LOVE Food CIC is a community-based organisation dedicated to increasing access to, and promoting the benefits of Local, Organic, Vegan, Ethical food for animals, health and the environment. We organise food activities to: bring the local community together, help people eat better, address food poverty, reduce food waste. All of LOVE Food CIC's activities focus on healthy, easy, affordable, tasty vegan food. Eating plant-based not only offers a wide range of health benefits, but can also help the environment and reduce our carbon footprint. In the last year from November 2023 - October 2004 we continued to run all our activities including St Thomas community fridge, lunch clubs, cooking sessions, foraging walks, apple juicing project, and other food and community activities. Due to St Thomas Library having to leave their premises, we had to move our community fridge temporarily to St Thomas Parish Church. After that we decided to try to take on our own premises, so that we wouldn’t have to keep moving the fridge, and so we could run all our activities from a single space. We organised a crowdfunding campaign and on 20 February 2024 we successfully raised £15,361 with 149 supporters. In April, we were awarded Lottery Awards for All funding and have also received many other grants totalling about £53,000 in the last year. We got the keys to the premises in May and started running activities in July. Since starting activities in July 2024 and opening fully in September 2024, our community food hub has blossomed into a wonderfully well used space and we have started new activities including a Swap Shop with free toys, books, clothes; arts & craft sessions; coffee mornings; pop up meals, and other food initiatives and special events. All of our activities use surplus food, which would otherwise go to waste, and we get food from FareShare South West, Exeter Food Action and Olio. We also get fruit and veg from local producers and community growing projects including Shillingford Organics, Devon Dig & Donate, Zero Mile Gardens and gardeners and allotment holders. Some of the cooking sessions we have run over the last year, both before and after we set up the food hub, include: - Cook & Eat sessions making Soup and Flatbreads and Curry - Vegan Ethiopian Masterclass - Christmas plant-based cooking in Topsham - Budget cooking sessions at Exwick Community Centre - Walk & Cook sessions - Cooking with pulses - Energy saving cooking using air fryers and slow cookers - Zero Waste Mexican cooking - Chutney making We have also run events with Exeter Phoenix and the RAMM. Altogether over the last year, we have run over 35 cooking sessions and lunch clubs, and have benefitted around 500 people.
We carried out an online survey before setting up St Thomas Community Food Hub and had 67 responses. 78% said they were likely or very likely to visit the food hub. The activities that were most popular were the community fridge, pay what you can lunch clubs, cooking sessions and pop up meals. We ask people who attend cooking sessions and other events at the food hub to fill in feedback forms and to make suggestions about our activities that they would like us to run. We also consult with stakeholders on a regular basis through social media, and in-person at our lunch clubs, coffee morning, and other events.
The directors’ remuneration for the year was as follows: 2024 - £16,479 Remuneration reflects payment for operational roles carried out by directors, such as project management and running cooking sessions.
