Fat Lady Opera CIC aims to provide inclusive and accessible opera, theatre and music projects to local communities across Kent and the South East. During our fourth year of trading and despite the ongoing impact on community activities due to the cost of living crises, pressure on statutory funds and rising cost of trading, this ambition was achieved through the following projects and programmes: LIGHT This was a large-scale 6 month partnership programme of music and arts creative workshops that explored notions of Light and Hope. It worked with people of all ages and predominantly with those living in deprived areas of Folkestone and the surrounding towns. The participants were made up of people from different age groups and included people with visual impairment, neural impairment, mobility challenges and long term health conditions. The project also sought to support artist practice and prosper skills exchange opportunities. The result was a large-scale performance at Folkestone Leas Cliff Hall called LIGHT PROMENADE, and a GLOW PICNIC family day event at Folkestone Amphitheatre plus series of short performances that were free to the public. A partnership project co-developed with MASC Charity, Folkestone Community Players and Strange Cargo supported by Arts Council, and local ward grants. RiverVoice. In 2022 Fat Lady Opera began work with a struggling choir to provide family centred singing and accessible music-making impact. As a result older people and their families, mostly from Medway, have been learning good vocal health, joining together in singing, gaining confidence, keeping active and spending time with primary-aged children and wider family units. This year RV members have had the opportunity to take part in the huge spectacular theatre and music event GHOST SHIPS at Chatham Historic Dockyard. The choir have also had opportunity to perform outside of Medway at the Kent-wide Choiroke, Beacon Memorial Service and Safe Harbour concert in Hythe. RiverVoice operates in long term partnership with Icon Theatre, St Augustine’s Church; Byron Primary School; Warren Wood Primary and St Stephen’s Church. Performing Arts Engagement. FLO have been developing wider partnership activities that relieve our small company from all the burden of securing funding. Impact: As a result we have taken over 150 people to watch performances in London for free as part of the English National Opera Engage programme - this includes people who have never seen an opera before, people who are disabled, people who are managing long term physical or mental health conditions. Partners: ENO and Shepway Voices. Water’s Edge: This is a longterm programme of opera and classical vocal engagement activities that introduce people to unfamiliar music and engage them in the process of making work and singing. This year we have hosted 8 open workshops and this work continues to drive interest in opera and open access. Impact: People increased in vocal confidence and uplift in people’s mood as they became engrossed in forensic opera exploration and creation. Partners/Funders: Medway and Swale Health Care Partnership, Kent Community Foundation.
Fat Lady Opera undertakes ongoing consultation, evaluation and reflection on the impact and reach of our work with all our stakeholders. We aim to provide benefit to and consult with: Communities and individuals who might otherwise not have access to opera and live music and theatre. See PERFORMING ARTS ENGAGEMENT above. Artists at different stages of their career who are interested in creating new work, both with and for communities who might not have experience or easy access to contemporary arts practice. See the LIGHT project outlined above. Professional and non-professional groups who would like more access to relevant, meaningful and engaging opera. See WATER’S EDGE project outlined above. Disabled and marginalised groups who are interested in pursuing their creative practice through the medium of opera. See RIVERVOICE and LIGHT project outlined above. In response to these aims we regularly incorporate consultation processes with participants, artists and stakeholders. Many of the FLO led projects listed above employed an early collaborative approach with participants that informed the development of each project and continues to inform our work. All projects also incorporate a final evaluation with all stakeholders including partners, participants and artists that informs the planning for all current and future projects. Evaluation and Impact reports are available for all the above projects compiled by FLO, and are available to any stakeholders for viewing. The consultation with communities this year has indicated that people benefit from and have found the projects a crucial platform for increasing their confidence in social spaces outside of home. Participant evaluations indicate that people would like our projects to be a permanent part of their lives, but that the rising cost of living and travel makes it difficult for people to make any large donations to the company and sometimes even small membership fees are hard for people. Meantime funding for the Arts continues to face cuts. Until both the funding challenge and the project-based funding landscape for the arts changes, we are unlikely to be able to offer yearround programmes of work and extend our own company officer capacity. A selection of quotes and feedback is outlined below: From LIGHT participants That was the most incredible day in so many ways. It was an absolute privilege to be involved in the Light - thank you I had the pleasure of attending the Light Promenade last night. I particularly enjoyed "Indefinite number", the surround sound created was magical, thank you. From RiverVoice participants The choir is my bit of sanity in the week. It’s always a lovely way to spend a morning - like a big family. Can’t believe that we managed to learn the Ghost Ships music. What an achievement. It was so hard, but we did it. From Performing Arts Engagement participants We had a wonderful time watching the opera and learning about it beforehand. Getting to see La Boheme was brilliant. So moving. Thank you
Artistic Director’s fees totalling £16,808 were paid to the Director, Mrs TM Holland, in the period of which £14,808 relates to the delivery of specific projects with restricted budget funds, and £2,000 relates to more generalised Artistic Director activities. There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director’s loss of office, which require to be disclosed.
No transfer of assets other than for full consideration
