Principal activities of the company

Society of Black Academics (SBA) Directors' Report for the year ended 30 September 2024 Principal Activities The Society of Black Academics (SBA) is a company limited by guarantee, formally registered with Companies House in the United Kingdom. SBA was established as a unique initiative to serve as a community and voice for Black academics and aspiring scholars. The principal activity of the company is to provide a platform for Black academics to share experiences, rethink career plans, and effectively plan for success through professional development and networking events. SBA does not operate for profit, does not charge membership fees, and has no income or business transactions during the reporting period. Our company is formalized and registered solely to lend structure, credibility, and legitimacy to our work in supporting Black academics. Activities During the Year During the financial year 2023–2024, SBA organised a range of impactful events to fulfil its mission: 21 March 2024: Hosted an online webinar titled "Degree Apprenticeship Opportunities for Learners and Academics." 27 April 2024: Organised an online event titled "A Guide to Developing an Outstanding MSc Research Dissertation." 14 June 2024: Conducted an online event titled "Connecting Your Research with the UK Parliament," providing insights into public engagement for researchers. 6 September 2024: Held our 4th Annual Conference in-person at the University of Bristol, titled "Creating the Space, Voice, and Opportunities to Demonstrate Black Excellence." These events reflect SBA’s ongoing commitment to advancing the careers of Black academics by creating spaces for dialogue, learning, mentorship, and showcasing Black excellence within academia. Future Outlook The Society of Black Academics will continue to operate on a not-for-profit basis. The organisation aims to expand its programme of events, strengthen its community impact, and remain a vital platform for Black academics to develop and thrive within higher education. The SBA does not have any full-time paid employees. All academics involved with the SBA are doing so on a voluntary basis. All academics work with SBA as a service commitment to their profession. I believe that the work of SBA continues to address a significant need within the academic sector and are committed to building upon the foundations laid during the 2023–2024 financial year.
