Notes to the Financial Statements

for the Period Ended 28 September 2024

  • 1. Accounting policies

    Basis of measurement and preparation

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions of Section 1A (Small Entities) of Financial Reporting Standard 102

    Tangible fixed assets depreciation policy

All fixed assets are initially recorded at cost. Property, plant and equipment is used in the company's principal activity for the production and supply of goods or for administrative purposes and is stated in the balance sheet under the historic cost model. This model requires the assets to be stated at cost less amounts in respect of depreciation and less any accumulated impairment losses. Depreciation is calculated so as to write off the cost of an asset, less its estimated residual value (which is the expected amount that would currently be obtained from disposal of an asset, after deducting the estimated costs of disposal, if the asset were already of the age and in the condition expected at the end of its useful life), over the useful economic life of the respective asset as follows: Plant and machinery - straight line - 4 years

    Other accounting policies

Statutory information: The company is a private company limited by guarantee and registered in England and Wales. The company's registered number and registered office address can be found on the Company Information page. Statement of compliance: The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Companies Act 2006 and FRS 102 The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland including Section 1A Small Entities. Revenue from sale of goods: Revenue from the sale of goods is recognised when the company has transferred to the buyer the significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods, usually when goods are delivered and legal title has passed. Providing the amount of revenue can be measured reliably, it is probable that the economic benefits associated with the transaction will flow to the company and the costs incurred or to be incurred in respect of the transition can be measured reliably. Foreign currency translation: Transactions in foreign currencies are initially recognised at the rate of exchange ruling at the date of the transaction. At the end of each reporting period foreign currency monetary items are translated at the closing rate of exchange. Non monetary items that are measured at historical cost are translated at the rate ruling at the date of the transaction. All differences are charged to profit or loss.

COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

MAZE STUDIOS CIC

Company Number: 07314722 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 28 September 2024

Company activities and impact

This year has seen the set up of our kiln firing facilities in Nissen hut no3, with the installation of kilns, creation of a new website offering kiln firing services to the general public, local artists, organisations and the Bristol community. Although no longer providing studio spaces, the identified provision of a kiln firing service continues to fulfil a resource needed by local artists and makers. We created an online booking system to increase accessibility to our facilities and provide flexible arrangements, working with artists to achieve their projects. Artists have expressed their appreciation of the provision of our kiln firing service enabling them to complete their work on a time scale that is suitable to them. This has been expressed by parents and the public with commitments or work that would otherwise be preventative to accessing or fully utilising a studio. The kiln firing service allows for an alternative option of affordability for artists unable to finance a personal studio space. OVERALL STATUS & SPACES Mission statement ‘We are a community interest company for aiding the facilitation of artist development as a stepping stone between formal training and personal artistic progression towards artist independence’. Our aim Maze Studios CIC is established to cultivate and promote the progression of publicly accessible facilities and access to education in contemporary visual art, craft and design through the development of artistic knowledge and public participation. Maze Studios provides affordable access to creative facilities for Bristol based emerging local artists, with a focus on ceramics. Maze Studios promotes a professional and well-equipped studio with kiln facilities that can be accessed by beginners to University graduates and local artists. With the use of No.3 Nissen Hut Barton Hill trading Estate, our aim is to continue providing affordable options for artists firing ceramic works. EQUIPMENT We provide access to specialised equipment which artists setting up on their own may find financially challenging as well as difficult to accommodate. We currently have focused our range of ceramic -specific equipment to include a variety of kilns. The equipment at Maze Studios enables a wide range of creative activity. OUR CONTRIBUTION TO COMMUNITY We contribute to the Bristol arts community by collaborating with other Bristol-based arts organisations by participating in artist projects and arts trails, local artisan markets and community arts projects; we offer to fire art work brought to us from workshops facilitating schools, festivals and community groups. Maze Studios has made strong links with the community of artists, networking with local businesses and art studios. We have collaborated with local Arts Communities in Bristol for artist/maker events, art exhibitions, Arts Trails and market stalls. Helping to bring arts into the community, making services affordable and accessible for all. Maze Studios prioritizes local businesses and charities for material supplies and building equipment along with maintenance work. We also hire local electricians, to carry out necessary electrical safety tests and maintenance. Ceramic equipment is maintained and repaired by local Kiln technicians. Looking forward We have experienced the following socioeconomic difficulties: - We have modified and continue to modify our services to create a business structure to combat difficulties experienced by artists due to the cost of living crisis. - We strive to provide accessible and affordable options to artists. - A drive to further establish facilities that are sought after and valued by the arts community. We will continue to operate a smaller version of Maze Studios via the Nissen hut with a revision of services we offer, centred primarily around our kiln firings a service which has always been at the heart of Maze Studios.
