The company was created to secure the conservation, protection, management, restoration and maintenance of the Italian Garden at Great Ambrook, a listed garden built in the early 1900s and considered to be of national importance. It was awarded a £48,900 National Lottery Heritage Fund grant in March 2019 for restoration work and community engagement activities that started in 2020, and a second grant of £188,050 in April 2023. The second round of funding has enabled restoration work on the summerhouse to be completed, the restoration of a hothouse to provide volunteer facilities, and with assistance from a local stonemason, our volunteer team has been trained to restore the stone paths and terraces. This will improve access for visitors making the paths and steps safer. Our volunteer team, which has grown to 30, continues to carry out maintenance of the newly planted areas, and they now work 3 days per week. The garden provides part-time employment to one landscape contractor 1 day per week. We have continued to open the garden for events and have extended the offering to include a series of summer talks by prominent speakers on topics related to the history of the garden.
The company’s stakeholders are our volunteer team, the local community, visitors to the garden, local charities, businesses and schools that we partner with to deliver the restoration programme and Heritage Lottery Fund project. Consultations were carried out as part of both HLF grant applications in order to evaluate project costs and suitable activities to engage with the local community and ways to promote the garden to a wider audience. We have regular feedback sessions with the volunteer team and request post event feedback from visitors.
