Year Ending: 31 August 2024

Company activities and impact

Wild New Forest Guided Tours carries out three main strands of activity in the New Forest National Park, under the banner of Inform, Involve, Inspire: Inform – Ecological survey and monitoring to inform conservation actions by public and private landowners. Involve – A range of educational initiatives, including guided wildlife tours, volunteering and mentoring opportunities, and a young person’s wildlife club. Inspire – Public engagement through an integrated website, blog, and social media channels, as well as illustrated talks for local and regional societies, and contributions to media articles. Our income-generating activities in 2024 included commissioned ecological surveys (on both public and private land), guided wildlife tours, and illustrated talks. Examples of our community benefit activities in 2024 include: We maintain and manage a website, blog, and active social media presence on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Our Wild New Forest Facebook page has grown to nearly 15,000 members, predominantly from the local community. It has developed into one of the largest social media communities in the New Forest National Park, where members can post, comment, and engage. We run a free wildlife club for young people aged 12 - 18, which currently has around 40 members. In 2024, we delivered over 30 events for the club, supporting wildlife learning and field experience. We hosted two residential wildlife camps for young enthusiasts (aged 12–19), based at Cameron’s Cottage, Franchises Lodge (RSPB), offering immersive experiences in wildlife monitoring and conservation. We co-ordinate the New Forest Ringing Group, supporting 12 trainee bird ringers who are working towards full BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) permits. Our directors voluntarily contribute their expertise to a number of wildlife charities. For example, Marcus conducts survey work for the BTO, RSPB, Hampshire Countryside Service, and Forestry England. In collaboration with Forestry England, we undertook a comprehensive survey of Pine Marten distribution across the New Forest National Park. We also provided data across a broad mix of taxa to support habitat management decisions on Crown land. We deliver ecological surveys to private landowners at 50% of our standard commercial rate, where the primary outcome is nature conservation. Our data and advice help landowners make evidence-based decisions to manage and enhance biodiversity on their land. Our work supports on-the-ground interventions to improve biodiversity and climate resilience, such as wetland creation and seasonal cattle grazing. Finally, our social media streams - particularly our Facebook page -serve not only to inform but also to gather community feedback on emerging conservation issues, helping us focus our efforts where they are most relevant.
