Company activities and impact

Windrush Surgeries Windrush Defenders Legal C.I.C conducted weekly surgeries to assist people to apply to the Windrush Scheme to restore their legal status and citizenship so they can for example keep their jobs, access the NHS, travel abroad and return and we assisted people with claiming compensation through the Windrush Compensation Scheme. We also provided information such as benefits, debts, bereavement, health & wellbeing and signposted service users to various services in these surgeries. The Windrush Act Campaign The Windrush Act campaign seeks specific actions from the United Kingdom government to ensure long-term commitment to rectifying historical wrongs done to the African Caribbean people, protecting them from future recurrence the Windrush Scandal and addressing current race disparities. The Windrush Act Campaign is a campaign for law reform to protect future generations with legislation in a 'Windrush Act' that places a legal duty on public bodies to tackle the race disparities in Education, Criminal Justice, Health, Work, and Community Cohesion as exposed by the Governments Race Disparity Audit 2017. The 'Act' would also establish a Commonwealth Community Cohesion Fund'. This year focused on five core goals: Lobbying and Advocacy, Develop Legislative Changes, Create Public Awareness and Mobilise Supporters, Research and Education, Archiving We have designed a tour entitled ‘Building a Better Future’ to takes the ‘Windrush Act’ campaign around the country and eventually to Parliament; to raise awareness of the specific actions the campaign is seeking from the UK Government. The tour is a collaborative effort with network partners and takes the form of information sessions, discussions and workshops. We held our ‘Building Better Future’ tour event in South Manchester in May, at the West Indian Sports and Social Club community centre and North Manchester in September at the Rainbow Centre in association with the Windrush National Organisation, New Testament Church of God, Preston Windrush Generation and Descendants UK and The Seventh Day Adventist Church. These events have seen hundreds of people attending and participating, leading to increased awareness of the legal and civil rights implications of the Windrush Act. They have created a platform for dialogue between grassroot organisations, policymakers, and legal experts for repairing serious harm and building community cohesion for the Windrush Generation We have started drafting the amendments for the ‘Windrush Act’ which we will continue to work on with a focus group of legal and policy review experts. We have produced a leaflet and a banner entitled ‘Windrush Act Now’ to promote and create awareness of the Campaign. The leaflet has a QR code that takes you to a web page where you can sign up to be kept updated on the Campaign and links to information about Windrush Act. These leaflets and banners have been displayed and distributed widely at our own events as well as other public events. On Windrush Day the ‘Windrush Act’ was highlighted in a presentation in Alexandra Park attended by over 5000 people including the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, Afzal Kahn MP, the shadow Health Secretary and the Deputy leader of Manchester City Council We have begun a partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University looking at how we can work together on a project to conduct storytelling research into the intergenerational trauma relating to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). We have undertaken various archive sessions with the Head Archivist and Collections Engagement Officer at the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE Centre, about how to create accessible oral history collections, how to import files via Audacity software, how to index, inventory, and create summaries of the oral histories, conducting sensitivity reviews, creating short excerpts and clips and navigating the process of archiving. We have begun gathering oral history and have so far conducted a 2-hour interview of Prof. Sir Geoffery Palmer and we are in the process of contracting an independent Archivist that will catalogue and archive our work. Spark Mentoring Programme We developed and began the delivery of our mentoring programme entitle SPARK as part of the social objective of our “Burning Work” agenda. The programme offers a valuable opportunity for young people between the ages of 16-25 to receive guidance, support, and encouragement as they navigate the challenges of transitioning into early adulthood. The service aims to decrease disparities in youth employment for the Black community with a focus on descendants of the Windrush Generation.
