  • 1. Accounting policies

    Basis of measurement and preparation

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions of Section 1A (Small Entities) of Financial Reporting Standard 102

    Turnover policy

Turnover is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable, net of discounts and value added taxes. Turnover includes revenue earned from the the rendering of services.

    Tangible fixed assets depreciation policy

All fixed assets are initially recorded at cost. Property, plant and equipment is used in the company's principal activity for the production and supply of goods or for administrative purposes and is stated in the balance sheet under the historic cost model. This model requires the assets to be stated at cost less amounts in respect of depreciation and less any accumulated impairment losses. Depreciation is calculated so as to write off the cost of an asset, less its estimated residual value (which is the expected amount that would currently be obtained from disposal of an asset, after deducting the estimated costs of disposal, if the asset were already of the age and in the condition expected at the end of its useful life), over the useful economic life of the respective asset as follows: Office Equipment (straight-line) 3 years

Company activities and impact

Mums for Lungs continues to raise awareness of air pollution through different channels targeted at different audiences on different topics – from community stalls to school assemblies, environment conferences and media, we try to speak to everyone we can – because we are all impacted by air pollution and we can all reduce our contributions. We speak in media and have active accounts and groups on different social media channels. We support school communities in achieving cleaner air, by providing support on campaigning locally for School Streets and by raising the awareness and profile of School Streets (restrictions on road transport on roads by schools during drop-off and pick-up times) more broadly through engagement with local government and officers. We support people whose health and lives are blighted by their wood burning neighbours, and empower them to have a voice, providing them with resources to hand out in their community to raise awareness of the issues, and by raising the public awareness of this toxic issue through media and amongst policymakers. Across London, Greater Manchester and Birmingham we provided insight into the high numbers of children’s hospital admissions with wheezing issues, which in all cases will be caused or at least exacerbated by air pollution. This kind of campaign raises awareness amongst the public and the policymakers on that issue and highlights how action is needed to clean up the air to improve health outcomes for everyone, but especially children.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our main stakeholders are our volunteers, the people who support our work and get involved for free. We are always in contact with them to ensure that our work streams are in alignment with their priorities and concerns. We meet monthly over Zoom, approximately quarterly in person and have numerous very active chats on messaging platforms. We have started doing anonymous volunteer surveys to gather as much feedback as possible on our internal engagement with our volunteers. We are pleased to say that the feedback was very possible, however, the main learning was that people would appreciate more training, which we are rolling out from May 2025. We are also constantly in contact with other organisations working in the sector, to ensure that our theory of change is effective and based in political reality and research.
