Principal activities of the company

The directors present their report and the unaudited financial statements for the year ended 30th september 2024 Principal Activities The principal activity of the company during the financial year was the continued advancement of cultural awareness, social inclusion, and community integration for Nigerians and the wider African diaspora residing in Northampton and surrounding areas. The company operates as a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) and provides the following core services: Cultural Education and Awareness: Organizing and hosting cultural events, exhibitions, and celebrations (including Nigerian Independence Day and participation in the Northampton Carnival) to promote pride in heritage and build community cohesion. Community Support and Advocacy: Offering advice and signposting services related to housing, immigration, employment, and education to support the social and economic wellbeing of community members. Youth Empowerment and Educational Outreach: Delivering youth engagement programs, mentorship initiatives, and workshops to support personal development, academic achievement, and positive cultural identity among young people. Health and Wellbeing Promotion: Partnering with local health organizations to raise awareness of physical and mental health challenges affecting minority communities, and encouraging access to early intervention services. The company operates for the benefit of the public and stakeholders and reinvests any surplus into community-led programs and service improvements. The directors confirm that the company has delivered on its community interest objectives and continues to be operated for the benefit of the community.

  • 1. Accounting policies

    Basis of measurement and preparation

    These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions of Section 1A (Small Entities) of Financial Reporting Standard 102

    Turnover policy

    Turnover represents the total income received by the company during the financial year from its ordinary activities, excluding VAT. Turnover is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable and is recognized in the profit and loss account as follows: Revenue from services is recognized when the service is delivered. Grants and donations are recognized as income when there is reasonable assurance that the company will comply with the conditions attached to them and that the grants or donations will be received. Event income and participation fees are recognized when the event takes place. Membership fees are recognized throughout membership. Other income is recognized on an accruals basis. All turnover is stated net of VAT and is derived from the principal activity of the company within the United Kingdom.

    Tangible fixed assets depreciation policy

    Tangible fixed assets are stated at cost less accumulated depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses. Depreciation is provided to write off the cost of each asset over its estimated useful life on a straight-line basis as follows: Office equipment: 3 to 5 years Furniture and fixtures: 4 to 6 years Computer equipment: 3 years The residual values and useful lives of tangible fixed assets are reviewed annually and adjusted if appropriate. Assets costing less than £250 (or another threshold your accountant may specify) may be written off in full in the year of purchase, subject to materiality.

    Other accounting policies

    1 Accruals and Prepayments Expenditure and income are accounted for on an accruals basis. Costs are matched with related income or charged to the profit and loss account in the period to which they relate. 2,Stock / Inventory (if applicable) Stock is valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Cost is determined using the first-in, first-out (FIFO) method. Net realisable value is based on estimated selling price less any further costs expected to be incurred to completion and sale. 3.Financial Instruments The company’s financial assets and liabilities (such as cash, receivables, and payables) are initially measured at fair value and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method, unless otherwise stated. 4.Grants and Deferred Income Grants received for specific projects or purposes are deferred and recognised in income over the periods in which the related costs are incurred. Unrestricted grants are recognised in the period they are receivable provided conditions for entitlement are met. 5. Going Concern The financial statements have been prepared on a going concern basis. The directors have assessed the company’s financial position and believe it will continue to operate for the foreseeable future.

Cultural Events and Celebrations: We hosted several events, including Nigerian Independence Day celebrations, community forums, and cultural exhibitions, which fostered a sense of belonging and pride among members. We took part of the Northampton carnival where we showcased our rich culture Community Support Services: We provided support and signposting services to individuals and families in areas such as housing, employment, education, and immigration advice. Youth and Education Initiatives: We ran youth engagement programs and educational workshops aimed at empowering young people with skills, mentorship, and cultural identity. Health and Wellbeing: We partnered with local health organizations to promote awareness of physical and mental health, encouraging early intervention and access to services.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company’s stakeholders are Nigerians resident in Northampton, The Nigerian Community in Northampton CIC actively engaged with its stakeholders throughout the financial year [insert year] to ensure its services remained relevant, inclusive, and impactful. Stakeholders consulted included community members, local partners, volunteers, faith leaders, and youth representatives. Methods of Consultation Included: Community meetings and open forums Online surveys and feedback forms One-on-one discussions with key community leaders Informal feedback at events and outreach sessions Key Feedback Themes and Actions Taken: Request for More Youth Engagement: In response, we expanded our youth programs to include mentorship sessions, cultural education, and creative workshops. Improved Communication: We started a new community page on WhatsApp and enhanced our social media presence to ensure better information flow. Support for Vulnerable Individuals: Based on feedback regarding increased needs during difficult times, we strengthened our referral network for mental health and encouraged sharing relevant information especially regarding housing services, and increased welfare support initiatives. Members asked for more cultural representation, leading to the development of more visible community events and partnerships with other local communities. These consultations have been vital in shaping our priorities and ensuring that our services continue to meet the evolving needs of Nigerians in Northampton. We remain committed to maintaining an open, responsive dialogue with all our stakeholders.
