COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

SCREAMING ALLEY CIC

Company Number: 12115850 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 July 2024

Company activities and impact

Screaming Alley CIC is a Thanet-based live arts organisation committed to empowering marginalised voices - particularly working-class, neurodivergent, LGBTQIA+ and female-identifying artists - through inclusive, high-quality live performance, professional development opportunities, and radical community engagement. We produce regular cabaret-style events that showcase a mix of live music, drag, dance, comedy, and visual art - providing a platform for independent artists to develop and present their work, and creating joyful spaces for audiences across social and generational divides. In 2023/24, we significantly expanded our artist development work through the growth of The Screaming Marys, our all-women community performance troupe. We introduced a series of structured courses designed to support both personal and professional development. Participants received training in performance techniques, costume design, production management and event planning - developing confidence, creative skills and leadership potential within a supportive peer-led framework. Alongside this, we implemented a Buddy Scheme to support emerging performers - particularly neurodivergent artists and those with less experience of touring - by pairing them with trained volunteers who provided assistance and pastoral care when performing outside of Thanet. Throughout the year, we provided paid opportunities to over 20 freelance artists, producers, and creatives, and reached more than 1,500 audience members through events, workshops, and outreach activity. We also engaged in a focused period of strategic business development, undertaking an organisational review and refining our vision and governance to ensure Screaming Alley can grow sustainably and continue to serve our community for years to come.

Consultation with stakeholders

Screaming Alley CIC engages regularly with a wide range of stakeholders including our local community in Thanet, individual performers and creatives, peer organisations, and our core audiences. Our approach to consultation is informal, responsive, and embedded in the way we work. We maintain active communication through in-person conversations at events, email newsletters, social media engagement, and feedback sessions with both participants and audiences. The Screaming Marys performance group, in particular, has provided a consistent feedback loop - shaped through our weekly meet-ups that involve workshops alongside shared reflection. Many of our artistic developments, including the introduction of structured training and the Buddy Scheme, emerged directly from conversations with attendees and session leaders of this group about barriers to participation and progression. We also hold periodic creative planning sessions with freelance collaborators, and have received input from local partners and consultants through our ongoing organisational development work. This year, we’ve taken steps to formalise feedback mechanisms, ensuring that the perspectives of artists and community members directly inform our future planning and programming. This inclusive, grassroots approach ensures that Screaming Alley remains responsive to the needs and aspirations of the people we serve - while strengthening our capacity to foster meaningful and lasting impact.
