Notes to the Financial Statements

for the Period Ended 30 September 2024

  • 1. Accounting policies

    Basis of measurement and preparation

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions of Section 1A (Small Entities) of Financial Reporting Standard 102

    Turnover policy

Turnover is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable, net of discounts and value added taxes. Turnover includes revenue earned from the sale of goods and from the rendering of services. Turnover from the sale of goods is recognised when the significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods have transferred to the buyer. Turnover from the rendering of services is recognised by reference to the stage of completion of the contract. The stage of completion of a contract is measured by comparing the costs incurred for work performed to date to the total estimated contract costs.

    Valuation information and policy

Creditors - Short term creditors are measured at transaction price (which is usually the invoice price). Loans and other financial liabilities are initially recognised at transaction price net of any transaction costs and subsequently measured at amortised cost determined using the effective interest method.

    Other accounting policies

Taxation - A current tax liability is recognised for the tax payable on the taxable profit of the current and past periods. A current tax asset is recognised in respect of a tax loss that can be carried back to recover tax paid in a previous period. Deferred tax is recognised in respect of all timing differences between the recognition of income and expenses in the financial statements and their inclusion in tax assessments. Unrelieved tax losses and other deferred tax assets are recognised only to the extent that it is probable that they will be recovered against the reversal of deferred tax liabilities or other future taxable profits. Deferred tax is measured using the tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the reporting date and that are expected to apply to the reversal of the timing difference, except for revalued land and investment property where the tax rate that applies to the sale of the asset is used. Current and deferred tax assets and liabilities are not discounted.

Company activities and impact

Grass Routes Movement CIC (GRM) was established in Autumn 2023 to create opportunities for mar-ginalised people to experience a sense of belonging, well-being and joy through movement and engag-ing with others in the outdoors. GRM works across Greater Manchester and has developed a strong track record of delivering high quality work with a range of partners. GRM has delivered diverse projects within our first 20 months which have made a difference to the lives of people from marginalised com-munities. Here are some highlights which demonstrate impact: - Enabling people who vulnerable migrants to boost well-being and address isola-tion through gentle physical activities and exploring the outdoors: Since November 2024, GRM has been delivering a 30-session programme of fun, energy-boosting wellbeing movement sessions with migrants being supported by an established charity, Rainbow Ha-ven. Rainbow Haven is a city wide Manchester service which, among other activities, sup-ports refugees, people seeking asylum and migrants struggling to navigate mainstream ser-vices. Participants are located across the city and our movement activities have included dancing, Tai Chi, therapy drumming, introduction to micro bushcraft activities, nature walks and active travel across the city. Over 50 people to date are engaged in the programme and those needing additional support are being signposted to specialist agencies. 3 participants are being trained to plan and support the project in order to gain experience, skills and confi-dence to lead activities. Participants have described how much fun they have at the sessions and enjoy connecting with each other. Many have described feelings of isolation and strug-gles with English to access support and how the project has created a safe space to practice English, connect with people and build confidence. This project is ongoing. - Empowering women to become Community Walking Champions: From November 2024 to the end of April 2025 GRM partnered GMOL to develop a team of women Communi-ty Walking Champions from ethnically diverse communities in Greater Manchester. We trained and supported them to develop skills, knowledge and confidence to lead their own walks and activities with less active community members. 27 women accessed a series of workshops and resources as part of the programme in readiness to act as role models and leaders, empowering other women to benefit from movement and the outdoors. 3 women have now gone onto to attend lowland training and two are now being mentored by GRM and GMOL as part of a national positive action pathway walk scheme administered by the National Trust and Mountain Training. - Supporting women living with cancer to try out and develop physical activities that improve their well-being: Since August 2024 GRM has been developing a movement project with and for 20 Asian, Arabic and Middle Eastern women who are directly impacted by cancer and to develop a bespoke programme of diverse movement and outdoor activities that supports their well-being. 20 women have shared the significant physical and mental im-pacts of cancer, explained how they were significantly less active than before their cancer diagnosis and enjoyed coming together to try Tai Chi, badminton, baseball, basketball, pool and active travel trips. A group of women in Oldham and Rochdale are now keen to start a support group to continue to re-engage with physical activity to boost their well-being and re-covery.

Consultation with stakeholders

Each of these projects has enabled GRM to build connections and to develop a collaborative approach with key delivery partners such as Rainbow Haven, Nacro Greater Manchester Outdoor Learning, the University of Manchester and diverse community groups and a broad range of local service providers who have established relationships with marginalised communities. By pooling our unique experience and skills with those of local service providers we work together creatively to maximise our impact. At GRM, we draw from the body of evidence of effective physical movement projects, from our work and life experience, and together with ongoing consultation with participants and partners we translate this learning into creative projects that fit the contexts of communities’ lives. This approach led to the creation of the projects described in Part 1. Working collaboratively with people from marginalised communities underpins our approach – ensuring that they are active in shaping and delivering projects so that everything we deliver is rooted in commu-nities’ needs, builds on their strengths and works towards maximising skills, experience. enjoyment, well-being and confidence. This participative approach ensures that GRM remains responsive in an on-going and proactive way. During and at the end of each project we capture feedback from participants, partners and collaborators and gather suggestions for how projects can develop to continue to meet needs. In May 2025, GRM was invited to speak at the Greater Manchester Moving Conference about our work.
