COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

NORTH SOMERSET TRAINING COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY

Company Number: 07691184 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 July 2024

Company activities and impact

During the financial year, North Somerset Training has been actively engaged in providing a diverse range of free activities aimed at supporting digitally excluded residents, individuals on low incomes, those in recovery from substance misuse, people experiencing poor mental health, and those facing isolation within the North Somerset community. These activities, including workshops, taster days, short courses, and qualifications, are thoughtfully designed based on community feedback to directly address the identified needs of their clients. The company has delivered a variety of courses and support mechanisms, such as Functional Skills, Basic IT, Office Skills, Driving Theory, Arts and Crafts, Creative Writing, Mental Health Awareness, Resilience and Wellbeing, and Aromatherapy, often in partnership with local education providers. Notably, many of these activities are offered free of charge to adults receiving means-tested benefits, with some specifically tailored to particular groups, like the Aftercare group therapy and sound healing for those in recovery, and Digital Skills for individuals over 55. Recognising the challenges faced during the winter months, North Somerset Training also operated as a Warm Space, providing a welcoming environment where anyone could access a hot drink, engage in conversation with volunteers, and stay warm. Furthermore, they addressed digital poverty by offering free SIM cards through the databank, providing six months of free data, calls, and texts to those struggling with data costs. Their community hub also serves as a vital resource for practical support, assisting individuals with online form completion for essential tasks like house searching and benefit applications. The hub further extends its community benefit by hosting meetings for AA, CA, and NA. A significant aspect of North Somerset Training's impact lies in the engagement of volunteers, many of whom are individuals who have previously benefited from the hub's services. This cyclical model of support demonstrates a deep integration within the community and fosters a sense of empowerment and contribution. Overall, North Somerset Training's activities have had a profoundly positive impact on the community, demonstrably changing lives. Individuals who have utilised their services have progressed to volunteering roles, secured paid employment (both full and part-time), and accessed further education, highlighting the tangible benefits and transformative power of their initiatives.

Consultation with stakeholders

Building on our community-focused approach, we actively seek input through various consultation methods. We gather valuable insights via focus groups, providing a platform for in-depth discussions and a nuanced understanding of community needs. Feedback forms offer a structured way for individuals to share their experiences and suggestions regarding current and future activities. Furthermore, we leverage social media channels to engage with a wider audience, gather opinions, and stay informed about emerging community requirements. This multi-faceted consultation strategy ensures that our services remain relevant, impactful, and truly reflective of the needs of the digitally excluded, low-income residents, those in recovery, individuals experiencing poor mental health, and those facing isolation in North Somerset.
