Company activities and impact

The company runs a Saturday school that provides formal German language tuition to children of families in Greenwich and South-East London. The majority of children grow up bilingually. The school rents premises from James Wolfe Primary School where it offers Saturday classes during school term time (30 weeks per academic year) for children aged 3-17 years, ranging from informal play groups for young children to formal tuition that prepares children for taking German GCSE and A-Levels. The company is a member of the Association of German Saturday Schools. In addition to teaching pupils to read, write and speak the German language, the school also introduces children to German culture, including seasonal craft activities, songs and celebrations. This includes German traditions children in the UK would not normally experience, such as making lanterns for St Martin’s Day in November, having a visit from St Nikolas in December, dressing up for carnival in February, as well as celebrating German Mother’s and Father’s Day in May. We were pleased to start the academic year 2023/24 at our school with 148 pupils in 13 classes. In the previous academic year, we opened a second nursery class, which was over-subscribed and now has a waiting list. The plan is to accommodate the children on the waiting list in the academic year 2024/25 by opening a second Reception class. For the year 2023/24, we have also been able to open a second Year 1 class to accommodate the children on our waiting list. We managed to find several new teachers and teaching assistants, all of whom were trained by our team leader for teaching and have shown great enthusiasm and creativity in their roles throughout the year. We will have further staffing changes in the new academic year 2024/25 but have already secured some suitable candidates. Relationships with the school where we rent our rooms have continued to be excellent, and we are confident that we will be able to secure a further classroom from September to accommodate the second reception class.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company’s key stakeholders are bi- or multi-lingual families living in or around Greenwich, South East London, and parts of Kent. Most families have at least one German-speaking parent or have spent a significant amount in a German-speaking country where the child attended a nursery or school setting. At least two directors are present every Saturday on the premises and therefore available for parents to talk to in person. The company reaches out actively to its community via several newsletters throughout the year and provides a dedicated email address as first point of contact for all electronic communication. Teachers offer regular parent consultations to discuss the children’s progress and receive feedback from parents (twice per year). Teachers also email parents weekly with a brief summary of that day’s lesson and to give ideas and suggestions on how to support the children with their learning at home. Parents are encouraged to contact the teachers by email with any feedback or concerns; some also speak to the teachers after the lesson if there is time. Some teachers will also seek out parents in person after the lesson to discuss any issues with the child.

Directors' remuneration

No remuneration was received by the directors for their services. The following are not directors’ remunerations but are disclosed here in the interest of transparency: Three directors received £6,500 combined for invoiced administration work regarding the management of the school, including continued support of teaching staff, providing regular information bulletins to parents, continued management of curriculum and organisational aspects of school management.
