Balance sheet statements

Company activities and impact

Future Words Prize administers the Future Worlds Prize for unpublished sci fi and fantasy writers of colour. It launched in 2020, and was registered as a CIC in 2022. During 2023-24, Future Worlds: -administered the prize, including fundraising, partnership management, marketing, shortlisting, judging, awarding the prize at a public event, and evaluation. -awarded £12,100 in prize money to a winner (£4,500), runner up (2,500) and six shortlisted writers (£850), plus arranged mentoring programme across eight publishing houses - supported previous winners to meet and secure agents - organised an 'intro to publishing' event to demystify the publishing industry for new writers, especially writers of colour and other marginalised groups -worked with national literature and sci fi festivals to platform new writing from marginalised writers.

Consultation with stakeholders

The Future Worlds Prize directors undertake the following consultation with stakeholders: -Quarterly meetings with private donors Ben Aaronovitch and Adjoa Andoh -contact with independent advisory group, comprising librarians, authors and agents -Annual updating of Memos of Understanding, plus ad hoc communication with publishing partners

Directors' remuneration

Company directors Sarah Shaffi and Andy Ryan both received payment totalling £15,340 across 2023-24 to administer the prize. There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director’s loss of office, which require to be disclosed.
