2024 started with a group walk which was attended by about 10 people, walking along the canal into Central London. In February we organised a cottage holiday in Snowdonia. It was attended by 12 people taking up residence for a week in a beautiful cottage. Snowdon was conquered and we had fun as we challenged ourselves to various walks and other adventures. March saw us organising another day walk through the flooded fields around the Bluebell Woods around Chenies. Some of the paths were flooded, resulting in us wading through water – it was great fun! At Easter we organised three days of Bushcraft! When we arrived at the site, we discovered that it was partially flooded, so we came home and collected the canoes! In between lighting fires, people were able to canoe through the pine woods. The water was up to about 2 feet deep in places. It was great fun and although wet it added an extra dimension to the Bushcraft Days. The Mayday weekend had us camping at Watlington. It was going to be cancelled, but at the last minute a suggestion was made to advertise the camp in a new forum (our Accountant suggested a Single Parent Facebook Page). The following 2 days were spent in the Office replying to new contacts. As a result, a group of completely new people attended and friendships formed. Over the May Whitson week, we took a very small group to Normandy in France for the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. This had been planned since November 23. It was typical that two weeks before we were due to leave more people were asking if they could come to France - to which we had to reply no due to the campsite being fully booked as well as the ferries. It was a very busy place for the entire summer due to the 80th Anniversary of the D Day landings. We still have an issue with people not committing to a camp until a few weeks before the camp! It was great experiencing the enthusiasm of people re-living what it might have been like during that time with the old vehicles and period costumes. We enjoyed some gastronomical French cooking. In June we organised a camp for a local church which was well attended. It was a lovely time of fellowship and adventure on the River Thames. In July we ran a long weekend camp in Watlington and another in September, even though the nights were getting chilly. All the camps were well attended. During the October Half Term we ran a couple of days of Bushcraft, which was well attended by day visitors, perfecting their fire lighting skills.
During 2024 The Outdoor Group explored different avenues for camping and recruiting people to join and enjoy the great outdoors. After discussion with some of the Stakeholders it was decided that an adventure to France would be fun and to experience Continental Europe. However, only 1 family committed to the experience, but they had a good time. I have found that people are not wanting to commit to holidays until the last minute or are looking for a different type of adventure now that the Covid pandemic is over, which makes it very difficult and frustrating when making plans for future activities. 2024 was another year to analyse and think about the future and where The Outdoor Group should be heading. Having a new forum to advertise in helped to bring fresh blood into the Group and expand the clientele. All the families have returned to the camps or Bushcraft days. On one camp it was mainly friends who attended with only one other family. It was difficult to integrate the 2 factions, so we learnt that if a camp is taken over by people who are all friends, it should become a ‘private’ camp for that group and not a ‘Community’ camp for all. We continue to consult with the Stakeholders to see how we can best serve and adapt to the local communities and Stakeholders. The local Church continues to ask the Outdoor Group to arrange a weekend camp for them and it continues to be well attended. The Cottage Holidays are well attended and this helps to extend our season into the early Spring Months. The places are taken as a little luxury in this season helps the winter to pass.
