Woodingdean Food CIC runs the local Social Supermarket, taking over from the unincorporated venture that has run since 2021. We help the residents of Woodingdean and its surroundings who are suffering from hunger, poverty or loneliness, in the following ways: Raising funds from grants, contributions from clients and donations from businesses and residents allowing us to provide subsidised food to all who need it. We average around 30+ clients a week, though not that same clients every week, with an average of more than 2.5 persons per household. This includes pensioners, disabled, ethnic minorities, and many children. For £3.50, (raised to £4.50 in 2025), we provide enough food for a family of four for around four days. Over a year we feed around 400 individuals. We offer free coffee and tea to clients and visitors alike, creating a warm and welcoming environment for them to meet with us and engage with others in our community. We host our local Social Prescriber on a monthly basis, and have managed to help those in need by connecting them with other individuals who can help them locally and signposting to local authority services that are available to help them. We also arrange visits from advisory service, e.g. for energy usage and budgeting. We act as the manager of the funds in the “Household support fund” that is allocated to our area, and have helped in setting up a system to assist those most in need with food vouchers, energy bills, and warm blankets for the winter.
We consider our stakeholders to be our clients, our volunteers and other residents of the village (through the Community Association). We maintain an open dialogue with our clients and change our offering based upon their needs and wishes, as cost permits. We have been asked to provide gluten free foods and culturally appropriate foods for our residents. We also provide recipes and associated ingredients, being open to suggestions as to what they prefer to receive. This dialogue also extends to their ability to approach for funding in times of need and we have been able to respond by distributing energy and food vouchers to those most in need. We have made several changes to the method of distribution in response to feedback. We meet with our volunteers regularly, outside of our opening hours and have adjusted the logistics and people management arrangements at our hub to enable us to manage the flow of people and cut down waiting times. We are regularly represented at our quarterly Community Association meetings and receive support and guidance from residents as well as local schools and churches. We are now a well-integrated and necessary part of our community
