COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

THE BLACKETT LAB FAMILY C.I.C.

Company Number: 13587614 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 August 2024

Company activities and impact

During the year ending 31 August 2024, the Blackett Lab Family C.I.C. (BLF) continued its activity to promote the representation and percentage of Black, UK-based individuals in physics. Following the success of the Representing Physics programme in August 2023, we carried out an expanded version of the programme in August 2024 for a new cohort of year 12 students. Similar to last year's programme, these students enjoyed a powerful experience of physics within world-renowned institutions at Imperial College London, the National Physical Laboratory, and Institute of Physics. Furthermore, we included an online element in this year's programme in order to reach a greater number of attendees. Both the in-person and online components were very well received by the students - the students filled out questionnaires before and after the programme which we used to measure the impact of the programme. We believe that the success of the programme lies in connecting the students with Black physicists and giving them the platform to share information, experience and advice which resonates with the students, and also in bringing students into welcoming environments where science is conducted so that they can have positive, formative experiences. Secondly, we had the opportunity to share our experience of increasing diversity in physics at a seminar hosted by the University of Dundee which focused on this subject. We also met with senior members of the Universities leadership team to advise on how they can support culture change within their organisation. Finally, we continued to provide networking opportunities for our members. In September 2023 and March 2024, we organised more ‘BLF Connect’ events which brought together Black physics enthusiasts at different points in their career journeys - from undergraduates to lecturers - which attendees found enjoyable and useful.
