Company activities and impact

During the financial year 3 April 2023 - 30 April 2024, Canal Dream CIC continued to animate the historical canal with emerging arts. We use the waterways as maps and boats as creative spaces to deliver site-specific, multi-arts events that support emerging artists, engage local communities, and revitalise canal environments. Key activities this year included: IWA’s Canalway Cavalcade 2023 (Little Venice, 28 Apr - 1 May) * In partnership with Slash Arts, we showcased Nadir Tharani’s 25-year retrospective aboard our boat, with rooftop performances and music. * Impact: Awarded co-runner-up for Best Illuminated Boat; supported 80+ emerging artists with free venues and high-visibility platforms. Canal Dream Art Festival 2023 (Kings Cross, 23-25 June) * A free, not-for-profit, multi-arts event co-created with 5 programming partner organisations and 5 boats. * Impact: Involved 15+ curators, 100+ emerging artists, and launched a UK–China artist exchange supporting 8 Chinese and 4 British artists in residence. London Design Festival 2023 Partner Programme (Kings Cross, 16-24 Sept) * Canal Dream became an official partner of LDF. With programming partners including Global Generation, Word on the Water, and Slash Arts, we delivered exhibitions, community events, and a Canalside Discussion. * Impact: Launched the Canal Dream Hub and The Canal Dreamer zine; involved 3 boats and reached an audience of over 700 people. These programmes benefited the community by: * Supporting early-career and underrepresented artists * Providing inclusive cultural experiences for boaters, residents, and marginalised groups * Activating underused canal spaces through participatory public art * Promoting environmental awareness and cross-sector collaboration Through strong partnerships locally and internationally - including with Global Generation, Word on the Water, London Design Festival, and Aranya Theater Festival 300 Migratory Birds - we strengthened connections between people, place, and the canal environment. Community feedback shows a growing sense of belonging, inspiration, and shared stewardship. We remain committed to expanding this impact and reimagining London’s waterways as spaces of creativity, nature, community, and heritage.

Consultation with stakeholders

Stakeholders: Our stakeholders include: * Members of the canal community (e.g. boaters, towpath users, canal-side residents) * Local and international emerging artists and creatives * Local organisations and businesses * Event participants and audiences * Cross-sector collaborators (e.g. in design, education, and environmental sectors) Consultation Methods: Throughout the year, we consulted stakeholders through: * Collaborative planning sessions with community members and partners * One-to-one meetings and ongoing dialogue with partner organisations, artists, and boaters * Informal conversations during events and workshops * Post-event feedback from artists, audiences, and partners * Social media engagement and community message channels (e.g. email, WhatsApp groups, and Instagram) Actions Taken in Response to Feedback: We responded to stakeholder feedback by: * Programming more inclusive and accessible activities in response to requests for broader community participation * Improving event logistics and communication, particularly around mooring, accessibility, and collaboration timelines * Strengthening co-curation practices to ensure community voices help guide programme direction * Launching The Canal Dreamer zine to give artists continued visibility beyond events We remain committed to a participatory, responsive, and place-based approach, using consultation to build trust and deliver meaningful, co-created projects across London’s waterways.
