During the financial year ending 31 July 2024, MusicSeen CIC supported musicians and music professionals in the Liverpool City Region by improving visibility, access to resources, and community connections. Local artists were able to build visibility through 17 free live session videos and 18 short shoutout videos. These were shared publicly to help boost recognition and reach for grassroots talent. Over 2,000 musicians and professionals were added to a searchable online database, making it easier for the community to find collaborators, services, and opportunities. The 2023 Women in Music flyer highlighted over 500 women and gender-expansive artists. This contributed to better gender representation and visibility across the local scene. Three formal artist interviews were conducted to spotlight lived experiences and challenges in the industry. These supported a better understanding of what local artists need. MusicSeen collaborated with the University of Liverpool’s Virtual Engineering Centre to begin development of an AI chatbot. This tool is being designed to help artists access local music infrastructure. Website 1.0 was launched to provide free public access to the database, interviews, playlists, and other curated resources. A community survey in partnership with AGAIN Merch gathered data on barriers to sustainable merchandise production for local musicians. All services were provided free of charge. All work was delivered by unpaid directors and volunteers for the benefit of the local music community.
During the reporting period, MusicSeen CIC gathered feedback and input from the local music community through informal and low-barrier methods. Three formal artist interviews were conducted and included open questions about the challenges and needs of artists in the local scene. Ongoing consultation also took place through direct messages and conversations on social media platforms. These were used to guide content decisions and identify common community concerns. Peer-led curation of playlists and social shoutouts helped reflect local voices and preferences in a collaborative way. Structured guidance and advisory support were also provided by Dr Jen Davies and Dr Mat Flynn. Their expertise helped shape MusicSeen’s strategic direction, informed research involvement, and strengthened links between the CIC and wider music industry initiatives. All feedback received influenced the development of the website, the nature of content shared, and the areas of focus for future work. MusicSeen continues to maintain open dialogue with its stakeholders and adjust its activities based on community needs.
Directors’ remuneration: During the reporting period, a total of £2,400 was paid to directors for project-based work. This consisted of two payments of £1,200 each, split evenly between the two directors. The payments were funded through external grants and awards received by the CIC, and were made in recognition of specific work carried out to support the company’s activities. No other salaries, benefits, or reimbursements were paid to directors during the year. All remaining work was carried out on a voluntary basis.
