd dynamics for her guests. CEnE hold events to work alongside Bonny's training which is always very welcomed by all who attend who hear first-hand from the experts who care for the ponies on the island.. |
Ruth Chamberlain's Support |
Ruth Chamberlain is a photographer who continues to generously support our efforts. Through sales of her calendar, Hidden Hoofbeat of Britain and Ireland, as well as through the sale of her framed photographs and snoods, Ruth donates a portion of her profits to the native pony societies and groups she works with. Her ongoing financial contributions and efforts to promote the breed are deeply appreciated. |
Merchandise and Fundraising |
Our merchandise sales contribute 100% of profits directly to the care of the ponies. These funds are vital to sustaining our operations. |

FINANCIAL REVIEW |
Financial position |
Total income received for the year was £1.396 (2023 : £4,359). Expenditure totalled £1,670 (2023 : £6,214), The resulting deficit is £274 (2023 :deficit of £1,855). |
FUTURE PLANS |
Future plans to raise funds towards having a base on the island where we can showcase the Eriskay Pony and its very important role on the island as well as showing their uses today. Create a base where visitors can meet with the ponies and go on planned trips to see the ponies in their natural habitat. Continue to raise awareness of the breed through social media which will hopefully encourage more breeders and people to support our aims. |
Future plans also include erecting a shed/stable to enable us to work with the free roaming herd and our stallions. This is important as they do require to be handled e.g. veterinary treatment or emergency situations |

I report on the accounts for the year ended 30 June 2024 set out on pages six to fourteen. |
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner |
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity's trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1)(a) to (c) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under Section 44(1)(c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. |
Basis of the independent examiner's report |
My examination was carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts. |
Independent examiner's statement |
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention : |
(1) | which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements |
- | to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations; and |
- | to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with Regulation 8 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations |
have not been met; or |
(2) | to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached. |
