Directors' report period ended 31 July 2024

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 31 July 2024

Principal activities of the company

During the year end July 31st 2024 the EHWB CIC has gained in its ability to function if only in a small way still. By being awarded a grant from the Ratcliffe Trust for the Mersea Oyster Tendle Project it has grown in confidence in the local area. This has proved to be such a success and has allowed us to investigate further funding for more projects. The online presence is growing and we are working hard to research more on the vessel's heritage. We are looking after a number of the fleet as well as rebuilding yet another boat. We feel very confident that there will be a continuation of the work we are doing and over the coming five years there will be plans to achieve a working yard to teach the skills required to safeguard these important vessels.

Year Ending: 31 July 2024

Company activities and impact

The company operates to research, share and learn more of the heritage working vessels of Essex and help to preserve the skill sets to preserve the vessels and associated tools used in the industries associated with the coastal communities of Essex. This year we we successful in being awarded a grant to find out how to make a Mersea Oyster Tendle, a basket on the endangered list of the heritage crafts of UK. We held a number of workshops at the Mersea Island Museum for local people interested in helping to solve the puzzle of how to construct one of these baskets. This was a great success and we achieved producing a number of tendles and attending the annual Native Oyster Dredging Competition. From this we then applied for further funding to host a number of community hub meeting in the following year. We have had a number of apprentices attend the boat sheds to learn the endangered skill of clinker wooden boat building. We restored one of the sheds to be able to host a number of workshops in. We have attended a number of community activities to spread the word of the importance of keeping these vessels safe for future generations.
