COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

SPEAK WELL WITH WILLPOWER CIC

Company Number: 14498030 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 30 November 2024

Company activities and impact

The company runs community voice and public speaking workshops. It uses mainly Shakespearean texts to encourage clear speech articulation and to explore formal language, including principles of rhetoric. Some workshops have been given completely pro-bono (eg. For Breaking Barriers, a charity which helps refugees find meaningful employment – no payment for workshops has ever been received) and some workshops have been done for small payments which have helped cover workshop costs (eg. For The Longford Trust – a charitable trust which offers bursaries to prisoners and ex-prisoners for higher education studies). Breaking Barriers participants were mainly highly-educated but non-native English speakers. The workshops gave them greater familiarity with formal English. They improved their awareness of persuasive speaking (with an emphasis on job interviews and work presentations) and enhanced their English articulation. The same focus was put on work with the Longford Trust. The ex-prisoner participants were mainly British who were generally unfamiliar with formal English. None was familiar with the principles of rhetoric. All participants appreciated the work. The company has also done two workshops for commercial companies. Payments for these were put into the CIC. The payments helped fund admin costs and workshops for which no payment was received. The company has made several grant applications but none has yet been unsuccessful. The company will make further grant applications. It will also seek to find income from commercial companies. However, it will continue putting on voice and speaking workshops for under-privileged communities even if they are purely pro-bono – ie. without any payment. Matthew Collins has personally covered some company expenses. (Eg. Original creation of website; internet costs; printing of texts; etc)
