The Book Whisperers CIC has continued its mission throughout the financial year October 2023 to September 2024 to support, encourage, and empower writers within our community, particularly those whose voices are often underrepresented. Our activities this year have focused on fostering a supportive writing environment, promoting literacy, and enabling individuals to share their personal and creative stories through publication. We introduced and now run two regular monthly online meetings for our members - BIG VOICES, a session for authors to discuss marketing and promotion of their books, and WRITERS SURGERY, a drop-in session where members can ask questions about writing and publishing. These meetings are informal yet highly impactful, providing an accessible and supportive space for writers of all backgrounds to seek advice, gain insight from peers, and develop confidence in their work. Over the year, The Book Whisperers CIC has supported approximately 50 individuals to publish their books. A significant portion of this work has been with adult survivors of childhood abuse in care, in collaboration with a partner organisation. Through guided writing and publication support, these survivors have used storytelling as a means of healing and empowerment. By helping them share their experiences through published work, we have not only supported their personal growth but also contributed to wider public understanding of their stories. We have also updated and enhanced our online community platform to make it easier for users to navigate our services and access relevant support. The updated site includes new resources and articles designed to help both emerging and experienced writers improve their craft, find their voice, and feel more confident in sharing their work. Additionally, we have developed partnerships with like-minded organisations, such as the Secret Book Swap, to broaden the impact of our community work. These collaborations have allowed us to promote literacy and reading enjoyment, while giving writers in our network the opportunity to present their work to live audiences and connect directly with readers. Throughout the year, The Book Whisperers CIC has remained committed to using the written word as a tool for community engagement, personal development, and social change. Our efforts have provided ongoing encouragement, professional development opportunities, and vital emotional support to those we serve.
The stakeholders of The Book Whisperers CIC can include but are not limited to: 1. Local community members and visitors 2. Local and international writers and authors 3. Participants in the community projects and events organised by the company 4. Schools and community groups that work with the company 5. Staff, contractors and volunteers of the company 6. Funders who support the company's activities The Book Whisperers CIC has consulted its stakeholders in various ways throughout the financial year. For example, the company holds two member meetings per month on Zoom which all subscription members are invited to. This is predominantly to discuss Writing and Marketing their books, but also for members to engage with us and each other. We also invite guests to these events on occasion to discuss any issues that affect our membership. During the year we also had an in person team meeting held over a lunch which brought together staff and contractors to discuss the direction of our business and how we might best serve our clients, members, community and other stakeholders. These events provided a platform for members of the local community to engage with the company and offer feedback on its activities. The Book Whisperers CIC has also engaged with local writers and authors through its online community platform, Facebook page, and the publication of their books. These channels have provided opportunities for writers to give feedback to the company and engage with its activities. In addition, the company has worked with organisations and community groups to deliver projects and events that meet their needs and preferences. Through these collaborations, the company has received feedback from participants and stakeholders that have helped shape its activities. In response to feedback received from its consultations, The Book Whisperers CIC has taken several actions. For example, the company has continued to develop its online community platform to better serve the needs of writers and authors both locally and internationally – bringing together people within the publishing industry (such as illustrators and editors) into one place where they can help and support each other. The company has also used feedback from participants in its community projects and events to make improvements to its programs. Overall, The Book Whisperers CIC values the input and feedback of its stakeholders and strives to engage with them in a meaningful way.
