Company activities and impact

The company has been running a more permanent space for putting on exhibitions and supporting artists which is privately funded. In this last year, exhibitions average 2 per month giving artists the chance to have their first solo shows, to experiment with showing different works that traditionally aren’t sold in the art market (video work and performance) and to provide artists with free studio and workshop space to work on ideas. As the space isn’t concerned with commercial activities, artists aren’t under pressure to make work that sells. The company has worked with a range of artists, including an international exhibition of work from Libya, work by artists who might be considered minorities due to their ethnicity, (dis)ability or mental health and work by emerging artists and those who struggle with low income and homelessness. Having the opportunity to experiment with work outside of the traditional market has allowed artists to develop their skills, explore new avenues for working and make important connections with other local artists. Exhibiting work in a professionally curated space not only gives artists a focus for their work but for those audiences who share similar lived experiences of marginalisation and inequality, the project is aspirational, representative and will encourage them to become part of the wider arts community themselves. Ongoing research has indicated a range of secondary benefits from engaging in arts activities including a positive effect on self-esteem, health and wellbeing; as well as supporting social development and providing professional networking opportunities.
