Between May and early October, our community garden project successfully transformed an unused green space in Castle Street car park. 21 gardening sessions were held, each attended by an average of seven volunteers, a third of whom identified as neurodivergent. Up until September our sessions were 3-hours and after that we reduced the time to 2 hours as the jobs were getting less and less. The focus was on creating a beautiful and productive space. Four raised beds were installed at ground level, yielding a surprising harvest of sun-loving crops like courgettes, cherry tomatoes, and rocket, despite the predominantly shady location. While shade-tolerant plants like lettuces and beetroot struggled, the project demonstrated the resilience of certain species. Beds were also constructed at a higher level, but unfortunately, the combination of poor soil quality and persistent slug infestations significantly impacted yields. To improve soil fertility for the following season, green manure has been planted. A key emphasis was on biodiversity. Numerous native bulbs were planted alongside other plants and herbs to support local wildlife. The project also provided a valuable social and learning experience for volunteers. A volunteer survey revealed that social interaction was a primary motivator for participation, alongside the opportunity to acquire new gardening skills. While many enjoyed planting, weeding, and sowing seeds, harvesting proved less popular. Each session fostered a strong sense of community, with volunteers sharing refreshments and contributing tools and seeds. The project also encouraged home gardening, with volunteers taking plants and skills home. Moreover, our social media presence inspired others to grow their own food, as evidenced by messages and shared photos from individuals who had started their own vegetable patches. In conclusion, the project successfully transformed a neglected space into a vibrant community garden, providing valuable social and horticultural experiences while promoting sustainable food practices.
