COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

BARNET ENVIRONMENT SUPPORT TEAM COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY

Company Number: 09577075 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 May 2025

Company activities and impact

We have engaged the community within Barnet and its surrounding through initiating community gardening projects with the volunteers. This year we secured funding from the national lottery and Groundwork for our project where we transformed disused green patches of land within allotments in Barnet into communal gardening spaces where guided gardening sessions were held and continue to be held with the help of our volunteers. The participants benefitted by engaging in sustainable outdoor planting activities which improved the environment and mental wellbeing of the volunteers. The planting and tending to the adopted spaces also increased awareness of the effects of climate change we are currently facing through increasing the bio-diversity within the green spaces we improved. Physical outdoor activities during the gardening sessions also connected different members of the community from different backgrounds that led to a sense of belonging. Majority of the volunteers who lack gardening spaces appreciated taking part as they were able to learn how to grow their own organic food and other benefitial plants which they took home to tend to in containers.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company's stakeholders are the volunteers who register to take part in our gardening sessions within the allotments and other adopted green spaces. We conducted gardening surveys using questionnaires, interviews and gathered general feedback and recommendations from our participants through our website , distributed questionnaires through marketing and held regular meetings to gather ideas on current and future projects that they would like to take place for their benefit and the environment. This helped us develop community projects that the dedicated volunteers feel like their efforts are actually making a difference in their community rather than relying on the council or government. Our surveys led to the establishment that a majority of residents are suffering from mental issues and using gardening as a form of therapy actually benefits them immensly. They suggested that more funding should be given to gardening projects such as ours on a long term basis so that we can involve more participants, including setting up regular gardening clubs for our children and youth to take up.
