Queer Kernow runs Cornwall’s Queer Collection, a conservation project with a particular emphasis on collecting objects and oral histories that represent the history of Cornwall’s LGBT community. People began donating personal effects and stories to Queer Kernow when the CIC was formed in 2020. We collated these donations into a formal collection in the financial year 2023-2024. The project’s activities have benefited the community in the following ways: -Older LGBT people in Cornwall, particularly those who are closeted from friends and/or family, have been able to donate private collections to us before entering care (such as personal letters), allowing them to preserve their privacy while safeguarding objects that would have been destroyed. -Younger LGBT people in Cornwall, particularly those from rural areas, have been able to contribute stories and objects to the collection (such as protest badges from local Pride Marches), allowing them to feel connected to the contemporary LGBT community here. -During Summer 2023, Queer Kernow ran a number of community outreach events at local prides and the county archive (Kresen Kernow). We engaged with an average of 100 people per event. At these events, we offered: -Free copies of ‘The Olden Gays’ (an educational zine made by Queer Kernow in collaboration with local LGBT artists) -An exhibition of historic protest badges -The opportunity to share what objects they would be interested in Queer Kernow exhibiting going forward, and how they would like to access the current collection (online, in person, etc). We gathered a total of 89 responses to our survey overall. -Over the course of the financial year 2023-2024, Queer Kernow gathered a total of 50 objects for the Queer Cornish Collection through a combination of in-person outreach and social media. Queer Kernow runs The Outback Project, a conservation project with a particular emphasis on digitising and restoring access to ‘Outback Newsletter for Lesbians in Cornwall and the South West’ - an LGBT newsletter that ran from 1997 until 2008. During the financial year 2023-2024, the Outback Project benefited the community in the following ways: As of 2025, all 140 issues of the Outback Newsletter are now available for public viewing on request at the county archive (Kresen Kernow). We were able to support a student placement from the University of Exeter who helped to digitially catalogue the contents of each individual Outback issue. Throughout 2024, Queer Kernow ran a series of outreach events centred on the Outback collection. Attendees were able to read original copies, learn about the content and context of the newsletter, and view/take part in an ongoing community art project (making zines based on Outback).
