Company activities and impact

Shrewsbury Pride had our first event in September 2023. This included: Main stage in Shrewsbury Square on Saturday Pride Parade around Shrewsbury Town centre on Saturday Spoken word & poetry stage at In Good hands Cafe Pride ‘fringe’ events at partner venues such as cafes and pubs The event was attended by 3000 people, a much higher turnout than we originally expected, making the event a big success. Benefits to the community have included: Showcasing local LGBTQIA+ musicians , performers and artists Providing volunteer opportunities for local LGBTQIA+ people Supporting LGBTQIA+ people to feel safer in Shrewsbury Town Centre

Consultation with stakeholders

The companies stakeholders are the local LGBTQIA+ community and our allies. The performers for Shrewsbury Pride mainly come from the local LGBTQIA+ community. We put out a call online via the community social media page and at the regular bi-monthly LGBTQIA+ social nights for performers before the first Shrewsbury Pride so that all who wanted to be involved had the opportunity to be involved. These performers then chose what material to perform at the Pride event. Similarly, our volunteers come from the local LGBTQIA+ community and we recruited them using the same method. After the first Pride event we held a meeting with the volunteers to get feedback about what had gone well and what to improve on for a 2024 event. The key issue to improve on had been communication about the parade/march road closure and we implemented a new system for 2024. After the first Shrewsbury Pride in 2023, we held a consultation event with the LGBTQIA+ community at the bi-monthly social evening to find out what had gone well and what people would like to see in the future. The main take away was to have a smaller stage for performers who were not confident to play the main stage – a second ‘debut’ stage’ was added for Pride 2024.
