During this financial year we have continued to be the most accessible ceramics studio in Dalston. Ceramics studios typically only offer their members a monthly membership which is not financially accessible for much of the demographic of east London, especially during a cost of living crisis and in an area of high rents. We are the only studio to offer Drop-In sessions every day from 9am to 10pm. Drop-In plans last for 12 months and offer our members a cheaper alternative to paying a monthly membership. Since London life is very busy for most people living here, Drop-In plans are by far the most popular way for people to continue their ceramics practice at the studio by saving members money by not having to pay for a membership during periods when they cant make it to the studio; such as during busy work periods, family and social engagement, holidays, work trips and sickness. We have added another weekly “pay what you can” (PWYC) Clay social on a Saturday night which continues to draw in ceramics enthusiasts who are looking for a cheaper introduction to ceramics as well as a more healthy and wholesome activity for a Friday or Saturday night out in London. With prices between £15 - £30 we continue to be the most affordable ceramics studio in East London We launched a successful work exchange program in September 2023 which continues to be booked out by people eager to help with maintenance and cleaning at the studio in exchange for studio time working on their own projects, making them an affordable option for people who are struggling financially. In terms of social impact, we are finding that some work exchange attendees are also wanting to get to know people in the area, be of service or who have been burnt out from overworking and are looking for ways to feel useful and learn something creative, in contrast to their previous jobs. We are continuing to offer a 25% discount to Charities and CIC’s who book a group session. Group sessions are becoming an important area of the studio to focus on as they bring a net benefit to other local companies by improving social cohesion and overall well-being of their employees. Since renovating our premises into a ceramics studio whilst also maintaining use for yoga and meditation, we have been able to reach a very wide demographic of the Local community and beyond: We received £5K funding to give free sessions to 13-19 year old over August 2023: These sessions were extremely well received and gave kids a sense of purpose and engagement over the summer holidays and were great fun. Due to our reduced price sessions and in particular our “Pay what you can” Friday night social, we have been able to attract people who are struggling financially and using the appropriate kind of advertising on our website and instagram accounts we have reached people who would not have otherwise considered coming to pottery, yoga and meditation sessions. We have held several day retreats “Clay Days” for local charities and the NHS ;for both their members and carers themselves. Clay Days are a wonderful day retreat that encapsulates what Dalston Clay is about: Getting people into a flow state during creative pursuits and giving them the gift of time, relaxation and social connections. We have received 198 five star google reviews to date with people responding well to the relaxing and calm atmosphere at the studio: a quality that speaks for itself amongst the business of London life. Any income during this financial year has gone directly into improving the studio and our offerings to the community.
