COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

CONNECTING WITH NATURE CIC

Company Number: 14418720 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 October 2024

Company activities and impact

Connecting with Nature CIC was founded in October 2022 and this is the second of year trading as a CIC. We ran a variety of events including outdoor education, willow weaving, nature connection and Forest School sessions. This years funding came from the National Lottery /Forest School, to create 4 seasonal videos and purchasing equipment), and also from the Community Foundation Wales (Campfire cooking), which allowed us to charge a very small amount only, increasing accessibility for the community. We ran the Forest School at the Permaculture Gathering Wales and at Fire in the mountain family camp, and supported another home educating Forest school community in Llandrindod Wells. Sessions involved teaching traditional, land based heritage skills and crafts, such as willow weaving, basket making, woodworking, tool use, survival skills e.g. fire making, shelter building, foraging, learning about nature, traditional food preparation methods and cooking. We have been teaching seasonal arts and crafts in different natural settings locally and further afield. With a strong community focus we promote nature based learning and experiences through workshops, events and community activities, providing a service to local residents and holidaymakers. All sessions promote ecological awareness and restoration. Sessions have also involved Music, stories and activities that include international traditions as well as Welsh heritage. We encourage bi-lingual elements as much as possible. We encouraged healthy-living activities for mental, physical and emotional wellbeing and positive social connections.. In all our work we have carried on building links within the local community, such as existing enterprises, community members etc.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company’s stakeholders are community members that participate in the sessions as well as existing local enterprises, charities and CIC’s that support our work. All three directors have been living in the area for several years. The Forest School group ‘ Young Rangers’ that now runs under the umbrella of the CIC was set up about 8 years ago and attendance remained steady with some small fluctuations in numbers, due to participants' personal circumstances. During each term we have up to 4 new families who try out our sessions for the first time. We usually have between 15 and 20 people attending per session and are very happy with the uptake. Our stakeholders are from diverse backgrounds, we offer sessions for parents and children of all ages, children attending school as well as home educated children and nature experiences for adults. We facilitate supportive networks by linking existing groups to different sectors of the community to strengthen community ties. Here in this part of Ceredigion we have vibrant diverse groups and our sessions have been attended by Welsh, English, German and Polish participants, encouraging understanding of different communities whilst having meaningful engagements. The company has provided work for local residents on a self employment basis. We continue to have 6 skilled staff that support the company with their activities as and when needed. We see great benefits in our work for the community, our sessions have been proven to encourage self reliance, resilience, self confidence and support healthy living for our stakeholders. We put a high emphasis on consultations and feedback to ensure our work is relevant for our participants. Our stakeholders have been letting us know their needs and wishes on a regular basis, we always encourage informal feedback during our sessions and we ask for regular feedback in the form of filling in questionnaires after a certain number of sessions.
