In this financial year Roouh CIC was established with the aim of supporting and empowering Palestinian women artisan businesses – particularly women living in refugee camps or under occupation – through the ethical sale of traditional handmade Palestinian embroidery products in the UK. The company’s initial capital was raised through a community-driven fundraising campaign, which laid the foundations for Roouh’s trading activities, allowing Roouh to set up and run a website and online shop. Funds were used to commission embroidery work to sell as Roouh products from Palestinian women artisans across twelve refugee camps in Lebanon, ensuring they received fair and direct remuneration for their craft from the outset. Roouh aims to operate on a break-even pricing model, where all proceeds from product sales contributed to fairly compensating the artisans who created Roouh products first and foremost. This approach ensured that any surplus generated directly benefits the Palestinian women refugees producing the goods, rather than being retained as profit, with some reserves left over to pay ongoing costs for the running of the company. Beyond trading, Roouh actively engaged with local communities across South East England by attending and speaking at social events, where stories of women artisans were shared and awareness was raised around Palestinian culture, their resilience in the face of oppression and exile, and the challenges faced by these women refugees trying to make a living in unstable conflict-affected regions. Through these combined efforts, Roouh has delivered on its social mission: supporting economic empowerment and self-determination for marginalised Palestinian women, preserving their cultural heritage, and promoting ethical trade.
