Company activities and impact

Queer Yoga North C.I.C. has been awarded funding from the National Lottery Community Fund to conduct the Lavender Lounge project in Middlesbrough, which focuses on wellbeing through yoga and other activities. Since this project began, there have been 145 attendances by 33 individuals from within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, plus community (LGBTQIA+). These sessions have provided participants with wellbeing activities in a safe, sober, accessible, neurodivergent-friendly space with LGBTQIA+ peers where they are accepted and queer identities respected. Wellbeing activities in the Lavender Lounge include yoga, crafts, boardgames, quiet activities like journaling and jigsaws, as well as book and film discussions. In feedback questionnaires, participants have reported improved mental and physical health (including improvements with chronic pain), and a stronger sense of belonging with more connection to LGBTQIA+ networks and peer support. Queer Yoga North C.I.C. also conducted wellbeing events in other areas around Teesside, including Stockton, Saltburn and Middlesbrough. These sessions focused on yoga, with some craft activities wrapped around the main physical wellbeing activity.

Consultation with stakeholders

Feedback has been gathered via an online survey completed by 13 regular participants. They answered questions about the benefits of the sessions (social and health), inclusivity and accessibility, and gave suggestions for improvements or new activities to be added. Informal feedback is also gathered regularly through conversations with participants during face-to-face sessions. There has been communication with funding bodies to inform them of any programmed changes and to pass on participant feedback about the benefits of the activities.

Directors' remuneration

Mookaite Jasper Simpson-Smith, a director of the CIC, has been remunerated on a sessional basis as a yoga instructor and as an assistant for the Lavender Lounge project. These were hourly-paid freelance roles. From 26th May 2023 to 31st May 2024, Mookaite was paid £1,834 in total for yoga instruction and assistance. Helen Franks did not receive any remuneration and served in a volunteer role. All previous directors listed on Companies House were volunteers.
