Company activities and impact

In the space provided below, please insert a general account of the company’s activities in the financial year to which the report relates, including a description of how they have benefited the community: The company’s activities have provided benefit to hundreds of residents in the London Borough of Newham, in the locality of Custom House and Canning Town, by developing residents’ skills, capacity, relationships, and access to resources in such a way that they are better able to identify and help meet their needs and collectively address core issues which their community faces. Safer, secure homes for everyone in the community We hold Newham Council to account for the delivery of a promised refurbishment scheme and general repairs to homes in the area. The refurbishment scheme saw hundreds of homes have new bathrooms and kitchens and damp and mould issues addressed. We monitored the progress of the programme and escalated any issues that residents had so that they were resolved efficiently: this work saw us supporting a plethora of different residents and families over the course of the year. As well as assisting residents with collective action on repairs, bidding issues, and organising members solidarity, our fight to support members and residents to secure the long-term permanent homes they need has remained constant throughout this financial year. Creating community spaces Our long term goal is for PEACH to run a community space. We’ve explored a number of options over the years and most recently, in collaboration with E16 CLT, the old youth centre building on Fords Park Road has become a potential site. To start this project, we conducted a listening campaign to find out what the community would like from a new community centre. Since then, we have worked closely with E16 CLT on a detailed plan to bring this space into use for the community with formal proposals being submitted later in 2025. Following consultation with the community, it was agreed that PEACH would work together with young members of our community to design and build a community garden with this work being delivered by Build Up and funded by the National Lottery and the Postcode Lottery. This work will be continuing from Spring 2025 with the Garden due to open in the summer of 2025. Supporting smaller local organisations We supported Custom House Workers Coop and E16 Community Land Trust – both organisations were set up with the support of PEACH – to continue operating in the community. We did this through meetings with each organisation, where we explored solutions to organisational and strategic challenges. Training & Community Engagement Throughout the course of the year, we held a number of training days for members of the local community to develop their organising and leadership skills. This was supported by expert coaching from our staff and regular opportunities to practice and develop skills further. In January 2025, Shelter conducted a well-attended session educating members of the community about their housing rights. We look forward to continuing this work in the next financial year.

Consultation with stakeholders

Throughout 2024/25 we have held meetings open to the whole community, where we make decisions and plans and we have engaged in door knocking in the local community. During door knocking sessions, we have asked people what they care about and what issues affect them, as well as sharing information on how to get involved with PEACH. We currently have relationships with approximately 200 households. We review our priorities annually to ensure that these are reflective of the community we serve. We work closely with Newham Citizens, London Renters Union – Newham branch and E16 Community Land Trust, Ascension Church Centre and River Christian Centre. Through these relationships we have learned more about the wider community and their priorities.
