COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

ILLUMINATE FREEDOM HEALTH AND WELL-BEING CIC

Company Number: 14247932 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 July 2024

Company activities and impact

Illuminate Freedom Health and Well-Being CIC aimed to support, educate and empower people with sight loss by delivering health and well-being related projects that improved people’s health and mobility, reduced pain and provided support to increase people’s confidence, improve mental health and reduce fears around social isolation. Our work brings in a range of specialist accessible “VI” (Visually Impaired) dance, gentle movement and fitness sessions, social activities and audio description services to inactive and active groups of blind and visually impaired people, sight loss organisations and arts organisations across London and parts of the United Kingdom. Throughout the financial year, we restructured our project delivery and worked closely with seven clients through our One-to-One VI Exercise and Lifestyle Programmes. We delivered five signature VI Zumba sessions, four of them online and one of them for the London Borough of Barnet Council, created and delivered eight Audio Description transcripts for dance performances at venues across London and the United Kingdom, and delivered activities for a VI Sports Day. Through our Lifestyle Programmes, we have been helping blind and visually impaired people across London to increase their confidence levels, manage anxiety and supporting their ability to leave the house, visit local shops and manage overwhelming tasks. Our Exercise Programmes have been helping people to improve their balance and coordination, reduce painful muscles and joints and walk around for longer without tiring. Overall, our Programmes have been supporting and empowering people with sight loss to improve their overall health, fitness and mental well-being. Work during this financial period has been conducive to strengthened empathetic relationships with inactive and under-represented groups of people and has supported successful participation in sport and physical activity and within society. The interactive and social element of our work has encouraged participant engagement in a way that has helped to build self-esteem, lessen feelings of isolation, build confidence and enable and promote the development of friendships and peer support. Within the arts, our audio-description services have not only improved accessibility for audiences with sight loss but has also encouraged artistic companies to consider blind and visually impaired audiences when devising performance pieces.

Consultation with stakeholders

Illuminate Freedom Health and Well-Being CIC’s stakeholders are blind and visually impaired individuals from across London and parts of the United Kingdom, sight loss organisations and performing arts organisations that we have either creatively collaborated with and/or provided Audio Description services to. The above stakeholders have been consulted via online pilot group meetings prior to the delivery of our projects, including one to one conversations in-person and via the telephone. We have also received written feedback and suggestions from stakeholders that have participated in our delivered projects and from organisations that have worked alongside Illuminate Freedom Health and Well-Being CIC. Action in response to feedback from consultations has resulted in the delivery of online projects to enable us to reach more people across London and parts of the United Kingdom. We have also streamlined our services to ensure financial viability for the company whilst simultaneously meeting the needs of the sight loss community.
