Photo North Festival CIC operates an annual photography and visual storytelling festival that promotes social engagement, education, and emerging creative talent. The 2024 edition of the festival took place in April at The Carriageworks in Leeds. During the financial year 2023–2024, the company’s activities benefited the community in the following ways: Approximately 800 visitors, including local residents, students, and photography enthusiasts, attended the festival, engaging with exhibitions, talks, and workshops that encouraged social awareness, creative discussion, and community cohesion. The festival provided direct freelance opportunities for around 20 creative professionals, including photographers, curators, event producers, designers, and technicians, supporting employment within the cultural and freelance sectors. More than 1000 emerging artists and students received valuable professional development through free portfolio reviews, mentoring, and career advice sessions, helping them build confidence and industry connections. The programme featured a diverse range of exhibitions highlighting themes such as migration, identity, and social justice, giving a platform to underrepresented voices and prompting critical public engagement. Educational outreach included partnerships with local colleges and universities, enabling students to gain hands-on experience in curating, installing exhibitions, and running events. Photo North Festival CIC used all sponsorship income to deliver cultural events and exhibitions promoting documentary photography. These activities benefited the community by offering public access to talks, workshops, and visual storytelling, fostering cultural engagement and education.
During the year, we maintained regular informal consultation with our stakeholders, including attendees, partners, sponsors, and community collaborators. Feedback was gathered through in-person conversations at the festival, post-event communications, and social media engagement. This input has informed the planning of future events, programming decisions, and partnership development. Given the small scale of our organisation, this approach remains the most effective and responsive method of engagement.
