Visits Unlimited has gone from strength to strength during the last year thanks to our local commissioned audits and training courses. Our enquiries have increased via the website for training and audits. This has included an enquiry from work with The Art Fund, Kent Museums and a restaurant/hotel in Birmingham. Our local work through the Accessible Calderdale Project has continued to grow and develop largely due to the trust in relationships and networks we have built over the last 7 years. We know that accessibility is the right thing to do and we are taking great steps to ensure our stakeholders have this high on their agendas. Accessibility benefits everyone who works, lives, studies and visits our beautiful region. We have increased our reach to more organisations at strategic level and raised awareness of the needs of our disabled community through a varied programme of activities during 2023/24. This has moral benefit as well as commercial and as a result our work we have a wide range of local access audits commissioned or through grants. We continue to have a seat on the English Inclusive Tourism Action Group. We presented the case for engaging with local people through a powerpoint and the Accessible Calderdale project at the end of 2023. Accessible Calderdale Disability Access Forum (ACDAF) We meet monthly to agrees our priorities. Our members include disabled people with a wide range of impairments and family members/carers. This user led group gives us rich insight into local knowledge and expertise and have a broad range of lived experience. They know what needs to change and what the solutions are to make our area more accessible and inclusive. We have regular sub groups on highly relevant topics. Most popular and proactive are the Countryside and Transport Groups. We work in co-production with local services and businesses, tourism and heritage sector and the local authority. We believe that there are many benefits in engaging with disabled people at the beginning of projects to avoid mistakes further down the line. We are the go-to group in Calderdale, we show the benefits of working in co-production and how this imbeds the voice of disabled people in all new plans for redevelopment programmes. Lived experience is key to successful planning. Our part time staff are crucial to the success of the project. Our engagement worker raises awareness of the project to increase the memberships, supports individual members to make sure that their access needs are met and they feel valued, confident to engage on the issues that are important to them. The engagement worker spends time to make reasonable adjustments so that everyone can be involved equally. Meet and Eat Sessions 2023/24 Community Foundation for Calderdale and Voluntary Action Calderdale grant for 10 Meet and Eat Sessions in Park Ward and North Halifax October 23 to September 24 Harnessing the Power of Communities: To provide regular welcoming, inclusive and relaxing space for disabled people, carers and family members. The aim has been to gain peer support, meet local like-minded people, have a hot meal and to connect with local services. The sessions have supported local people to have a voice on community issues, reduce isolation and loneliness and promoted emotional wellbeing. North Halifax Partnership is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund for Community Disability Awareness from September 2024 is ongoing. This new funding is helping us bring more disabled people together. Our aim is to deliver 10 meet and eat session in the North Halifax area to alleviate isolation and loneliness amongst disabled people; for Chris to complete 3 access audits at venues in North Halifax and for us to deliver 1 Disability Co-creation workshop co-delivered by young people who are neuro-diverse. We are using a wide range of community venues within the heart of North Halifax and inviting local services to join us to share information and resources with those attending. Transport Group Due to no grants being available we no longer have funding to develop this work separately so are including it within our regular ACDAF meetings and it is often highlighted an issue via our other meetings. We continue to have regular contact with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) and feedback any issues and solutions with local transport and the new bus station. Accessible Calderdale and Major Projects Team Partnership ACDAF continues their working relationship with the Major Project team to ensure that there is engagement of local disabled people at planning meetings held quarterly. This is an opportunity to raise awareness, advise and inform the team on the needs of disabled people at the design and regeneration stages whilst offering guidance on the physical and non-physical barriers that local people experience. Changing Places Toilets working with the local authority We attended the launch of the Ogden Reservoir Changing Places toilet together with the Mayor Calderdale. We look forward to seeing the difference this make to people’s lives who wish to share the delights of this beautiful area. Work with CultureDale and the Year of Culture 2024 Jan 2024 to July We held monthly events in Calderdale and used cultural venues including our main Halifax Library to bring together disabled people with local arts organisations and the Year of Culture. This project has been developed to ensure everyone has the opportunity for culture and creativity and for this to be woven into the fabric of their lives. We do this by raising awareness of the barriers and challenges faced by disabled people which prevents them taking part in cultural activities and by working with organisations to improve access to their cultural events and venues. We delivered free training for the new team of volunteers who were recruited to support the Year of Culture launch events, and regular activities throughout the Year of Culture. Accessible Calderdale and Healthwatch Partnership We have been delighted to collaborate with Healthwatch to work towards producing an easy read guide for organisations to support an increase to disabled people accessing voluntary roles in Calderdale. We have spoken to local disabled people about their experiences of volunteering, what barriers they face and what are the best parts about being a volunteer. We have connected with the local voluntary sector to find out about what improvements they can make and what they already do to include local disabled people. We completed a joint report which has been shared widely. Calderdale Council Audits Chris Cammiss has completed 3 access audits with reports to address the Tackling Inequalities in Leisure Standards in Todmorden, Sowerby Bridge and Brighouse. Chris has also been involved with the Brighouse Centre Development, work on Halifax Town Centre, Active Todmorden and Todmorden Market. Chris has completed 7 access audits for the Year of Culture at historic and cultural venues. Calderdale Council – Supporting Stronger Neighbourhoods We began our new piece of work lasting 2 years to establish a new group to improve local services by having a voice to influence local decision making. Our Inclusive Voices group aims to develop confidence and empower local disabled people to learn together the importance of genuine co-production through a series of face to face workshops on participation v consultation. Skills for Care Direct Payment Workshops for Individual Employers We have received national funding to deliver a series of workshops aimed at those receiving social care who employ their own staff. These are delivered face to face and online hosted by our team and led by Liz Leach Murphy from Imagineer. We have a wide range of courses and speakers available We have: Delivered 2 training sessions on Disability Equality and Inclusion for The Year of Culture for new volunteers We have increased our numbers of followers by 201 on our facebook page last year We have 61 members on our Social Care in Calderdale facebook group We have 42 members on our closed ACDAF group. . We would like to give a special thanks to each of the members who have shown resilience and strength to continue to be actively involved. Big thanks to the Visits Unlimited team of Juliana, Katie, Lorraine and Chris.
Visits Unlimited works closely with several key tourism organisations and has a seat on the England Inclusive Tourism Action Group to promote accessibility and inclusion at national level. Regionally, we hold regular Transport meetings with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and consult with our members during Accessible Calderdale Disability Access Forum sessions to gather feedback and information on local bus provision, train transport and the new Halifax bus station. Locally, we have been involved with working alongside North Halifax Partnership and fed into a funding bid through consultation with local disabled people. We were invited to deliver ten Meet and Eat workshops in accessible venues across North Halifax bringing local disabled people together. We involved local services at the meetings to share information and hear from our group first hand their lived experiences. Our work has raised issues around disability that has informed the North Halifax Strategy and we attend locality meetings. Our Cup of Culture project has informed local arts and cultural organisations on disability awareness and ensuring that they are providing accessible and inclusive activities. We have provided a platform for local disabled people to influence the Year of Culture events so disabled people have the same opportunities available as non-disabled people. At each session we provide easy read feedback forms to inform us on what is working, not working and how we can improve our services. We have members who take an active role in the Council led Community Voices meetings, and Calderdale Adult Social Care Transformation meetings. We have worked closely with Active Calderdale, Parks and Greenspaces, Healthy Minds, Hebden Bridge Disability Forum, organisations from the voluntary sector, Imagineer CIC and Adult Social Care. After our access audits we ensure that all organisations receive a full report including recommendations giving them opportunity to share with us their experiences of our audits and to inform us when improvements have been made. We have delivered a range of training courses this year and provide evaluation forms at each session for participants and organisations to feedback and for us to continue to improve our sessions.
