Year Ending: 31 October 2024

Company activities and impact

During the financial year, the Black Foster Carers Alliance (BFCA) continued its mission to improve outcomes for children in care from Black and Global Majority backgrounds. The organisation provided training, peer support, advocacy, and culturally competent resources for foster carers, social workers, and allied professionals. Key activities included: Delivering online and in-person workshops focused on anti-racist practice, culture competency, trauma-informed care, and identity development for children in care. Developing and launching the BFCA Academy – an e-learning platform designed to equip professionals with accessible, culturally inclusive training. Publishing and disseminating three editions of Voice of the Alliance – an online magazine highlighting the lived experiences of carers and children, sharing best practice, and amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities. Hosting community engagement events to recruit foster carers from underrepresented backgrounds. Supporting carers with 1:1 advice, reflective practice groups, and signposting to specialist services. These activities have directly benefited children in care by improving their sense of belonging and identity, supporting carers in delivering culturally appropriate care, and influencing local authority policies to better reflect the needs of Black children. The community impact includes greater awareness, increased foster carer retention, and strengthened local networks of care and support.

Consultation with stakeholders

CONSULTATION WITH STAKEHOLDERS: BFCA’s stakeholders include foster carers, care-experienced young people, social workers, fostering agencies, local authorities, education professionals, community groups, and advocacy organisations. The organisation has regularly consulted stakeholders through: Feedback forms and evaluation surveys following training sessions and events. Focus groups with foster carers and young people to shape the design of resources and support services. One-to-one discussions with local authority partners and fostering agency leads. An advisory group comprising experienced carers and sector professionals who meet quarterly. Informal community engagement via online forums and social media discussions. In response to feedback, BFCA has: Adapted training materials to include more lived experience perspectives. Introduced flexible formats (e.g. evening webinars, self-paced modules) to accommodate carers' schedules. Enhanced peer support offers by expanding reflective practice sessions and adding culturally specific content. Advocated for changes in local authority practice to reduce placement breakdowns and improve cultural matching.
