U-turnships is a Community Interest company that focuses on working with young people who have been marginalised by mainstream education and are therefore on the verge of or have been excluded from school. The strategic focus of U-turnships is therefore consists of early intervention measures to prevent gang grooming and criminal activity by engaging with the youth through mentorship, whilst encouraging vocational skills and activities that can be used to garner an interest in a specified career path. Through the work we do, we have mentored local youth through music incubator programmes, physical activity with gym sessions, and a half term youth club all of which have been free for them to access. As a result, we have seen significant impact with numbers growing by each session, whilst achieving integration amongst our young people whereby there has previously been a division mainly due to cultural and other differences with referrals from youth offending services, schools and parents who have all experienced the positive impact in the work we do.
We have consulted with stakeholders such as the local police as we sit on the Diversity and Inclusion Board for Essex Police and are members of the Thurrock Independent Advisory Group. We are regularly advised us on local issues that are affecting our young people as well as various safeguarding measures in order to keep our young people safe. For example, we have ensured that we do not have conflicting ‘gang members’ present on our site at any time through the intel we receive. We ensure that our documentation is updated yearly which ensures we operate within legal parameters. These include Safeguarding, Risk assessments and Health & Safety. We regularly consult with our young people regarding the kind of activities they would like to partake in, and we ensure that we provide this information in our funding applications, so their voice is heard and we are catering to their needs. This has been the main factor in maintaining engagement and an increase in the number of youth we work with.
