Notes to the Financial Statements

for the Period Ended 31 July 2024

  • 1. Accounting policies

    Basis of measurement and preparation

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions of Section 1A (Small Entities) of Financial Reporting Standard 102

    Turnover policy

Turnover is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable, net of discounts and value added taxes. Turnover includes revenue earned from the sale of goods and from the rendering of services. Turnover from the sale of goods is recognised when the significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods have transferred to the buyer. Turnover from the rendering of services is recognised by reference to the stage of completion of the contract. The stage of completion of a contract is measured by comparing the costs incurred for work performed to date to the total estimated contract costs.

    Other accounting policies

Taxation ======== A current tax liability is recognised for the tax payable on the taxable profit of the current and past periods. A current tax asset is recognised in respect of a tax loss that can be carried back to recover tax paid in a previous period. Deferred tax is recognised in respect of all timing differences between the recognition of income and expenses in the financial statements and their inclusion in tax assessments. Unrelieved tax losses and other deferred tax assets are recognised only to the extent that it is probable that they will be recovered against the reversal of deferred tax liabilities or other future taxable profits. Deferred tax is measured using the tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the reporting date and that are expected to apply to the reversal of the timing difference, except for revalued land and investment property where the tax rate that applies to the sale of the asset is used. Current and deferred tax assets and liabilities are not discounted Provisions ========= Provisions (ie liabilities of uncertain timing or amount) are recognised when there is an obligation at the reporting date as a result of a past event, it is probable that economic benefit will be transferred to settle the obligation and the amount of the obligation can be estimated reliably

COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

WRITE OUT LOUD 2015 CIC

Company Number: 09670314 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 July 2024

Company activities and impact

Write Out Loud began running poetry events in 2003, created its community poetry website in 2005 and has run as a CIC since 2015. For the period August 2023 – July 2024, Write Out Loud continued to carry out its activities in two main areas: 1) Running poetry events and workshops for the community 2) Providing website facilities for (i) users to upload and discuss poetry (ii) disseminating news about poetry in the UK (iii) promoting poetry events UK wide, not just those run by Write Out Loud. We continued support events via our Poetry Gig Guide, listing 127 new events. The Gig Guide is a valuable resource that connects community poetry events with our online community of people interested in poetry who use our website. This year we introduced an improved interface for finding gigs by location, date and keywords. Elsewhere on the site 193 poetry news and reviews articles focusing on the interests of the poetry community were published. We also provide online messaging services to specific poetry groups to allow them to organise events and develop their own communities within the site. The site has a flourishing online of poets, many of whom have been members for several years. In the financial year 2023-2024, users published over 4000 poems generating discussion and comment among community members. Write Out Loud continued to run monthly open-mic poetry nights in Wigan, Bolton, Stockport, Sale and Woking. We stay in contact with donors to the site to find out why they value the site. An example of feedback received was "You all do a marvellous job and that site helped me enormously during a very difficult time in my life. And I've also met some marvellous people through the poetry world."

Consultation with stakeholders

The organisation stakeholders are its website users, individual, developing poet/performers, volunteers who provide content and run the website, volunteers who organise poetry events and those who attend them, as well as other organisations who provide services or information to individual poets, such as competition and educational opportunity organisers. We continue to receive feedback from website users and make improvements to the site. An example of this was improved interface for the Gig Guide and easier sharing to other social media sites.
