AIR GALLERY CIC

Directors' report period ended 31 December 2024

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 31 December 2024

Principal activities of the company

AIR Gallery CIC is a not-for-profit contemporary arts organisation dedicated to supporting emerging and early-career artists. The company’s principal activities include curating exhibitions, awarding commissions and solo shows, delivering graduate opportunities, and providing a platform for underrepresented artists to develop and showcase their work. During the financial year, AIR Gallery continued to deliver its core mission without a fixed venue, operating through partnerships with external galleries and cultural spaces. Key activities included major exhibitions such as the AIR Open 2024 at Rogue Studios, solo and group shows for graduate award-winners at venues including Bury Art Museum & Gallery, PINK and GRIT Studios, and distributing over £2,000 in artist prizes. The company also facilitated artist talks and networking events to maintain public engagement and community building within the arts sector.

Company policy on disabled employees

AIR Gallery CIC does not currently employ any staff; the organisation is run by two volunteer directors. However, we do work with volunteers and maintain an inclusive approach to all aspects of our operations. We are committed to equal opportunities and have policies in place to support accessibility and inclusion for disabled individuals. In 2024, we created an accessibility guide for our exhibitions to ensure our events were welcoming and navigable for all audiences. We continue to consider accessibility in our programming and event planning, and will apply inclusive recruitment and support practices if and when we begin employing staff in the future.

Company activities and impact

AIR Gallery CIC has continued to support emerging and early-career artists throughout the year, despite the ongoing challenge of not having a permanent venue since October 2023. We focused our efforts on maintaining and expanding our impact by collaborating with external venues and building new partnerships. We delivered a number of key projects aimed at providing visibility, experience, and opportunities to underrepresented artists. This included a solo exhibition by student graduate award-winner Rakaya Cohen at Bury Art Museum & Gallery, with a follow-up immersive digital show planned at PINK in Stockport. We also supported Jasmine Bevan, another student awardee, in producing a mural and exhibition at GRIT Studios, contributing to the development of a new gallery space in the area. Our flagship exhibition, the AIR Open 2024, was held at Rogue Studios and was our largest show to date, receiving over 1,400 submissions and showcasing twice the usual number of artists. This high-profile exhibition provided a platform for 45+ artists from diverse backgrounds, distributing over £2,000 in prizes and introducing a new ‘Judges’ Choice’ award, which will support two further exhibitions in 2025. The event saw high footfall and strong public engagement, contributing to the local cultural offer and offering valuable exposure to the artists involved. Some artists also gained voluntary experience through the event, helping them to develop their CVs and professional practice. While the lack of a permanent space limited our ability to offer workshops or placements this year, we maintained community engagement through artist talks, performance pieces, and informal networking opportunities. Our activities have supported artist development, built new institutional connections, and helped sustain the local creative ecosystem at a grassroots level.

Consultation with stakeholders

Yes, AIR Gallery CIC has consulted with its key stakeholders over the financial year. Our primary stakeholders are the emerging and early-career artists we support, along with our wider online audience and community of supporters. We carried out consultation through several methods, including online feedback forms inviting reflections on our previous seven years of programming, which helped us understand what aspects of our work have been most valued. We also engaged in verbal discussions with artists and audiences during events, and informally gathered feedback at exhibitions and openings. This feedback informed our planning, including the decision to expand our programme into external venues and increase the number of artists featured in our flagship AIR Open exhibition. It also confirmed the importance of maintaining opportunities such as awards, solo shows, and visibility for recent graduates - all of which we continued to prioritise despite operational challenges. We remain committed to ongoing consultation and aim to strengthen this further as we secure a new venue and expand our activity.
