Got Your Six UK CIC was incorporated as a Community Interest Company in August 2023 providing a military specific therapy service, before expanding to open a Community Hub in Wincanton, Somerset in June 2024. Got Your Six UK took over an old, dilapidated bank and worked tirelessly over three-months to refurbish the building, transforming it into a welcoming, calm, safe space for the whole community. Got Your Six UK was formed to support the mental health and wellbeing of those within the military community, including serving personnel, veterans, their spouses, and their families. Whilst the community hub, bank vault bookshop, pre-loved shop, and wellbeing garden are open to the whole community, the therapeutic services are military specific, in line with the company’s not-for-profit aims and objectives. The community aspect reduces isolation and aids integration between the local military and civilian communities. As part of widening the support available to the local community, Got Your Six UK provides a venue for local organisations and services to run drop-in clinics. Local solicitors, health coaches, mortgage advisors, utilities support, occupational health, and holistic healing therapies, to name just a few. Got Your Six UK specialise in offering military specific trauma-informed therapy, providing peer support mentors, and access to a range of welfare organisations. The social aspect of the project enables those who serve(d) the opportunity to socialise and connect with likeminded individuals, share experiences, and create the camaraderie which is so often lost upon leaving the forces. It allows those who have left the services a chance to ‘return to the tribe’ and those who continue to serve a place to offload stresses and gain support from those who have ‘been there, seen that, got the t-shirt’. As a whole, the sense of belonging and being a part of something again can be revitalising and, in some cases, lifesaving. On a more sombre note, suicide intervention is also a key area in which Got Your Six UK provides support. It is no secret that those who serve can be at increased risk of self-harm and suicide, particularly once they leave the armed forces. Got Your Six UK has offered suicide intervention and prevention support to 15 people to date and works closely with local organisations to create a safety net around them to ensure no one ‘slips through the net’ and becomes another devastating statistic. The opening of the Community Hub in Wincanton would not have been possible without the two initial generous grants received, totalling close to £27,500. These enabled the organisation to cover refurbishment and set up costs, ensure overheads were covered for the first six months minimum, and subsidise much-needed military specific therapy for 18 clients. As a community interest company, Got Your Six UK continues to create connections with local businesses and organisations and is working hard to become more self-sufficient through the sale of branded merchandise, offering talks and workshops, their bank-vault bookshop, and pre-loved shop. These funding streams will provide a steady income going forward to further support the local community, and in particular, those who serve our country.
