Company activities and impact

Community Interest Company Report Principal activities and Impact The principal activity of the not for profit company is that of educating, demonstrating and inspiring ways to regenerate our environment, health and community through mixed farming practices and educational support. We bring together people with SEND needs, long term unemployed, those with anxiety or other conditions that may make socialising hard in addition to schools, businesses and local residents. Together we encourage people to build trusted friendships, have opportunities to socialise, while promoting environmental stewardship and growing naturally grown food for the community. Workshops and Engagement Over the last year we have provided over 50 workshops on site at The Green Backyard with over 657 attendees, with a large percentage stating both short term and long-term increase in both physical and mental wellbeing. Our wider onsite and outreach engagement reached over 5000 people through a similar number of outreach workshops in schools, careers fairs and community events amongst other examples. Food Production and Distribution During the period of July 2023 to July 2024, we have grown and distributed over 2300kg of fresh, healthy food to the local community through our market garden shop and community partners, including over 800kg to local food banks, community cafes and fridges. This works towards addressing both food poverty and the access to healthy food options. Our market garden not only increases the availability of affordable, healthy food in the area, but also provides hands-on opportunities for local people to learn, volunteer, and participate in sustainable food systems. Carbon Emissions This produce was grown without the use of synthetic fertilisers or pesticides and with minimal packaging and distribution emissions, helping to reduce environmental impact while improving access to healthy, locally grown food. Carbon Footprint Estimate for 2,300 kg of Local Produce On average, food in the UK travels 1,500–2,500 miles before it reaches consumers. Transport, packaging, refrigeration, and processing all contribute to its carbon footprint. For context: The average carbon footprint of imported produce (including transport, cold storage, packaging) is roughly 1.5 to 2.5 kg CO2 per kg of food, depending on the product and distance. Locally grown, unpackaged, chemical-free produce can average as low as 0.2–0.5 kg CO2e per kg, especially when grown without synthetic fertilisers or industrial machinery. Estimated CO2 Savings If our 2,300 kg of produce replaced imported equivalents, we could estimate: Conventional/imported food emissions - est 2.0 kg CO2 e per kg (arrow) 2,300 kg times 2.0 is 4,600 kg CO2e Project Abundance (regenerative/local)- est 0.4 kg CO2e per kg (arrow) 2,300 kg times 0.4 = 920 kg CO2e Estimated carbon saving - est 3,680 kg CO2e That’s roughly equivalent to the emissions from driving a petrol car over 9,000 miles.
