Models For Heroes (M4H) provides model making material and tools to organisations which support veterans, armed services and emergency services personnel around the UK. Through model building, individuals are provided with an opportunity to engage in a positive diversion activity which is often associated with revisiting pastimes from positive childhood memories. Modelling can help an individual improve their mental health by developing new skills and fine motor control. Model making is a social hobby, which M4H facilitates through regular group activities, attendance at model shows, and online communities. During the financial year 2023-24, M4H dispatched over 1500 model kits, and supported model making sessions via a network of volunteers across the UK. M4H has a thriving online and in-person model building session network, delivering 100 hours of in-person sessions, and 30 hours of online sessions each month. Support workers are able to make referrals for potential beneficiaries to receive a model making starter box, and M4H are proud to have supported over 150 individual referrals via their scheme in 2023-24.
The company’s stakeholders include the individual beneficiaries who attend model making sessions or receive referrals, professional support workers who refer their clients to Models For Heroes, host organisations who provide venues for model building sessions, and the volunteers who facilitate online and in-person modelling sessions. Models for Heroes received funding from St James’s Place Charitable Foundation and the Red Arrows Trust to support existing beneficiaries in the further development of their hobby. Through this grant scheme Models for Heroes was able to purchase approximately £2,500 of specialist equipment for beneficiaries during the 2023-24 financial year, including equipment such as magnifying glasses, specialist hand stabilising tools, and airbrushing spray booths. All recipients were asked for their views and feedback on this scheme, which included a questionnaire on the quality of the items received, the impact they have had upon their hobby activities, their communication with M4H, whether they would recommend the scheme to others and whether there were any recommendations for change of this support system. All recipients confirmed they were very satisfied with the items received, reported positive impacts upon both their model making and wellbeing, and would recommend the scheme to others. Arising from this stakeholder feedback the grant scheme will continue in its current format during the 2024-25 financial year, and ongoing financial support for this will be explored. Feedback received from beneficiaries, professional support workers and host organisations is also published on our website and can be accessed at: https://www.modelsforheroes.org.uk/impact-and-report/.
