COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

BATTLE FOLKLORE FESTIVAL CIC

Company Number: 13515939 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 July 2024

Company activities and impact

Battle Folk and Fable organises event and workshops throughout the year to support new and emerging creatives, by providing subsidised rehearsal space, and opportunities to work alongside established artists to learn new, or hone existing skills. We also provide space to perform and show case creative work, and paid for opportunities for new creatives to help launch a career and develop a portfolio of work. We also champion local businesses and small enterprises. We run workshops and fun events for all members of the community to take part in. The first Battle Folk and Fable Festival took place over three days during the August bank holiday 2024 in the market square in Battle. Leading up to the festival multiple different making workshops took place at various different locations throughout the town and surrounding areas. The making groups created decorative a variety of different items which were used throughout the festival to make the event look wonderful, but just, if not more importantly to involve lots of different people to participate. We worked with other organisations; local care homes, loneliness groups, schools, youth groups, brownies, men in sheds etc. Collectively all of these different groups made knitted bunting, wooden creatures, signs etc. Some individuals felt unable to join a group but wanted to participate and made things at home; these items were collected. We have had wonderful feed back from these creative sessions; people have made friends, felt included and developed new skills. The festival itself showcased new as well as established artists. We we were able to sponsor a young fine artist to create graphics for the festival. This was a paid for professional booking to help kick start a career. This contract spans 12 months which enables the artist to work on multiple different pieces throughout the year. This year we are introducing another sponsored role: The festival laureate. We are looking to support a new writer, again with a paid commission, to write new stories, poems for the festival, we are also hoping that this will link with the local council; the writer will also write pieces for the broader town as well as for the C.I.C. This further cement our connection with our community and local council The festival show cased local performers, we had established artists alongside new performers; we had a diverse program which included lgbtq performers at our spoken word event: “Folk you yer Battle Axe”. We provided free entertainment and workshops throughout the day for all ages The festival also held an artisanal market providing selling opportunities for makers, the stalls were offered at a low price enabling small and new creatives opportunities to sell their work. This was a great success for the festival and for the stall holders. We have developed string links with our local council and schools and have bene approached to develop future events with the local council and work with specific groups in the future. This helps us to grow our community reach and expand our program to a wider audience. We are in the early stages of acquiring a venue where we will operate as a community hub. This is an exciting development and links us with metal health services, citizens advice and multiple creative groups.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our stakeholders are our committee members, and local community. We hold monthly committee meetings and agree on projects, plan events and raise money. We also consult with individuals who attend any of our events, collecting feedback on the activity that have attended and ideas fro future activities; additionally we consult regularly with and work with our, local council on our future plans.
