Thirdspace Theatre runs weekly drama workshops for over 240 young people across Brighton, Hove, and Lewes. Our 16 clubs operate in 9 locations and serve children and young people aged 5 - 25. Four of our clubs are completely free to attend and all our clubs offer free and subsidised prices. We continue to work with referrals from organisations such as Social Services, Youth Clubs and Charities. We have also developed relationships with young people from diverse backgrounds through workshops in Schools (St Joseph’s, Brighton Aldridge Community Academy, Varndean, and Kings School Hove). In addition to our term-time classes, we run holiday courses for the Winter and Summer holidays. These have been very successful, and we have welcomed support from Brighton & Hove City Council through the Holiday Activities and Food fund. This programme has helped us reach more children & Young People who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford drama classes. During the 3 holiday courses run in partnership with HAF in this period, we were able to offer 60 young people free places, providing approximately 1,440 hours of free training. 40% of our community are from low-income backgrounds and attend our clubs free of charge. Our free clubs run weekly in Whitehawk, Hollingdean, Tarner and Hangleton. These are all recognised as areas of multiple deprivation. Commissions Leonardslee Illuminated: Our 16-25 year-olds received paid work performing outdoors in November and December 2023. They performed to audiences nightly as characters on an illuminated trail. The company was paid by Leonardslee Illuminated to deliver this commission. Letters Home: Funded by the Fonthill Foundation, two young actors had the paid opportunity to dramatise the poem Letters Home by Dulani Kulasinghe about the journey of two soldiers from the Caribbean who travelled to Sussex in the First World War - this production toured local schools and was performed to secondary school students who took part in a question and answer session and a creative writing session. This piece was also performed at the Anti-Racist Educators Conference. Earth Teeth at ACCA: This show was developed with writer Sarah Leaver and performed at Attenborough Centre for The Creative Arts by a cast of 16-23 year olds. They had the experience of performing on a professional stage to a public audience. The themes centred around environmentalism and community. A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Rose Hill: Young people aged 12-16 took part in this Shakespeare Production in the unusual site of a music venue, they had the opportunity to perform to the public with a professional crew assisting them. Kite Tales at BOAT: Over 100 young people aged 5- 12 performed at Brighton Open Air Theatre for a full audience. The production Kite Tales was scripted from their research and feelings about Kites. Many young performers were from our free of charge drama clubs. Missing Pieces Christmas show: A review night at the Windmill Theatre where over 200 young people performed their own work from the stimuli missing pieces. 2 shows on one day from age 5- 25. The show was almost sold out and many young participants taking part were from our free clubs and free places. Mentoring: TST have begun to formalise our mentoring programme offering ‘in kind’ and paid work opportunities to young people as well as assistance with preparations for further and higher education. Our eldest group are offered to attend training free of charge in exchange for work experience opportunities which have the capacity to lead to paid work. We have four young people who work regularly for us in a paid capacity and we offer them mentoring, support and training in their work with us. Paid Work for Young People: In the 23-24 period we offered over 20 young people paid work and mentoring. We have also assisted some young people into having representation as actors and this has led to paid work for them. Funding: In order to deliver our programme we have successfully received funding from The National Lottery Awards For All, The Postcode Society Trust, Arts Council England, Fonthill Foundation, Chalk Cliff Trust, The Pebble Trust, Unltd, Sussex Community Foundation, ASDA, Brighton and Hove City Council (HAF funding, Youth-Led Grants, and the Estate Development Fund).
Our key stakeholders are our young actors and their families. They are consulted on an ongoing basis through informal means such as face to face meetings and emails during the term. We also ask for termly and yearly feedback through online surveys to ensure we gather their feedback and suggestions. Northbrook College in Goring by Sea is also a stakeholder as we work with them to nurture older teenagers over 16 years. Brighton Dome and Festival is a key stakeholder as ThirdSpace Theatre is one of their three associate companies which include Brighton People's Theatre and one other local organisation. Following all productions we hold feedback sessions for the entire company. The information gathered from them has been directly fed into our organisational strategy and plans for future performances. Our teaching staff are invited to regular staff meetings in person and online as well as annual training and sharing sessions. The artistic director and company manager are in weekly contact with teaching staff during termtime and they choose the work they want to make within their clubs. THe diredtors of Thirdspace Theatre CIC are actively involved in the management of the organisation including offering support with recruitment and creative engagement. We work closely with our venue partners to ensure all our clubs are safe secure and provide the best training opportunities possible. We proactively work with venues particularly community spaces and schools to help us reach members of their community who might not be aware of our offer.
During the period, Ms Tania Gill provided professional and managerial services to the company receiving total remuneration of £26,757.
