MAD LEAP CIC continued to deliver a project, scaling its circular food model SOURCE, in East London across three sites. The mushroom farm was further developed next to a social housing estate and two polytunnels were erected at Gainsborough Primary School, housing a hydroponic system and raised beds. An outdoor edible playground was also installed for educational activities, linking our sustainable food growing and waste management activities on-site with the curriculum. The educational programme was successfully delivered across several classes and after-school clubs. The aim is to establish an economically sustainable model that can be replicated across, not only schools but other sites such as social housing, new developments etc. where social, environmental, educational and economic benefits can be realized. MAD LEAP continued to deliver a range of green skills training (hydroponics, sustainable gardening and mushroom growing) and hosted site visits to council officers and university groups (including University of Louisiana).
We have continued to engage with various stakeholders to deliver the circular food project including: The had teacher and school staff via regular meetings and requests for feedback; School kitchen staff through inset day activities and demonstrations of food waste recycling; Parents via questionnaire and attendance at parents evenings where we distributed flyers and explained the circular food model in more detail, In addition, we have engaged local residents via green skills training and requests for feedback. We are designing engagement activities at the social housing estate to include flyering, a questionnaire, door knocking, community events and more accredited green skills training. We have also consulted with another primary school and community centre to install a rooftop polytunnel with hydroponics, which will grow food for school meals and a nearby community food coop.
