During the financial year, Mamas Bristol CIC continued to advance its mission of supporting families and promoting sustainability across Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Originating from a grassroots online initiative, the organisation has evolved into a comprehensive support network that now serves over 41,000 families. Its activities are designed to alleviate hardship, foster community connection, and contribute to environmental responsibility. One of the central areas of activity during the year was the continuation and expansion of the Swaps and Freebies platform, hosted through the company’s online community. This initiative facilitated more than 59,000 individual exchanges of goods, equating to an estimated financial saving of 5.26 million for families. This not only supported low-income households by reducing their cost of living but also significantly reduced domestic waste by encouraging the reuse of items. In parallel, Mamas Bristol delivered a large-scale surplus food and essentials redistribution programme. Partnering with major retailers including M&S, Aldi, and Sainsbury’s, the organisation collected surplus stock and redistributed it to those in need. Over the year, this programme provided approximately 485,850 meals and over nine tonnes of non-food items to 380 families. In doing so, it is estimated that 769 tonnes of carbon emissions were prevented, highlighting the company’s dual commitment to both community welfare and environmental sustainability. The company also operated the Mamas Hub, delivering a range of accessible and inclusive stay-and-play sessions for children and families. These events provided a safe and welcoming environment for social interaction, including tailored support for children with special educational needs. By offering free or low-cost community engagement opportunities, these sessions helped to reduce social isolation and improve wellbeing among parents and children alike. We have provided initiatives supporting families with access to advice, resources, and development workshops aimed at improving self-esteem, knowledge, and practical life skills. It played an important role in promoting inclusion, confidence, and a sense of community belonging. The cumulative impact of Mamas Bristol’s activities during this financial year has been recognised both by beneficiaries and the wider public. The organisation was honoured with a BBC Community Award in early 2024, acknowledging its outstanding contribution to social welfare and grassroots support and Voscurs Social Impact award. Through these initiatives, Mamas Bristol CIC has delivered measurable and meaningful benefits to the community, remaining firmly aligned with its core social objectives and commitment to public good.
Mamas Bristol CIC recognises a diverse range of stakeholders, including the families and individuals who use its services, local community groups, volunteers, local authorities, partner charities, and corporate donors. Each of these stakeholder groups plays an essential role in shaping and sustaining the company’s operations and impact. Stakeholder consultation has remained a central element of the company’s governance and development approach throughout the year. Feedback has been actively gathered through a combination of digital engagement via the company’s Facebook platform, in-person discussions at community events and stay-and-play sessions, as well as targeted surveys and informal feedback loops at the Mamas Hub. In particular, feedback from families has influenced the expansion and refinement of the surplus food redistribution service, with community members identifying increased demand for household essentials, healthy and diverse food options. In response, the company increased its collection frequency from partner retailers and strengthened its network of distribution volunteers. Additionally, several families voiced the need for discreet support, leading to the introduction of a confidential help service, allowing vulnerable individuals to request assistance privately and without stigma. Consultation with volunteers and partner organisations has also led to operational improvements, such as the implementation of a structured volunteer rota system and enhanced safeguarding protocols for sessions involving children. Feedback from stakeholders with lived experience of hardship further informed the design of a multitude of intiatives, ensuring that its workshops and support sessions remained accessible, practical, and responsive to real-world challenges. These consultations have reinforced the company’s commitment to being a responsive, community-led organisation. Mamas Bristol CIC continues to embed stakeholder feedback into its strategic planning, with the aim of deepening its impact and ensuring that all initiatives are designed with, and for, the communities it serves.
