The company runs a support system for families who have been admitted to neonatal units across the southwest. The CIC opened in August 2022 and during the financial year of 23/24 the company has benefited the community in the following ways. - Provided free care packs for parents to support mental health and wellbeing whilst admitted to the neonatal unit. Packs include essential items needed to navigate their time on the unit. - Provided a free parent pantry in the hospitals neonatal unit for families to access healthy meals and refreshments free of charge, limiting the financial pressures that hospital stays incur. Its provided a safe space for parents to take a well needed break away from the unit to ensure they are looking after their health and wellbeing to be able to be their babies advocate. - Facilitated free coffee mornings and stay & play groups at soft plays for families and babies who were born poorly or premature after discharge from neonatal units. Creating a well needed support network and free access of medical advice when unable to see DR’s or consultants. - Supplied more than 500 free premature baby grows to struggling families in swindon, more than 5000 in wiltshire. - Supplied free medical premature equipment such as premature dummies, breastfeeding supplies and more that fall outside of the NHS remit. - Provided 350 free emergency maternity packs to new mothers to help aid postpartum recover in the event of a premature birth (birth before 37 weeks) In the second financial year the company delivered more than 700 NICU care packs, 100 Christmas gifts bags, 50 Mothers Day care packs and 50 Fathers Day care packs, 65 Easter bags, supported more than 1000 families and delivered more than 10 coffee morning sessions. - The company has also supported A&E with donations to support families with premature babies.
Our stakeholders are families who are admitted to neonatal units with poorly or premature babies and the staff (nurses, admin and DR’s) who support these families. The director of the company has lived in the local area that the company supports and been through a neonatal experience herself so understands what was missing and what was needed. NHS staff are send monthly emails with our upcoming donations and activities to ensure these are in line with what is required and falls outside of the NHS remit. Parents who benefit from our services are sent questionnaires and feedback request to score how useful these activities are and what they feel might be missing. This helps build a picture of an ever-changing environment. This feedback has allowed us to understand that more than 60% of mothers on the unit often forgo eating due to financial challenges or being unable to take long breaks from the neonatal unit. More than 30% of mothers gave up breastfeeding due to a lack of equipment such as pumps, shields and bags allowing us to focus donations around these areas to create a more supportive system.
