This year Relic’s activities have been somewhat subdued due to relocation to North Wales encouraged by personal circumstances. However, we have still been actively recycling plastic ‘waste’ into new valuable products, educating people about how plastic is recycled in addition to supporting other Precious Plastic workspaces. This year we have recycled approximately 600kg of which just over half has been made into sheet material used for willow-weaved basket bases by a local Lancaster maker, Lancaster City Council signage and notice board, decorative counter panels for Carringtons Coffee across a number of their new cafe’s, bird boxes for Grazers in Penrith, ocean plastic bar tops and stools made from discarded fishing ropes, awards for the EVAs and The Bay Film Festival (repeat orders) and student projects creating innovative hybrid materials for a designer table. The remaining plastic has predominantly been used for our injection moulding work including products for Hilton Grand Vacation in Carnforth using bottle caps from their site, coasters using fishing rope material for Wild & Sea and knife handles for Allday Goods using reject food tubs. Summer typically sees our busier time of year for events and workshops but this was when we were packing up Relic in order to move. We did have a very successful event at Carnforth High School educating 100-140 Year 9 students about plastic recycling and the circular economy. We also delivered a couple of workshops in partnership with WeSustainability in London and Brighton showing people how plastic is recycled in addition to creating clothing-specific education regarding microfibres, carbon cost and relative degradation times of different materials. Throughout the year we have supported other Precious Plastic workspaces such as Mull, Sustainable Design Studio, Revive Innovations, Zombie Plastics, SingularMARS, Ocean Plastic Pots, Neston High School, Sow the City, Are You MAD, Plastic Shed and BrothersMake supplying them with plastic material, equipment or technical advice. We have also helped other companies advising them of plastic recyclability, types and how they might set up a similar recycling workspace to deal with their own waste material.
Local Citizens Citizens have been consulted to raise awareness of Relic Plastic, its aims and the wider plastic issue. Connections with schools, community groups and organisations, as well as the plastic bottle top project has kept us in conversation with individuals looking to develop local knowledge and better recycling systems. Now that we have moved, we have started to investigate events to attend and connect to our new local citizens. Local businesses/organisations We have had recognition from the Lancaster City Council for our work with the collaboration on a new nature area with a notice board and signage provided by ourselves using recycled plastic. This has led to further conversations about providing sustainable signage and shaped thoughts on the services we could provide in the future. We also had the pleasure of working with Heysham Village Coastal Eco Garden who desired the murmuration artwork we created with Creative West End for their coastal garden. This has reinforced how valuable our community connections are and the story told by the plastic and artwork we can create. Due to relocation we are starting to build a new network of local businesses and organisations we will work with. Customers and Partnerships We are in regular conversation with B2B customers regarding the products and services we offer. We are constantly improving the quality and workflow of the products we make based on customer feedback. B2C sales have reduced due to a focus on B2B and relocation so we have had less consultation with individuals regarding this. We have also unfortunately left behind a number of partnerships due to relocation. International Precious Plastic community The wider Precious Plastic community is generally consulted informally through different channels such as social media, email and messages. The majority of consultation and actions surround the machinery we use and techniques, better enabling the ability to recycle plastic effectively across the globe.
