The objects of the Company are to provide positive activities which benefit the community and, in particular (without limitation), to provide a counselling and support service to residents and people working in Rossendale and surrounding areas. The main focus of the organisation is suicide prevention, reducing social isolation and promotion of inclusion. Developing confident and positive mindsets, the organisation creates resilience and healthy mental health awareness. Obtaining funding enhanced our free group support sessions. Bringing likeminded people together and encouraging users of the groups to speak out about shared experiences broke down barriers and opened pathways to openly talk about ill mental health. One of our funded projects, ‘Spring into Action’, focused on renovating and maintaining a local village green during the Spring months, using nature to promote healthy mental health by improving self-esteem and reducing loneliness. We collaborated with other local groups to strengthen our offerings, promoting our ethos of ‘Together We’re Stronger’. The project was funded by Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board, supported by BPRCVS. The project provided 107 session spaces from 10 sessions and a total of 42 hours delivered. Majority of the grant funding was spent on the village green maintenance equipment (such as strimmer’s and tools etc) this provided sustainability of the groups and the sessions continue to be provided using the equipment purchased. To keep overhead costs to a minimum, we vacated our rented office, which, unfortunately, had an impact on the services we offered and reduced our 1-2-1 sessions, only dealing with people that benefit well from our services. Our volunteer pool reduced, therefore, we had to conduct the 1-2-1 meetings in public places, such as a cafe, which, in turn, reduced the level of discussions taking place. We continue to promote our free training as provided by the zero suicide alliance and we promote the telephone support services on offer such as Samaritans. We continue to reach out to members of our services through social media platforms and provide self help techniques to help local people cope with changes that affect their mental and physical health. We use our ever-building network to signpost the people that we engage with. Our impact questionnaires highlight the changes we are making to people’s lives are positive.
The company’s stakeholders are residents and workers of Rossendale, and in the surrounding area. The directors of the company have lived in Rossendale for a number of years and developed the business model for the organisation based on impacts reported and on their experience of dealing with ill mental health in varying capacities. We ask users of the groups fill in a short questionnaire about the impact our sessions have had on their own mental health, this has helped us to build up a profile of local consumers’ needs and what we can do to meet them more effectively. Our research has enabled us to identify that Rossendale has historically had high amounts of suicide, we encourage people of our community to get involved to helped loved ones to deal with ill mental health.
