Company activities and impact

WeMove Dance provides dance, performance and social empowerment activities to young people who are living in inner London and who are primarily from global majority or disadvantaged communities including those with special educational needs. We run dance and empowerment sessions for young women and girls, facilitated by dance professionals and teachers specialising in critical education and youth activism. Our performance and community-based events have offered the young people the chance to showcase their abilities and achievements with family and friends and the wider community, as well as providing a fun, safe environment for them to express their creativity

Consultation with stakeholders

The company's stakeholders are made up of the following: Young people aged 8-21. We make it a point to include our young people in all discussions around the classes, performances, activities we provide. This is done using written questionnaires, 1-1 discussions, group discussions and asking for feedback and input in choosing topics, music, dance styles, etc. We always encourage our young people to take a more central role in planning, organising, and managing some of the performances planned for the year. Parents/guardians/carers. We give parents/carers a courtesy call to introduce ourselves and to get a feel for what the parent would like for their child. We find it useful to have fairly informal engagement with the parents a this can give us a greater insight into their child and can help if there is a particular issue, or an area where it would be useful for us to be particularly sensitive, that we may not be aware of, otherwise. Schools. All of the projects that we run for schools are bespoke and are designed in collaboration of school staff because we understand that they know their students well. We are in regular contact with school staff during our projects. The staff are invited to sessions and are kept up-to date with pupils' progress. Good relations are forged with schools and staff. Professional dance artists. We have professional dancers/teachers on some of our projects who can model and showcase pathways into the industry for our YP. As is customary for WeMove, we have regular consultations with our teachers and guest teachers to understand the goals and trends of the London dance community and how our work with the young people aligns. As a result, this has served to embed historical and political elements to our classes (especially hip-hop). It also encourages the participants to experiment with music and video production.
