Dyslexia FeelGood Funday CIC or DFGF, as it was more widely known, was a series of online and in-person arts based events for the neurodivergent community of all ages (0 - 65 years+) . There was a focus on dyslexia, but other neurodivergent individuals, families and the neuromajority were also welcome. Seperate to DFGF as a CIC, the main 30K funds to run the year-long project (Aug 23 - Aug 24) was given as a sole trader grant via National Lottery and the Arts Council England, National Lottery Project Grant (NALPG). DFGF was also awarded £500 through Brent Councils Love Where You Live scheme and Anson Primary School, the venue for the main DFGF Funday event raised £378.17 as their chosen organisation with their Schools Break the Rules Day. These were deposited in the CIC business account. There was a sponsored walk which was the first DFGF event and took place in October 2023 raising £383. These were followed in Oct & Dec 2023 with a couple of online Taster sessions to introduce the community to the DFGF Artists and so that the community could see what to expect from us. There was a Taster for under 5s with participatory singing, also music, a story which was BSL signed by the sessions multi-disciplinary facilitator. The other was a spoken word Taster for adults where participants had a chance to here the story of how the neurodivergent Spoken Word Artist came about her talent and craft . The audience got a chance to write their own poems after receiving tips by the accomplished Artist. A member won the competition for the best poem. The main event, the Funday, took place on 9 March 2024 in Anson Primary School, Willesden, NW London 2024 where there were art and craft drop-in sessions as well as arts, drama and salsa dance workshops. The event was also sponsored by Socolo Ltd. -who supplied free gifts of dyslexia friendly notebooks and pencils. And Texthelp.com donated funding for volunteer and staff t-shirts for the Funday. Additional Neurodivergent Volunteer Helpers were graciously on hand to offer signposting, support, advice and tips on living, studying, training and working as a neurodivergent in a neuromajority world. On May 18th there was the online Colour the Music - Comic Book Art workshop session led by an expert comic book art duo and attended by a mixture of ages from primary school children upwards. Prizes were given and participants seemed to really enjoy the session. In the summer of 2024 there was an online opportunity for some of the partners and Artists to meet and create possible collaborations. The final event was added at the last minute as a result of a conversation with the teacher at the school where the Funday had taken place. So this was again held at Anson Primary School and was entitled Inspirational Neurodivergent Artists and Creatives and involved some Artists and volunteers from the Funday event talking and demonstrating their creativity and the influence of their neurodivergences on their career paths to eight classes of children amounting to 216 pupils. The project also included a monthly newsletter and a website www.dyslexiafunday.com Evaluations were done and feedback gained from participants, volunteers and Artists. These revealed that participants felt that they had: -Found their 'tribe'; found others like themselves who they could connect with -People felt understood and seen as their learning differences had been taken into consideration, acknowledged and catered for -Volunteers had engaged with a community with which they had not previously had any connection and so had become aware of the community, requirements and experiences as a result of the training and volunteering at the event -Participants said there was the opportunity to try new arts activities (comic book art, salsa dance, etc.) whilst having fun and gaining confidence All in all 341 people participated in the above events and 2,020 visited the website.
Evaluations and in-person feedback sessions were conducted. Participants, Volunteers and Artists were all asked for their thoughts and suggestions. 107 people attended the in-person Funday Festival in March 2024 of which, on the day, 73 evaluands indicated that they HAD HAD a fun day, 66.67% of those taking part in the additional online survey said they would be extremely interested in attending again in the future. The Taster events and the online Colour the Music event got scores of 80% from the responders who agreed that they had enjoyed attending DFGF events and so had wanted to participate in another one run by us. At the in-person Volunteer Feedback session a lot of useful points were made which will be useful for the delivery of the project in the future i.e. to raise numbers of participants especially at the Funday, the volunteers could promote the project & event to their network i.e. actively get those Volunteers interested in more involvement to create flyers, tik tok videos, ads etc. Feedback and suggestions made by the Artists from the Inspiring Neurodivergent Artists and Creatives were that such a session would benefit from being done over a day/a few hours so that the children could have the opportunity to gain even more useful information from the Artists, ask more questions thus having a greater opportunity to engage.
**As a Director of the CIC I received no direct payment. **However, as a Sole Trader through the funding given by the Arts Council England and National Lottery I received in total £9,975 fee payment which was for my role as Project Lead (planning, organising, managing, facilitating etc. the project ). Also for work done in the design of the website, creation of newsletters & promoting and marketing the events both online and in-person.
No transfer of assets other than for full consideration
