The company’s activities continue to provide benefit to multiple communities and individuals within those communities. The Carbon Literacy training programmes we have developed and delivered to those communities have enabled the organisations to progress their Net Zero strategies by raising awareness, among the individuals within and connected to those communities, of the climate crisis. The learning delivered not only provides general and global awareness, but also sector specific knowledge of the source of carbon emissions within their daily activities and what action can be taken to reduce these emissions. Additionally, we have embarked upon expanding our offering to include other training products, such as Climate Fresk, together with supporting our clients with implementing climate reduction strategies and pledges. By creating sector or industry specific content, with our communities, this has enable practical engagement and motivation to reduce emissions. Within the Carbon Literacy training we provide, participants must make two pledges of new and significant carbon reducing actions they will be taking as a result of attending the course. Within other training courses, participants are supported with development of ‘next steps’. The significance is relative to the position and agency of the learners within those communities. Following completion of the training, we have provided ongoing support to some of the organisations to aid them with implementation of the pledges in support of their net zero commitments. Thus the leaders and decision makers can develop more wide ranging, even strategic pledges, whilst others can make work or home based carbon reduction pledges. By bringing people together in groups, we have enabled cross organisational networking to occur and internal collaboration on emissions reduction which would not have happened without our intervention. These conversations are often cited by individual attendees as one of the most beneficial elements of the service we provide. We also train members of organisations so that they can cascade the climate awareness and Carbon Literacy training internally, thus enabling dissemination of climate knowledge at scale and pace. The communities we have reached within this financial year include organisations in the following sectors (not exhaustively); Local Authorities and County Councils, Arms length public body The Pensions Regulator Social Housing Law firms Tech and digital companies Education including City & Guilds Infrastructure Environmental organisations Voluntary community/charitable organisations.
Our stakeholders fall into three broad groups: 1. The Carbon Literacy Project (CLP) who are the accrediting body for the training which forms the majority of our work 2. The Speak Carbon associate trainers who provide their training services 3. Our clients 1. The CLP. We are in regular contact with the CLP leads on each of the sector courses or toolkits, for updates and discussions on evolving the course materials. We meet with the CLP leadership team 8-weekly, to review updates of both ours and their offerings and work through any development areas together. These meetings are minuteds. We also frequently liaise with their comms dept. and sector leads. 2. Speak Carbon associates. We have an open online meeting with our freelance associates and training partners monthly, where updates and opinions are shared, minuted, acted upon and reviewed in the following month. Last year, we developed an Associate Members agreement in consultation with all member of Speak Carbon Collective. All members are signatories of the agreement, which is reviewed and resigned annually. 3. Our clients. We meet regularly with our clients during the projects, develop materials with them to reflect their organisation’s and sector’s carbon impacts, actions and plans. For Carbon Literacy training, course materials are updated during the project period, in accordance with CLP’s parameters. Individual participants are invited to complete feedback forms on completion of all training. Their comments are reviewed and built into improving future training delivery. We have developed a debrief and feedback process as part of the consultation process for the benefit of both the clients and improving our service/offering. Additionally, we use social media, newsletter and emails to provide prospects and wider publics with updates.
The directors have standard employment contracts and are paid for their professional work for the CIC and not for their services as directors. Their salaries totalled £75,790 for the year.
